Devdas (the novel) was published on 30 June 1917 (103 years old) and from that time it has been adapted into Bollywood and TV shows so many times, the cultural nuances that many of us and Jaby-Achara didn't get is understandable as it dates back the era of British rule where they drove the wedge of classism and Elitism in the India societal fabric.
The reason Dev didn't fight back was that it was never an option at that time. They wouldn't have survived after eloping, nobody would have let them live.
This masterpiece by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee was a mirror to the Indian society in the 19th century amalgamated with true love inspired by Radha and Krishna (who also never united)

    • @hfutuggigi5403
      @hfutuggigi5403 Год назад +7

Everything you said is correct. But the novel isn't inspired from Radha Krishna, it's actually inspired from Sarat Chandra's own life. Sarat was working as a private teacher in Kolkata, and he fall in love with the daughter of a landlord/attorney (i don't remember). Her name was Parvati (Paru). When they couldn't get married, Sarat got addicted to alcohol. And then he wrote DEVDAS. (You can refer to the biography on Sarat Chandra's life. I don't know if there is a english version of the biography?).
PS: Eventually Sarat Chandra's addiction to alcohol indirectly killed one man in Mayanmar.
Anyway, love to read your comment :)
Edit : btw , Sarat Chandra though a Brahmin, stood for atheism. Hated the vey idea of religion. So it is the least thing he would do , that a novel inspired from popular religious culture.

There's an irony behind Devdas not taking Paro with him. His anger at his father when he insulted Paro blinded him so much that he forgot his love for a moment and left without her. Later, when he cooled down, he realized that if he tried to marry Paro he would be disowned, which would end up maligning and ostracizing Paro's family too, since Devdas' family was almost equivalent to royalty in that district, no one would want to cross his father. So it would mean he would drag her and her family down with him. Hence, he thought it better to destroy only himself as a penance for being too weak to fight for his love.
Also, Families of "old money" and prestige in those days would rather have their sons spend time drinking and whoring even while married, than fall in love with a woman of lower status. As Achara said, there's a difference between a prostitute and a courtesan. Those high class courtesans were treated no less than royalty and paraded around as a status symbol for the Lords of rich families. Courtesans also played an important role during wars, helping kings and emperors to carry out covert missions (a la Mata Hari). They were highly valued and respected.

The song that looked "oddly erotic" was actually meant to be erotic. I've read an article that said that some of the positions that both of them showed in the song are from Kamasutra. The whole song is about the divine intimacy between Bhagwan Krishna and Radha Maa so, the song is trying to draw parallels between the Radha-Krishna intimacy and Paro-Devdas intimacy. In modern words, you can call it a "dramatically censored intimate scene" 😂 but the symbolism is much more divine.

Dev giving up all of a sudden seems odd here because they changed the characterizations from the book (classic Bengali novel of the same name) a lot but kept the main plot points. Paru (that's what she's called in the novel BTW, not Paro) had always been head over heels for Dev but to Dev she'd been more like an annoying kid sister he grew up with. After returning home he didn't even have time to grasp the changing relationship or understand his own feelings before all this drama unfolded and the families fought. Paru went to Dev's room at night to say she loved him and would even have been okay with the scandal of someone discovering them in the morning (I might be misremembering this part, but I'm mostly sure)- then they'd have to be married. Dev turned her down. (Nobody actually saw them together at night in the book). Afterwards he realized he actually did want Paru (unlike the movie where he comes in already super lovey-dovey) but as Paru'd felt humiliated earlier, she rejected him this time.

Devdas was made from the very popular bengali novel DEVDAS by the great Sharatchandra Chattopadhyaya. In this book devdas is an impulsive, egoistic man with a soft and emotional heart (a complex character), who always dominated by his father since childhood.
Also, it was written at the time of british rule, most of the landlords and kings of the states were worked under the British government. So some upper class Indian people like in this film wore suits, blazers and loose clothes like in this film, same as the britishers at that time, which was a sign of eliteness and aristocracy back then. These fashions were less seen after the Indian freedom movements and our people made and wore swadesi dresses (dresses made in our motherland) as a sign of protest to the British government.

Devdas is based on a Bengali novel. Three versions of it have already been made. The earlier one starring dilip kumar and vijyantimala in black and white is a classic. You shd see that. It is a tragedy.

Achara is way more intelligent... I find her very Indian, she understands every bit of our culture, emotions and feelings by only watching these things. She never disrespect, because she kinda feels it all. She's perfect among all... Just love her ❤️

Thankyou for reacting, in our bengali culture, a bride has to be totally well and perfect on her wedding day, otherwise it's a bad sign. Whn dev hit her and got her bloody, she became imperfect for the wedding, as well as the blood near her forehead acted as the Vermilion given by dev... in that way, they got married... 😊all complex symbolism

I just love watching movies with Achara... Dang... cant wait for the next part.. Also, this is a movie based on a book written in 1917.. Very different times.. Devdas is as a character has a lot of ego and if you notice he suffers from the Victim syndrome and I would go as far as to say that he enjoys it.. family name and pride were important to people during that time..

The epic novel "Devdas" was written by bengali famous writer Sarat Chandra Chattapadhay. So, the outlooks, foods, languages used here as smiliar with bengali family. Though they used hindi but also used bengali words.. Like "Sandesh".. It is a bengali sweet..
    And i'm a bengali too.

Devdas is a novel which is an pic love story in archaic bengali literature. A story of not so brave Romeo and his childhood love Paro. The story is a complex characterization of each character and impeccable storytelling. The society structure, the egoistic patriarchy and young men and women struggling to fight off and often succumbing to the older generations. The novel is an epic love story written by Saratchandra Chattopadhyay. Although the movie depicts it in few bits and pieces and the sets are amazing, the novel will take you in a different era and break your heart like never before. I had to learn the language even though I speak perfect bengali. When I finally read the novel I was dazed for months. Like so many of his works it's etched into your heart.

The answer to your question "why devdas didnt take paro with him?" is because he is a selfish and a fickle minded person who was always confused whether he really loved paro or she is just a childhood friend. When paro came to visit him in the middle of the night to confess her love he didnt even bother to explain his feelings except telling her why did she come here so late at night. people will talk bad about her if they heard. He is an a**hole and a complete douchebag. This attitude of his ruins him completely and makes him unable to love another. even if he did love someone he never stood for his love. He is stuck between two women and the choice is so difficult that he tries to run away just because he cannot defy the society norms. He never truly loved both of these women who deeply loved him except giving them endless pain. He neither deserves paro nor chandramukhi.

This whole story is taken from a very famous Bengali novel..... It's kinda known to us that the writer who wrote this novel actually wrote this thing in influence of alcohol..... obviously, it has some inspiration from British India as it was written that time..... This is a movie that I loved to read every single day.... And every Bengali knows about this not because of this movie for the novel that writer wrote
