The interrogator-chaplain, Belial, Deathwing termies and Ravenwing vehicles are what made me choose DA as my first army. Absolutely spot-on for what I want from space marines
Weapon options aside, you've got really great customization all around not just for your command squad, but regular tactical marines, scouts, ravenwing and deathwing.
Agreed... the issue Is 90% of the DA characters/ units are still Marine level scale. I’ve got all the librarians, interrogator chaplain plus a couple converted characters... 1 or 2 tactical units, standard vets.. with some dreadnaught support. The additional squad of super sized marines just doesn’t look right to me :(
2nd edition. Both Ezekiel and Asrael is from 2nd, so early 90's. :) Asmodai is the only of the 2nd edition characters to get a new model (The standard bearer got a slight update with the sculpted banner, but he isn't a character anymore. Poor Bethor...)
@@FoWPenguin I vaguely remember I saw 2nd ed art with Ezekiel as centerpiece, but I didn't want to overshoot. :) Yeah, these guys are positively ancient, whereas Belial is from around early 2010s, but IMHO aged even worse (scale excepted).
All of my DA characters are still the original metal ones from 2nd Ed. As I find Finecast to be, let’s say inconsistent, I have never replaced any of them. Wish the paper banners had held up though, only one I have now is the Dreadnought.
What will you use as a stand? To me the plastic one is just not that sturdy. Have you had any problems?. My Sammael tends to go on a side and doesn't stay centered
Alfonso Carreon I have gone through 3 stands in the last 10 years for him-That is the amount of time he’s been under coated and not painted. I’ve drilled out the bass so he sits a little lower but is far more sturdy. Missed some mould lines as well. But it’s far too late now haha
I had the same Azrael in metal from 2nd Ed! And its def the same sculpt. Id be looking at bashing the old belthazar winged helmet for a lazarus/Azrael conversion... Shouldnt be too hard to clip the wings and fit them to a primaris helm
I also have the metal Azrael from 20 years ago. Sword has broken like 15 years ago, though. Fun thing, though, they are still selling the metal one. I looked the other day on the website, thinking it would be resin and kinda wanting to buy one, but it is still in metal. So it is the same as we bought 20 some years ago.
Always love seeing these range reviews. It’s so interesting to me to see all these models and hear and see them in a bit more detail. I’d love to see a Guard range review. Throw some love to the common Guardsman!
Wow. I'm a huge painter (not much of a gamer- yet) and looking at Azrael I can totally see what you mean. The lines on the dark portion of his robe, the definition on the sword in the middle of his chest, the choice of tint of red on his gun, and the lack of definition there... It really shows how the approach to painting has evolved. Nobody at Eavy Metal would paint the wings on his helmet that tone of red today. Just wouldn't happen.
Samual on Jetbike was designed by Jes Goodwin in 2005, and was cast in metal. the images on the website are of the metal model, thats why its so crisp.
Master Lazarus was actually the first model i attempted to "convert" with since I really wanted him to wear his winged helmet. Was rough but proud of it none the less.
The best ever "terminators" are the Dark Angels Legion Inner Circle Knights Cenobium. They're 30k/Forge World, but I think they'll be my first ever FW purchase.
To me, the Dark Angels seem like they'd be amongst the chapters that'd really benefit from the bigger "canvas" of being Primaris-ified - whilst also being a chapter that, with regards to the lore, is amongst the least compatible with being Primaris-ified
What I’ve never understood is why the Dark Angels never got more chapter specific units and weapons like the Space Wolves and the Blood Angels. Those two chapters, for example, have a very specific tactical squad and even dreadnoughts and lets not forget all the chapter specific weapons they got.
Only just noticed that the deathwing terminators have wonky shoulders, I think it must just be the picture on the store because I never noticed that when assembling mine
The Dark Angel range has a variety of models that still draw me when I see them. I'm still assembling and painting the Dark Angels side of the models from Dark Vengeance. I immediately assembled and painted the Death Wing Terminators. It would be great if the Chaplain was among the Made to Order models from Christmas 2019.
Never got to comment first! I love these range reviews but they are dangerous...starting an as mech army and thinking about some light conversions. By the way I’m Jem Duducu on Twitter.
