The World's First Pediatric Bilateral Hand Transplant | L. Scott Levin | TEDxPenn

Dr. L. Scott Levin MD, FACS is no stranger to connecting anatomic structures with perfect precision. He is also no stranger to restoring function to patients who have lost their hands and connecting them back to the world they live in. In 2015, through innovative orthopaedic, plastic, and transplant surgery, Dr. Levin performed the first bilateral hand transplant on a child. After two successful surgeries on adults, Dr. Levin led a team of 40 surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses and gave new hands to nine-year-old Zion Harvey in a marathon 11-hour procedure.
An accomplished clinician, Dr. Levin is the Director of the Hand Transplant Program at Penn Medicine and at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He is the Paul B. Magnuson Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine and a Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery. Published in 316 peer-reviewed journal articles, 80 book chapters and 11 books, he specializes in surgery of the hand and upper extremities.

Scott Levin is truly AMAZING!! He did six surgeries on my daughter’s hands- she has syndactyle (two fingers fused on both hands), with complex tendon and bone abnormalities. She now has 95+% function, and even plays trumpet!! THANK YOU, Dr. Levin!!
