34:01 that blood actually symbolises sindoor. Sindoor is a red powder worn by married women in the middle of forehead near the hairline. And in wedding this Sindoor is put on by husband on wife’s forehead. That’s the ritual. So dev is indirectly saying you are my wife and I’m your husband. 34:54 like that’s the actual sindoor right there.

Chandramukhi (Madhuri's character) was not misdirected and she's not a villain, I think you guys assumed she would be based on her profession. She was meant to be a sympathetic character, and genuinely loved Devdas and took care of him for months. Due to her station she knew she would never be able to marry him or anything, and she knew he loved another regardless, so her love for him was selfless. Actually in their relationship, Devdas was the cruel one, constantly talking down to her while using her for pleasure. Devdas also was cruel to Paro, rejecting her based on the same class prejudices despite his love for her. This whole story is a commentary on class. Devdas' parents turn down Paro on the basis that her mother was an actress - a role which back then was seen as only marginally better than a courtesan. It was their prejudices that lost them their son. It's the same prejudice that Paro's son-in-law flaunted at the Durga pooja (the Dola re Dola performance) but, rightly, Chandramukhi exposed his hypocrisy and defended her right to dignity. Devdas is very theatrical and melodramatic, that's why I think SLB did it best to cast SRK as devdas because he is a proper theatre actor. Also, Dilip Kumar played devdas in his era in the 50s. And he wanted only srk to play the role, if ever being remade. These two did the best as devdas in the hindi film industry.
Honestly , Everyone in Devdas did an amazing job but for me Kirron Kher stole the show. I tell you why? Even though all the other actors ( leading or supporting ) did great , but they did what was anticipated from them . On the contrary, Kirron Kher was a big Revelation in the film . She had been acting for a while back then, but people started recognizing her as an actor after this movie. I still remember as a kid, I was highly disappointed when she didn't win any major awards in the " Best supporting actress category" for this film. Her performance is the true definition of how the supporting actor should drive a scene through their performance that the audience forget about the leading actors. She is such a power house. My dad is not a movie buff at all. But He watched Devdas when it played on TV. And he only appreciated Kirron Kher's performance. He loved the two scenes. One where she gets back at Dev's mom and sister in law after the insult and the second one when she blows the horn as Devdas starts burning everything in the haveli. Do watch " Khamosh Paani", another epic performance by her. Highly recommended!!
34:01 okay so, with the way Devdas spreads the blood across Paro's hair part is supposed to symbolise sindoor (red vermillion that grooms apply on the bride's hairpart during the wedding ceremony). The reason this was done by blood rather than sindoor, is to showcase and symbolise just how toxic and unhealthy their relationship was. It's literally taking a symbol of union and marring it with blood. Their union is literally marked with blood. The film is precisely stating that if Dev and Paro were to get married, Dev would only fill her hairline with blood (i.e. her life with pain and sorrow) due his destructive nature.
I miss this SRK so much now. He was a freak on screen. What a performance! We have lost that Srk amidst commercialism. Hope we'll see him again one day.

If you watched closely, in Bairi piya song, they jokingly perfected their future, that paro will be rich and get married to old man whereas Deva will not get married..
It was rumored that Madhuri Dixit was 4 months pregnant when she filmed this movie. Fun fact: her complete outfit for Kahe Chedd Chedd Mohe weighed 24kg.
No she was NOT pregnant. This “fact” has been debunked. Her fans just put the rumor out that she was pregnant since she looked very hefty and old compared to Aishwarya. But you need to just accept that Madhuri looks fat in a lot of her earlier movies too. She was never size 0 and still she is beautiful.
I watched this movie by accident on RUclips cuz it came on my fyp and honestly, Chandramukhi and Paro should've ended up together. Man Devdas was the entire problem.
Watch DevD it's the perfect time for it. A modern take on Devdas. With Abhay Deol and Kalki Koechlin the ones who played Kabir and Natasha in Zindagi na milegi dobara. A brilliant movie with amazing actors.
Great reaction! But - you have terribly misunderstood the character of Chandramukhi. She was never meant to be an evil character, but someone who allows Devdas to see that love manifests itself in different forms (I truly believe that Devdas did fall in love with Chandramukhi). In fact, hers is the "purest" kind of love for Devdas. She doesn't expect marriage or physical intimacy or anything really from him in return, she's just happy just knowing that she has found love through him (as opposed to having found a lover) - primarily also because she as a courtesan does not expect her love to be reciprocated by a nobleman. Notice that she dresses like "meera" towards the last act of the film. In rewatches today it may in fact seem unbelievable that she loves Devdas the way she does, given that he ill-treats and disrespects her for a better part of the film. In my opinion, Chandramukhi was the best and strongest character of the three. Also Efra - sorry but I think your love for Aishwarya has blindsided you (WHO I ABSOLUTELY LOVE) - BUT y'all didn't appreciate Madhuri enough 😭Madhuri is a queeeeeen aand her phenomenal dancing aside, she is a fine fine actor, and she displayed that in this film. I noticed in the reaction that you guys missed some of her best lines (especially during her confrontation with Paro). She slaaaaayed!