I still remember picking Dark Angels as my army like it was yesterday. The new plastic Space Marine bikes had just launched, and I thought they were the coolest things I had ever seen. I had just started collecting a Ultramarines army(standard bearer, assault marines, and a Vindicare). I was picking up two boxes of bikes when the guy behind the counter said: “Well, if you like the bikes, did you know there are two chapters that run dedicated bike units? Entire companies of bikes!” As this was all anyone really knew about White Scars at the time, I bought the Angels of Death Codex and never looked back. I do still miss when the lore was ambiguous though. “Can’t be a traitor if you were never loyal!”
DA, BA, and SW suffer the most because of the Primaris relaunch, I wanted to come back to DA but there is no real cohesion between the models to me. Some are really old, some are finecast, etc. The three iconic charatcers are Azazel, Ezekiel and Asmodai but the sculpts are ancient. It's the same for BA and really puts me off collecting.
"He's looking pretty decent for his age" he says about Asmodai, one of the newest character models before Primaris. Azrael is really small compared to later work. Also, the Lion Helm contains a force field generator that makes a large bubble. Not sure if it actually can be worn.
The Asmodai and Belial models are still fairly new. Only having been released in the last edition or 2. Where I still have that same Samiel, Ezekiel and Azreal modesl in metal, same for the Company Master.
Maybe its just me, but Dark Angel terminators in general look less stout than your average everyday terminators. Their shoulders dont look like they are attached to the sides of their heads like with some other sculpts.
I have the OG asmodai....in the metal. That and the Ezekiel model are still among my favourites. I've taken that DA sword and converted Voldus into a Belial model. Also converting the Deathwatch commander into an Azrael figure. My DAs are all black...because green was the colour of Luther's traitors. I don't get why GW has them the other way round ( yes I know black was hard to photograph in the 80s and 90s) but lore wise, this needs sorting out.
What I like about the older models is the older style. They look dated when compared to today's models but there's a certain charm to older models that give them a classic look to me. I think the focus of new models now is a lot of detail and more realistic proportions, which I love, but older models seemed to ave a more cartoony feel to me which is nostalgic to see
Re: Azmodai, I couldn't think of any name for the things on the backpack, too, while you were mentioning it. Best I could come up with was "chimneys" lol
My biggest complaint about Sammael is that the little decorative white angel wings on his bike's little wings are backwards. The part that would connect them to the body if they were actually real wings is pointing away from the body. And it's pissing me off.
The Asmodai is a newer sculpt than the Azrael or Ezkiel they're both from back in 96 when his original one came out, think the banner bearer is an alteration on a mini that was out with the company master/captain from early days of 2nd ed chainsword arm and molded banner being the newer parts.
Been itching to make a trio of a custom Ravenwing Grandmaster and 2 Talonmasters ever since I saw a killer conversion of Vertus Praetor Jetbikes. I want to have 54 heavy bolter/assault cannon shots spittin death at the enemy before we close to charge range.
I have had the metal Azrael since 2nd edition. He might be smaller than current stuff, but apart from that, he's stood the test of time very well, and still looks amazing.
I'm currently in the process of painting my 2000 points of deathwing/inner circle. I'm using the IC model for Asmodai, I've got Ezekiel, but might just use the dark vengeance psyker since he's kitted the same and it's better model. I've got Belial and I don't get on well with the resin, but hopefully I can make the paintjob work. Otherwise I've got 3 deathwing terminator squads, 3 deathwing knights, deathwing ancient, deathwing champion, deathwing apothecary. Made from dark vengeance kit, deathwing kit, close combat terminator marines and the regular terminator marine box as well as parts from dark angels command squad.
First question on the Dark Angel application form..."Do you like A) Robes B) Skulls, C) Anything With Enormous Wings Stuck To It, D) All Of The Above."
The Deathwing Terminator Knights are just glorious. The only Terminators that I love more than the Deathwing are their predecessors, the Companion Deathwing Terminators in Cataphracti armor from the 30k set. Oh how I wish I could run them in 40k.
The jetbike Sammael is so much better than the older landspeeder Sammael. It's basically just the current speeder model with a book on the front and a pilot with sword. One day I'll buy jetbike sammael, but a bit put off by the fact it's finecast.
