I’m at the beginning of block 4, and can say the course has definitely changed a lot for me. I’m like you, my art goals are less focused on realism, commissions, etc. and I way prefer water based painting. But the amount I’ve learned about art fundamentals that transfers to any medium is pretty profound. Also I e noticed a big mindset shift in how I approach a painting, and bring it to completion. I don’t plan on ever being a professional painter, or an oil painter, but I’ve found a lot of worth from this class. Cheers!

Hi Tessa - wow that's so interesting!! Thanks for sharing! I think I would learn so much from the course. Its super time intensive though and as someone who always feels they are struggling with lack of time it was just too much for me. Congrats for getting to block 4, thats awesome :)

This was a great video! Have seen several artists do the unboxing and talk about the course but you are the first I've seen come back to talk about the whole experience of DOING the course! Am still considering if I could afford this but it's been great to hear your actual experience . TFS!!!

Thanks for the update, Taria. I purchased the course after watching your review and have just finished Block One as well. Those gradients kicked my butt at first, but they are slowly getting better. I agree with your comments about the program, and instructors being so accessible. It was a pretty big investment in myself, but I think it’s totally worth it. I found very little odour as no turpentine or mineral spirits are used. Just linseed oil. Now on to the proportional drawing part of Block Two 🙂🎨

Thank you for doing a follow up on your experience with Evolve. I've seen other videos that promote the program and there are no updates. You and Mathrilda are the only ones I know of who have continued with the program and shared your experiences. I just started Evolve and I'm excited with what I've completed so far!

I just found the Evolve program today and started looking for evaluations of it. That led me here. You are convincing me that the program is for me. I started painting in acrylics a year and a half ago, taking a few classes with professionals located nearby. I have found I do like taking hours to work at a time. I do like paying close attention to detail. But I have felt I've had trouble figuring out how to evolve and learn. My teacher has not always been helpful at helping me to evolve step by step. One question I have is whether I can work at a slower pace and maybe take twice as long to get through the course as they intend.

      Hi Jim!
I am also planning on taking the course in the near future. Like you I did a tone of research. You can take the course at your own pace. If you spent 7 hours a week on evolve you should be able to finish blocks 1-4 in about a year (don’t quote me on it). It is self paced, so multiple years are also a possibility. However the following exercise only comes available after you finished and submitted the previous one. I hope I could be of some help.

Congratulation on completing Block 1. No knowledge is ever wasted. If you fortunate to take the full course don't hesitate. Have a phenomenal 2022. Like your name change, good decision. Hard work yes, but it will pay off. You will still have your own unique style. I've been inspired by some of your stuff. Always enjoy yourself.🖌✏✒🥂💅

    Fab follow up, Taria.
Your oil painting experience is an eye-opener, loved the first video, and love your experimentation here; plus being honest about your experience... I think all art experience is your bag, but watercolours and Sketching have the love handles, the art medium that sustains you through thick and thin. Yet experimenting teaches and ensures you don't get stuck in a rut, or as writers say, get blocked when doing the same over and over. All play is progressive.
Weirdly, I've been having a similar journey, but with coloured pencils, and pastels, experimenting and practicing to find the medium that I could spend more time on for the rest of my life learning... Afterall, art is a constant learning curve, and love you admit to lacking patience with traditional oil applications. For me, I'm loving coloured pencils for realism and botanical subjects but that takes ten times as long to create compared to watercolour paint yet so rewarding after the ugly stage blossoms, and equally love the freedom of watercolours and Sketching when given a limited time frame. I've bought Rosemary & Co. spotter brushes (which handle beautifully) to try watercolour botanicals. Early days, but the layering principle is same as coloured pencil except being patient to let each layer dry. Art for me isn't a career option; it's simply essential mindfulness and pure joy. Wish I'd come to enjoying art earlier in life! Wish this channel existed 30 years ago! Younger viewers are so lucky... I had to go to the library and read books to learn the valuable information you share. Still, from that standpoint, I love tech.. reaching the masses.
I've been scanning my amateur studies to understand value and edges. Can't afford a professional course at the moment, but knuckling down on the basics has taught me heaps and more practice builds confidence, for me.
Your paintings of this first block are wonderful. The values and edges pop and I totally relate, as these exercises do apply to all mediums.
As an aside... love seeing Jemima assisting, bless her. And, I just know you'd be super conscious about supplies that could harm her (especially with oil solvents)... a friend lost her beloved dog to tinsel chewing many Christmases ago and it's been banned in mine and my family houses since! Love you keep your beautiful 'assistant' safe.
Totally loving the 'side' art experiments, even though Urban Sketching is your true love. You can 'window shop' but me thinks you'll be forever faithful to Urban/Rural Sketching on location.
Happy New Year, Taria, Duncan, and Jemima
    ❤️