She was the queen of bollywood in the 90s and the highest paid actress earning the same or more than the male leads which wasn't common at that time. She's also the top no.1 dancer of the 90s and during the song Dola re Dola she was actually pregnant yet she moves flawlessy. A gem of the 90s

How you two not crying while Paro's wedding scenes? I was crying a lot and cramped. That scene is so vulnerable. Imagine you love someone but marrying someone else for the sake of family dignity. If that me, I definitely will run away at the last night. 🙁 And do you realise that Devdas is more even remember of Paro when he is with Chandramukhi? Because in almost every performance of hers, she says 'isssh...' this reminds him of Paro like in the first song when Devdas gave Paro a bracelet. This makes him more crazy sad and vulnerable.
@@FeatureFridayIndia You have to understand Indian culture to understand such movies. Chunni babu was a good person, he didn't know srk had health problem and madhuri is also a good woman who loved srk. She was not manipulating him.
Actually it's not overacting. It's done deliberately to give the actual theater feel to the audience. Sanjay leela bhansali specifically instructed his actors to act as if they are in a theater & the last person in the row should feel the emotion in your voice & acting. Hence you will see the over emphasis in their expression & voice modulation.

It's a pretty altered adaptation of the actual 1917 novel “Devdas” The Devdas guy is a mentally disturbed person in many ways . But they glorified him & his dids just to make a commercial film out of it .
Guys this is a theatrical movie, the scene where dev hits Paro its a symbolism, you guys are artist too so you should know that. Dont take everything so literrally because nobody is romanticizing it, its a metaphorical reference like many others in the film

It's a brilliant movie with a brilliant cast and direction, considered one of the best Bollywood movies made in the past few years.
I just noticed when he is talking the Chandramuki they translated "tawaif" as "whore" as if he insulted her by calling her a whore. Tawaif were well educated and generally respected courtesans, although perhaps the timing of the film may change that somewhat as they later fell out of favor due to their altering roles in society. She *is* a tawaif (in her response she says this, but they translate it as "courtesan" when she says it) so the difference in translation really changes the conversation. It seems to me more like he is saying "you can't be anything but a courtesan, so there is no point in you chasing me as if you can" whereas in his mind Paro is someone he can marry, Chandramuki is someone he can never truly be with.
I love how you guys are mesmerized by Ash's beauty. 😍😂 IMO there's no actress like her who can act like this. She is def director's actor. She delivers on some of the most bizzare director's briefing effortlessly. Her acting can make u think what they would h've told her to come up with that particular expression. She can sell any emotion with her expressions which she conjures up from thin air.

@@ujjwalakulshreshtha9665 wow why did they not have that in the film? It would have been so cool. But i guess they wanted us to see Dev's misery only after what he did in his ego and anger
When he hit her that was not abuse he deliberately hit her in middle of her forehead and then used the blood to fill the hair line partition. This is why it was being romanticised if you read the lyrics you will understand. This is how you het married in hinduism by putting red powder in bride’s forehead. So he married her before she got married to the other guy. If you notice all the married women wear redpowder thing on their forehead in indian movies.

Nailed it
And that scene in Veer-Zaara where she asks SRK to "return" her daughter back to her....!!!!!!
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's most underrated movie is Black in my opinion...absolutely terrific film and very very underrated...and its completely different from all the other Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movies
Makes sense why it didnt work out
19:05 She is another legendary singer Dr. Jaspinder Narula. She is actually a PhD in Indian Classical music.. You can also checkout her live performances and songs..