Hm I don't know, those separat wings on Lazarus do look like you should be able to attack them to just any helmet, no...? I've never seen that model in the flesh though.
▶18:25 = I think it's pretty obvious why the New (Primarus+) Kits don't have _all these *Back Banners,* (the delineation & natural progression away from 1st born marines' designs notwithstanding)
The banner bearer was a full remould based on brother Bethor as with Asmodai and came out around 6 ed where as Belial and Sammael and the two company masters were our last characters brought out in metal in 4/5 ed before we all went finecast. The company master with the sword was also an up date of a model from 1st and 2nd editions The darkshroud shines are part force field part warp stuff that leaves anyone near them feeling disturbed and for ever unsettled. I think the word your looking for is braziers for the parts on the power packs. Interesting story, the original model for Asmodai was in fact ment to the high interrogator and grand master of chaplains Sapphon but a mix up with lore and art work ment it became Asmodai, his newer model is a more true representation of him.
My problem with Azrael is he’s got this robed angel on the banner, then there’s a little one on top of the banner, and then it appears again on the breastplate. They just repeated the same motif in a vertical column one too many times for me.
If not for the faction itself, these older kits are a goldmine of additional stuff to use, the maces on the knights and their robes look gave me an idea to make Word-Bearers out of them perhaps, like say the annointed terminator bodyguard of Lorgar.
I love the dark angels asthetic. Awesome future grimdark tech knights. So cool. If only I didn't hate their personality, they may be one of my fav chapters.
I could be wrong but I think the reason they don't wear the winged helm, Azrael at least, is because it was The Lion's. I would think he would look like Dark Helmet from Space Balls. That being said I bought the wargames exclusive version of the lion and use him as Azrael.
The biggest problem with the range is that GW don't seem to know how to paint them. The ravenwing stuff looks great, but the rest of it? Yuck. That anyone one would look at the deathwing terminators and think "Ya, that's how I want mine to look" just seems impossible to me.
The banners on models... Really bugs me, yeh sure it looks cool. But, it makes the leaders stick out like a sour bad apple, and nothing would stop any enemy in any battle to just call in artillery right ontop of the bastards position.
I'd love some new robed Primaris for my dark angels and a new Azrael model. if they don't come out with one relatively soon I may just convert one to use since I don't want to use the old one :)
sammael is so old he was origionally diecast, in fact if you buy an azreal or an ezekiel youll get them in diecast. the banner bearer and generic company master are also diecasts redone as finecast, the company master came out in 2006 with an alternate model that is now gone from this world. the banner bearer is even older hes like 4th editon, in 6th with the finecast migrating they replaced his arm from a bare stick to an actual standard flag
i own most of these models and i thought id mention. many of the ones you called resin either are metal or used the metal pose/cast so they are probably older then you think. edit: i use my darkshroud almost any game i take ravenwing ( so almost all the time)
The best Legion and Chapter. Ann's with Asmodai, you are not allowed to have complaints. Seriously, Asmodai will smite and that is so terrifying even the Emperor wants him to calm down.
Serious question ive not found the answer to anywhere for the several years ive asked, .... Why did the DA change color from black to green? & one thing I like about the DA is they have so many colors to them - black, green, red, white, bone, purplish,.... makes them very much their own thing, pretty neat.
All termies suffer from not being big enough to fit a big burly marine in them but with Belial it seems worse. The armor is just not chunky enough and combined with his narrow stance makes him look like only the fraillest of inquisitors would fit in the suit.
Dark Angels were my first ever army and were mostly metal. Didn't the standard bearer have a name? Brother something. My asmodai didn't have the incense burners on his back pack either.
Anyone have any info on the Helm Bearer? I remember that it is ment to be a mysterious character who no one really knows about? Servitor? Something important? Or just 'because it looks cool'?
Samael is much older than you think, he predates finecast entirely, mines metal :) Azreal is though muuuuch older than the rest (in fact hes the oldest model in the DA range (and one of if not THE oldest in the Marine range in general (at time of makling this comment of course.. were getting a shiny new one finally!)
