Love how you tackle a wide variety of content with such depth. Also hard agree on speedrun strats being interesting and clever (at times) yet the actual practice being monotonous and too random to feel good (depending on the game).
Great video! I wish I had seen it sooner. What drew me to this specific category, aside from my love for the game, was the puzzle aspect of figuring out how to get from point A to point B as fast as possible. In the first section of the game, just getting to the slimes was fairly straight forward, and I only had to stop a handful of times to get there quickly. The fights themselves were incredibly hard to figure out. Because of this, I don't think this speedrun would be possible without save states. It would take far too long to figure out what the next best step would be. I'd say I spent 90% of my time routing the game, and 10% of my time trying to do said route, memorizing each section little by little as I went until I could finish the game (while glancing at notes during some short down times!). Overall its a very fun run for those with a love for puzzle solving and a general love for the game itself.
Wow, I'm really honored you saw and enjoyed the video! I appreciate your insight about the run, it is still one of the most interesting playthroughs I've seen. With most RPG speedruns, I don't usually go crazy for games which rely on bugs and exploits, even if they are fun to watch. But in the case of DQ1, I find the pure manipulation stuff very fascinating. I even tried to follow along with guides for this, thinking maybe I give running this game a try sometime, but I'm not sure I have the necessary patience lol.
This speedrun is my go-to for telling people about how interesting speedruns can be, and this video was a great and worthy exploration of it. Well done!
Seer you magnificent bastard, I'm looking forward to your take (Good no doubt) about FFII. I've always lamented how bad a rap it has always gotten with some good cause but it's overall charm and the headway it made for the series was glorious. Kudos on making me post after god knows how many years since my last one.
AHH FF2 can't wait to talk about it sometime. I'm strangely fond of the game, but that's mostly because I love breaking shit lol. And I'm greatly appreciative that you'd comment on my content! I truly value that. I myself have commented maybe 15 times on things ever so I'm always humbled when people bother to leave a response!
As someone born too late to play a nes or snes I’m loving the virtual console on Nintendo switch. Just got into Earthbound Beginnings and it’s an incredible diamond in the rough that I had never heard of before
I know I'm nearly 2 years behind, but just as a fun fact, In the Khoekhoe language (Khoekhoegowab), "!" is used as a consonant to refer to the alveolar click sound (the click sound you make with your tongue/mouth) common in their language. Khoekhoegowab is native to Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, though the ! sound is also present in other African languages. You might find it in some peoples' name too, such as Namibian Rugby player, Prince !Gaoseb.
Not all of us do. The route I used in my speedrun was done through simple trial and error. I find the puzzle aspect of figuring out the fastest way to do something to be very fun.
As always, the video was very entertaining. I would love to see you make one about Hollow Knight. That has quickly become a favorite of mine. Hearing your description of the Path of Pain would be quite fun. Nice job. Keep up the videos.
Thank you very much! I'd love to make a video covering Hollow Knight, such a uniquely designed game. Was Path of Pain the endurance section(s) at the end of the game? If so, yeah I'd have a few choice words lol
"!" exclamation point is also often called "bang" or at least it used to be, still does in certain contexts but it is a perfectly valid way to refer to them.
WHY THE FUCK IS NOBODY WATCHING YOUR OTHER VIDEOS LIKE THIS ONE?! You do a great job of making a game I have never heard of or seen seem interesting! Keep up the good work!
You are my fav "new" youtuber and idk how you do it but these videos have a very nice polish to them that will help when you invariably blow the fuck up
which music is that around 0:17 it's triggering my nostalgia senses but i never played Dragon Quest... maybe music from the Seiken Densetsu franchise? Or Chrono Trigger? Edit: Did some research. I watched so many videos but never understood these random pop ups, I love it, thanks for doing so much work. 😅
You could make a video on how to farm pomegranates and itd still be more interesting/entertaining/educational than any other pomegranate related videos on the cyber space and id probably watch it like 5 times in a row
@@seer6251 Clayfighter was an ancient memory for me, locked away till the end of time. Seeing that avatar made me go "I know I've seen this somewhere, just can't place it."