Thanks so much for your message Wen! Glad the video was interesting. I think I must have edited it out but I did have a little bit saying don't worry, there are no chemicals involved here at all. its paint and linseed oil. But yes super conscious of her being around the paint - potentially ingesting or just getting a paws in it and treading through the house! I usually kick her out after 10 mins of obligatory petting...ha ha. Hope you had a lovely Xmas and New Year Wen!! :)

Thank you so much for doing a follow up! I’ve been dabbling in online courses, Domestika and free programs like Draw a Box and it’s nice to see a program that seems to really stress value studies as that’s something I’ve struggled with.

Glad it was helpful! Yeh this is another level of training - its everything you need all in one programme if its the direction you want to go in. Ooh I love Domestika courses so very much though. I think its nice to be able to pay a smaller amount and try out lots of different things, especially if you are exploring etc. We are very lucky to have so many options at our fingertips....but sometimes that choice is overwhelming - I don't know what to focus on sometimes!

Thanks for sharing! Your paintings turned out really good. I recently completed my winter semester where I took a drawing 1 class and loved it. It was graphite and charcoal only. I can see using that for this course for getting the tonal values for creating the forms. My instructor said we should be spending at least 10 hours a week on each large drawing, 18×24, and she was right. I signed up for her watercolor class for the spring, but may look into this company after that. Not sure I want to take up oils or acrylic painting though.

Thanks Lavinia! They focus on oiks because apparently its the most forgiving medium for beginners to learn with - I believe back in the day they used charcoal.... As Evolve explained to me - everything they teach is pretty much applicable to all mediums. I know they have a few students who work alot in the digital field too...good on you for all the training you're doing, that's great. Eesh - I fear I just couldn't work on the same thing for 10 hours - but I have learned that about myself now - so I feel thats positive :)

Looks like painting by numbers as art copyists had been done in Asia. Transfer line drawing from photo life size/canva size. Then use 4 grays - Light Grey-Medium Gray-Deep Gray-Dark Gray, you bought from them. SO far so good. Then, you mix grays from the 4 basic set to get 7 ( 3 "buffers") for "gradients" aka blending the edges between dark and medium lights (black/white). SO far so good. Can you paint on your own? Well, you either learn to draw or photo copy anything you like!
Thanks for sharing. IDK how expensive it is but it is effective to get basic paint skills.

Thank you for the update!. I checked out the website and they say they use linseed oil as a medium and it doesn't smell so it can be used indoors. I'm interested in how you found the ordour. Was it strong, weak, lingering or non existent? I'm in a small flat and any chemical smells would be deal breaker. Thank you. :)

Good on you. Not for me. I want the freedom to do what I want when I want and am willing to learn by "dibs and dabs." Biggest thing I want to learn is to do my "art" for me and not for approval from someone else. It's the pill I swallow daily to make me a happier person, who deals daily with chronic pain and depression. So happy art just for fun and I like playing with my art toys. Thanks for what I learned in your course.

I was thinking of doing the Evolve course but I have had second thoughts. I am convinced that it is geared towards laborious mechanical copying which, for me, is not the art that I aspire to. I think I will be much better with online tutors such as Paint Coach (Chris Fornataro), Malcolm Dewey, Proko, and the many many other excellent art teachers who can be found on You Tube. My bank balance is much happier about my decision also. Best to all who read this.

    • @ritawilbur6128
      @ritawilbur6128 Год назад +8

I know this is ages later, but I want to clarify: the aim of this course is NOT to copy. In the first block you are copying simple photos, but that's in order to focus on the skills of 1) mixing and using paints, b) handling the brush, c) reading and blocking values, d) creating gradients. In later blocks you set up your own still lifes, there are master copy studies, speed paintings, painting from a photo. The purpose is to teach you all the skills you need to be able to paint whatever and however you want in the end.