Ah yes the 6th edition first releases. Those chosen chaos marines were the shit. Dark angels were great too with their Mace knight terminators (forget the name and too lazy to look it up).

The robes sold me! Not a single marine of mine doesn't have a robe on 😂 even if its more a stern guard tabard
same here, dark angels where my first army too(my only army 'cause i just started) i picked them for that knightly estetict they have
I have just started in 40k and DA are my first army.. love how there are so many characters too, even though my wallet isnt talking to me anymore..
I am a Dark Angels player and I love the look of the veterans mainly because you can have so many different weapon options for them
Weapon options aside, you've got really great customization all around not just for your command squad, but regular tactical marines, scouts, ravenwing and deathwing.
I absolutely love these guys, they just scream grim darkness of the far future and they are space techno knights who wouldn't want that?
Oh man, a primaris dark angels vet squad would just be the best models, and not just for dark angels players. Imagine the kitbash potential!
Agreed... the issue Is 90% of the DA characters/ units are still Marine level scale. I’ve got all the librarians, interrogator chaplain plus a couple converted characters...
1 or 2 tactical units, standard vets.. with some dreadnaught support.

Like with all Primaris baring most of the Plotcon Primaris characters GW would somehow stuff it up.
Asmodai, he has suspicious knowledge about our chapter. Make him REPENT!!
DID SOMEONE JUST SAY MURDER *ANYONE* VIOLENTLY?!
I love that Sammael's jetbike is just a tiny (or huge, depending on how you measure it) Battlefleet Gothic ship.
12:00 WHEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED!
Sammael on jetbike dates back to metal era, and I mean 4th edition, but Ezekiel takes the cake, I think he dates back to 3rd. :)
Azrael and Ezekiel are 2nd edition models.
Edit: The banner bearer is just a re sculpt of Brother Bethor, also a 2nd ed model

i own most of these models and i thought id mention. many of the ones you called resin either are metal or used the metal pose/cast so they are probably older then you think.
edit: i use my darkshroud almost any game i take ravenwing ( so almost all the time)
The best Legion and Chapter.
Ann's with Asmodai, you are not allowed to have complaints. Seriously, Asmodai will smite and that is so terrifying even the Emperor wants him to calm down.
that azrael model is like 3rd edition, he really needs an update
Serious question ive not found the answer to anywhere for the several years ive asked, .... Why did the DA change color from black to green? & one thing I like about the DA is they have so many colors to them - black, green, red, white, bone, purplish,.... makes them very much their own thing, pretty neat.
I'm not totally sure, but quite certain in lore they changed their color in order to distinguish themselves from the fallen
These guys were and still are my first and only 40k army, couldn't have picked a cooler Space Marine Chapter.
All termies suffer from not being big enough to fit a big burly marine in them but with Belial it seems worse. The armor is just not chunky enough and combined with his narrow stance makes him look like only the fraillest of inquisitors would fit in the suit.
I like my Dark Angels. The only one that I don't like are some of the robes (I like that Lazarus style), and the feathered helmets.
The weird thing about Ezekiel is that he got a new model in the Dark Vengeance Box Set, but it wasn’t used again later on.
It wasn't Ezekiel, it was Turmiel.
Dark Angels were my first ever army and were mostly metal. Didn't the standard bearer have a name? Brother something. My asmodai didn't have the incense burners on his back pack either.
ASMODAI! HE HAS A SUSPICIOUS VIDEO!
Omg Belial! I know him from Spacehulk Deathwing! YAY! :D
Anyone have any info on the Helm Bearer? I remember that it is ment to be a mysterious character who no one really knows about? Servitor? Something important? Or just 'because it looks cool'?
It's a watcher in the dark, a type of psychic xenos race from Caliban.
Another Chaos army review? Ebic.
I can confirm that uber-flail of deathwing knight does not work at all. That's why there's always a Watcher carrying a sword for a substitute.
The original Sammael was pewter. I remember putting it together, and it was heavy enough to break the stand!
Ah yess the quintessentially dark angel sword or bellend blades as I like to call them
You've faced the worst, Now you face the first!!
I want to start a space marine army but I'm between dark angels or black templars, you make the desicion making process easier
