      Yeah, Puyo is loads of fun, especially tsu as the countering rule just adds so much depth. In this game there's no real point in doing more than a five chain, but when you can undo your opponents five with your own: then it becomes satisfying as it opens up a whole layer of strategies that goes into a deep rabbit-hole, trying to get the longest chain while taking cracks at your oponent with short chains, trying not to leave yourself weak by keeping numerous options open, get's crazy when you play against other people!

    • @5688gamble
      @5688gamble  4 года назад +6

      @@RoysGamingGarret Stairs can be efficient if used correctly, you can't just spam 3-1, you have to be willing to get creative with your transition and your tail, saito special is perfect for stairs, though it connects into sandwich too, actually all patterns can link into each other and tails can be used mid chain too! Sandwich has less piece dependency than stairs in general tho and avoids lots of costly splits, plus it's more intuitive, you'll be using it on your second and third floors with stairs anyway, most likely! Sandwiches are usually faster, I would also consider GTR a kind of modified sandwich, I switched from GTR to straight keys, back to GTR mainly but my efficiency has improved, I can get 15 chains without needing an overly kind RNG now and deal with or dish out a bit of harassment! More impressive than a fluky 17! Tho I'll never get that lucky again, had a 16 chain destroyed by a one chain just there, so yeah.. Ploop, garbage lands on the X, dead! I don't mind losing but that was painful!

      Almar AZL Max is 19 but with Puyo 1 mechanics there's no way to glitch away pieces you don't need so stalling is hard and the inability to counter any garbage the computer randomly sends it becomes difficult, add to it that this game uses 5 colours rather than the 3\4 you typically use early in later games and it's pretty much a no go, 14\15 in DrRsMBM is really good, anything more is as much luck as skill (both are essential).

      I love the Puyo Puyo series, it's a simple concept and easy to pick up but I am still learning to this day and I will never be done, yet every time something new clicks and I pick up a new pattern or learn to efficiently transition from one pattern to another it's so satisfying! Especially when you build a large chain and bury your opponent in garbage! I am focusing on linking patterns such as sandwich and stairs together and tailing these days, tail patterns and how they can be linked and extended, nothing beats building a nice, long tail and setting it off and it gives a new understanding of how the Puyo fall and connect! I am a long way from complete mastery but I feel a level of confidence and competence I never thought possible when I first looked at this series seriously, I could only dream of the ability I have now yet I still want to get better, game is more addictive than heroin and setting off a large complex chain is as good as sex! Sorry Lisa, but it is! Lol!

      @@5688gamble You are definitely a really skilled player. I can basically do a five chain stair pattern in my sleep... with four colors... but I suck at transitioning to the upper layer, and I'm still trying to grasp sandwiching. I feel like sandwiching is a lot more effective than stairs due to its plasticity and better protection against color conflict, but my god, it is so difficult to set up. I know how sandwiching works - I can see that this chain was a giant line of sandwiches - but I don't know how to actually build it. I really hope I can get as good as you one day.

    • @5688gamble
      @5688gamble  3 года назад +1

      @@jballs5434 Just keep building different sandwiches over and over until it becomes ingrained, aim to get your transition up as soon as you can, look for opportunities to build something like this: puyonexus.com/chainsim/chain/6z8Mn if you were to get a double red and double green to open, you'd have the main part done right away! But there are other options, just watch your next box and plan it out, remember that once you have started your second floor you can build stuff up there even if you haven't finished the base yet.

      Maybe some of them, there are players like Sibukazu who'd just scoff and do 18, however it's the harassment chains that are hard to deal with at high levels, it gets to a point where 17, while it will always require some luck, isn't that hard, I just uploaded a 15 in about 30 seconds, 15 isn't hard at all if your opponent does nothing, arguably 16 isn't too bad either. But when you watch players like Momoken and Tomokun you realize there is a lot more to it than building a big chain fast, as the moment your opponent is going at a similar speed, you have to decide whether you can outchain fast or whether fighting with harassment is better. And you better be ready to react to what your opponent does too. The top players would destroy me!

    How do you sandwich so cleanly in OPP? I've tried practicing with 5 colors but I always find myself running out of places to put my Puyos especially when trying to do the second floor.

      2 more is possible, I'm sure someone has done it in Mean Bean Machine! I know for a fact it's been done in Puyo Puyo, I've done it myself, guess that's the world record for Puyo Puyo standard rules, but I'm not the only one who can max out the combo.

    • @5688gamble
      @5688gamble  7 лет назад +9

      will leese I first played this game when I was 5 but it wasn't till I was in my early 20s that I started learning advanced patterns and only quite recently that my color management has reached a high enough level to attempt stuff like this. It's a simple sandwich pattern. Puyo isn't my main talent though and this çhain isnt the biggest thing I have sandwiched, my next-door neighbor can attest to that;-)

    • @5688gamble
      @5688gamble  3 года назад

      I play A LOT of Puyo, I'm more consistent than this now! You learn as many shapes and patterns as you can, then once you can build long chains without thinking, you work on stuff like avoiding splits which are slower) and on observation, harassment and defensive play.

  • @LarviStarSLJ
    @LarviStarSLJ 5 лет назад +6

    How do you...even play 5 color Puyo THAT fast, and get a 17 chain in under a minute, out of all things!?

    • @5688gamble
      @5688gamble  4 года назад +4

      Lucky pieces. Also there are rules you can follow to optimise placement and maximise the piece types you can accommodate in future better but this is easier with four colours and trivial with three, with 5 colours there's every chance of a piece you can't use. It's hard to explain exactly the best way to optimise things, just remember you can play with different chain forms, different transitions and how to switch between them and incorporate tails, etc then learn to see the whole picture rather than focusing on one part of the chain or one colour you need at a time, eg there is one part where I could have finished a sandwich but start another instead because I can see a better colour combination coming up and realise that not only do I need to accommodate that but I can have more options by holding off on doing the most tempting thing (it's easier in tsu onwards because you can see the next 2 pieces in preview and in modes where you can see the next four it is much easier again) in the end tho I was lucky as I got greedy and built myself into a corner (remember in original pp you cannot glitch pieces away nor could I have rotated pieces wedged in so that last piece had to be the right way up too!) so a mixture of luck, intuition, skill and knowledge of the forms and how to construct them, remember not to be rigid, build what you can, switch between sandwich types, switch bet sandwich and stairs using basic tails(wasn't necessary or logical with the puyo I was given) and learn to extend them both vertically and horizontally, you can also note that you can switch tail forms and do stuff that looks pretty clever to others eyes (I know the satisfaction in building a complicated looking tail is greater to me than a lucky 17 chain of basic sandwiches using basic 1-1-2 and 2-1-1 structures) keep playing and it gets easier as things click this is a game where you can always get better and it's competitive nature is genius, puyo puyo tsu is an amazing battle of wit and skill like chess!) it really is a shame it never caught on as well here as in Japan:-(

    If my maths is correct... (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16384, 32768, 65536)
    That last combo was worth 40 X 65,536 which is... (655,360 X 2 = 1,310,720 x2) equal to 2,621,440 Points at the end of the 17 combo.