I'm also a bit impatient. Working three to four hours on a piece is much too long for me. About one hour is the maximum (both skething with ink and the coloring with watercolor). Maybe this will change in the future.

Im totally with you on that Paula - 4 hours is far too much for me - my body actually starts aching too. Im having a terrible problem with my neck, shoulders and arm at the moment! Painting for 4 hours (plus breaks) at an easel is super aggravating it too.

  • @sixmercer2504

How cool! I REALLY wish I had the money to do this! I can definitely see how it can teach you far more than say...hanging out with Bob Ross for a half an hour every day like my mom and I did when I was growing up. No shame...he's the MAN! What an incredible person and skilled talent he was and he is so missed by the art community (if anyone has not seen the documentary about him done with his son please do check it out. It's on Netflix. And if you choose not to, please just know never to buy any Bob Ross merchandise. The people who worked with him really screwed him and his family over and they are making millions off of his name by selling merchandise).
Wow sorry. Got off on one there. But this is incredible. I was born without depth perception so values (although I use them to determine distance and size) I have the HARDEST time with. I love to draw in pencil and to watch people who use charcoal and light and dark values to establish where everything is and make the picture have what you normal people see as depth, what I determine as depth but see differently, it blows my mind and I have a long way to go to get to a point where my drawings look anything like theirs.
This course would be fantastic for me and I wondered about the supplies because I don't have a computer only my phone so I wouldn't be able to print anything...but I CAN draw those outlines so I probably could have saved myself. It was good to hear they send you a box for each chapter. I hate the fact that I won't be able to do this. I wish I could. I am disabled and almost entirely bedbound at this point. Still fighting for disability to approve me since I have a very rare genetic condition that isn't on their precious list of normal disabilities.
If I hear good news from them I will definitely sign up. They owe me a huge back dated check for these past 7 years.
You are doing a fantastic job! Those paintings are really wonderful and look great next to the photos. So keep it up. I wonder if I could tolerate the work load. If I can go at my own speed than maybe. But severe chronic fatigue and narcolepsy are my biggest enemies.
Please keep us posted about your coursework should you decide to take on the rest of the program! I am dying to see your progress. I am just a year in to finding art as a passion and really taking it seriously. I'm all over the place but being in bed I mostly stick to drawing in my sketchbooks. But I have an art studio plan for my spare bedroom now as my mother has been packing her house to move to a retirement community, I will be getting my late step dad's mechanical drafting table that is enormous. So that is hopefully going to be what drags me out of my cocoon and into another room and out of bed. I also have COVID after being fully vaccinated and only seeing my mom for Christmas who tested positive after being vaccinated and boosted. She got really sick. I just feel like crap. Stay safe everyone! It's busting right through every barrier, this mutation.
It's so cool to hear how much you've learned and how vast the experience has taught you after this first phase. Keep it up. I hope you do for your own growth. I am now a brand new subscriber and we be excited to see what you do next! Thank you for sharing your experience with us! And I deeply apologize for my lengthy comment. The internet is my only interaction with the world so I tend to ramble on and on. Take care. Opps! I am already subscribed! I loved your watercolor pencils for urban sketching video! I might go follow that one today. Thank you!

Hi Six - I watched the documentary about Bob Ross, I was almost in tears at the end - its such a heartbreaking story but I am glad they finally got the truth out into the world.
I am SO sorry to hear you have Covid and I wish you a very speedy recovery. You don't need to print anything with Evolve, they literally send you every single item you need to do the course - except some sort of easel or board...and like kitchen towel....but everything else they send to you, including all the print outs.
It's a big commitment but I feel like if you are certain this is your path then this kind of training is second to none and will get you where you need to be.
I feel I am a bit of a jack of all trades and realism/studio painting or even being a professional artist is actually not what I aspire for - I know - I learned this about myself! I think I enjoy sort being a bit more casual, scribbling in my sketchbook, catching bits of life or just practicing stuff from photos - being free and loose when I want, trying different styles - but then also writing blog posts, making videos etc - it keeps my roaming interest occupied doing such a variety of things.
Im glad I know that about myself now.
Anyway - wishing you all the best, thanks for being a subscriber - I really appreciate it :D