Hell no I never wanted her to end up with him. That guy’s a red flag.
@@GigiKaur-kg5nx on a second thought you're also right.. But it hurts to see how miserable they both became after their separation
It’s not rumored, it’s a fact
The alleged "fact" has been debunked!!
@@vijrever2770She is NOT ,,fat"💀
This is Shriya Goshals first movie as singer when she was just 16.
Not them hating on Chandramukhi for mere existing in Paro-Devdas life 🥲
she was nagging okay even i dont like her she was desparate and her character went up when she loved him truly
Efra used to now Kajol and SRK's pair like us now 😂😂
Great reaction!
That "you drink till death" scene..
Not one guy can in indian cinema can do that except srk
34:21 not romanticizing. Dev was violent. But the result is that the red on her forehead by him symbolizes her marriage to him at that point.
You can watch Dev D. which is a retelling of Devdas in modern times with a lot of changes. It's by one of the best directors of post 2000s
That bleeding part of forehead represent of "Sindoor"(which represent of marriage ) though it's heartbreaking abusive but forcefully he married Paru in Religious and spiritual way , that's why music is romantic with heartbreaking ❤❤
"Jawani" means youth not money 😂😂😅😅
its not bindi its sindoor
They will not understand that's why I replaced it with bindi.
Quick background on the other actress, Her name is Madhuri Dixit. She was the queen of bollywood in the 90s and the highest paid actress earning the same or more than the male leads which wasn't common at that time. She's also the top no.1 dancer of the 90s and during the song Dola re Dola she was actually pregnant yet she moves flawlessy. A gem of the 90s
I remember watching this movie when I was 12 a year after its realise I was crying so much SRK delivery is amazing this is my number one favorite movie of him his my number one indian actor
I don't no whenever I see this movie, always I cried a lot...
Srk is a brilliant actor..❤❤
True, he did 70% drunk acting and his died scene always too realistic that it feels I will be dying now 😅
How you two not crying while Paro's wedding scenes? I was crying a lot and cramped. That scene is so vulnerable. Imagine you love someone but marrying someone else for the sake of family dignity. If that me, I definitely will run away at the last night. 🙁
And do you realise that Devdas is more even remember of Paro when he is with Chandramukhi? Because in almost every performance of hers, she says 'isssh...' this reminds him of Paro like in the first song when Devdas gave Paro a bracelet. This makes him more crazy sad and vulnerable.
I don't know why I knew Devdas would be next😂😂
hahah read our minds!! HOW HAVE YOU DONE IT!!!?!?!?!

@abhisheksahu3435 Theoretically, they didn't mean it that way. If u listen to them carefully,
It's all about emotions!
Devdas is a antihero! stop romanticizing him, shah rukh khan himself said that devdas's death was his ultimate reality in the form of karma
So true ive never seen dev as a hero paro was the real heroin ik i might sound weird but paro leaving dev becoz he was scared and disrespectful
She is the Madhuri Dixit..no one can match to her dancing skills in bollywood till date
OH MY GOD! Tonight is set .
yayyyyy glad you're set

Devdas was Shreya Ghoshal's debut in Bollywood and she sang most of the songs in this movie. She marked her arrival and ascendancy to the top of singing with this movie. She was only 18 or 19 when she sang for this movie and all the songs were chartbusters during the time...
that was a crazy debut for shreya..
This kinda debut we didn't see again
Guys the editor of your videos is the best man🤣🤣🤣🤣🙏🙏🙏🙏
It's a pretty altered adaptation of the actual 1917 novel “Devdas”
The Devdas guy is a mentally disturbed person in many ways .
I just finished crying with you guys in the reaction to Aashiqui 2 and now I gotta grab another tissue box cause...well... 😢 Devdas 😢
Btw Sharatchandra' Chattopadhyay the writer of this novel,,he wrote this at the age of seventeen....he went to work from calcutta to Rangoon now meyenmar there he wrote this piece while drunk...that's why he didn’t want to published this book bt almost seven years later he decided to published it and rest is history...

Devdas is not just an word, it's an Emotion in India. The word is now synonymous to the Heartbroken Person.
maturity is when you realise Devdas was the toxic one, and not paro or chandramukhi

"Get the whip out", got me cackling each time. Efra has some kinks
Oh oh Next should be MY NAME IS KHAN pls, you will find another 'side' of SRK there ❤
I just noticed when he is talking the Chandramuki they translated "tawaif" as "whore" as if he insulted her by calling her a whore.
Please “HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM” next…….. Sanjay Leela bansali movie starring Salman khan and Aishwarya rai and Ajay Devgan
Efra " Jawaani" means "Youth" and "Paisa" means "Money"
Vishal Bharadwaj’s Shakespearean trilogy, Maqbool, Omkara and Haider. Masterful storytelling and tragic because Macbeth, Othello and Hamlet and pretty tragic and dark.
There's a theory that says in the aftermath of story, Paro also died. She did not survive the collapse with those huge iron gates

Paro was in love with someone who was manipulative, who would beat her. Then they broke up (kinda) so she needed to have power on her side meanwhile he still tried to play with her emotions and life. So for more power she married a rich, powerful, influential family. Much like THE BACHCHANS
@@ujjwalakulshreshtha9665 wow why did they not have that in the film? It would have been so cool. But i guess they wanted us to see Dev's misery only after what he did in his ego and anger
@@ujjwalakulshreshtha9665 "...broke up kinda..." Queen 👑 Aishwarya Rai Bachchan DUMPED that alcoholic abusive criminal bully!!!
If you want to watch something modern in Bollywood, I suggest watch Rocky aur Rani ki prem kahaani. It is a very very nice and enjoyable movie. It also talks about alot of themes that need to be talked about.
This always be my favorite of SLB works. The music and casting was perfect. His later works are more opulent but there is something special about this.
Amazing review. I think if you want to see a newer film you should watch Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. It stars SRK, Rani Mukherji, Priety Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan and Kirron Kher (the actress who played Aishwaryas mum in Devdas). So far you've only seen SRK as the lovable hero. In Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna his character isn't very likeable so you'll get to see another side of his acting