the rhymes of these videos are so slick and fine, dispite the fact they usually end with dick all time but makes for a fun video to watch. honestly hope you see a lot of youtube fame, regaurdless of some painful copyright claim
It's legitimately done by hand. Absolutely insane that it's possible. Just happens to be simple enough of a game that the results are physically replicable
Am I living in an alternate dimension?? Isn't this game called Dragon WARRIOR? I've never heard of it called Dragon Quest and I played the living piss outta this game as a kid.
If America counts as an alternate dimension, then yes. The Japanese title is and always has been Dragon Quest, it was changed in localization to Dragon Warrior and stayed that way for the first 3 games (I think) before finally just switching to the Japanese name from then on
First 7 games, technically. The first 4 were on the NES, 5 and 6 weren't released in the West and 7 came out for PS1. 8 and later used "Quest". It was all because of a trademark dispute; there was a tabletop RPG called Dragonquest. When the trademark expired, Enix reverted the title from Warrior to Quest.
The exclamation mark ! is also commonly known as Bang, or Chick/Chik/Chk like the band ChickChickChick en.wikipedia.org/wiki/!!! or the Interrobang en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interrobang
For anyone wondering, this was showcased in GDQ 2019 by nescardinatliy. Its honestly one of the most entertaining speedruns, ever.
Thanks for info. It looks absolutely mental
Incredible anyone was able to do that at a live event lol. One of the few adgq runs I watched completely.
@seer6251 Nescardinality is a beast. Been watching hin for ages
"Quiet mother, I am playing Dragon Quest."
Idk why but that bit had me howling with laughter. Amazing work as always dude.
Really respect how much time and research you put into any videos you make. From D2 to TF2 and now Dragon Quest 1 Speedrun. Keep it up Seer !
Thank you very much!
This video is so good that I saw it before it came out

I think you pronounce "!" as the alert sound effect from metal gear. These speedrunners are truly straddling genres.
I am so annoyed I didn't think about the Metal Gear Solid sound effect lol. Absolutely fits
@@seer6251 we can only give you a 9.9/10 for this one im afraid
The Metal Gear sound is so overdone that it's annoying. Glad Seer didn't use it.
@@mintymus you'll hear it less if you go outside once in a while
@@Demilich23 But then I have to deal with children like you playing it on their phones.
still a huge fan of how much time you put into editing these videos
Perfect way to describe how I feel about speedruns too.
I speedran this video in 9:53. I think that if I don't pause to drink I can get a below 9:30, but that remains to be seen.
RNG hunters these days do not test thousands of combinations. They use TAS data. The TASers look into the code to work out how the RNG works.
Not all of us do. The route I used in my speedrun was done through simple trial and error. I find the puzzle aspect of figuring out the fastest way to do something to be very fun.

The correct pronunciation for "!" Is the metal gear alert sound effect.
That is so perfect and I'm sad I missed it haha
"Insurance claim" made me question my own sanity because of how funny I found it.
NESCardinality set these requirements super high perfectly manipulating rng that 8 years later still nobody could even contend with.
What a guy.
"!" exclamation point is also often called "bang" or at least it used to be, still does in certain contexts but it is a perfectly valid way to refer to them.
Good to know actually! I'll put that little fact away for some random moment in my life lol

you remind me of AVGN sometimes in your videos
thank you for not being one of THOSE youtubers that put a lot of music in their vids without showing whence it is

A better way to pronounce 1 exclamation point is the sound from metal gear when you are spotted by enemies

"insurance claim" lmao
I don't give a shit about speed running, but I love Dragon Quest, so let's see what this video has to offer.
EDIT: This was hilarious. Great video.
Thank you!
@@seer6251 You're welcome 👍
If it helps: "!" is pronounced "Bang" by the In The Groove community. Not the shot sound, just the word "bang".
! is pronounced "Bang" when it's by itself like that
Great video seer , as always keep that shit up
do a speedrun of "silent service"
This game becomes super short when using RNG manipulation as all 99% of the experience is just grinding levels and gold.
Alefgard looks like an advance wars map
You belong in comedy central.
So in short, you have to be a human computer to obtain the DQ1 world record.
