- Mehboob Jaan’s very first 78 rpm disc was recorded by HMV in Feb 1932. She sang in Hindi, Urdu, Marathi & Kannada. She sang raag sangeet, bhajans, ghazals &even film songs. In 1936 she sang two songs in the Marathi film ‘Saavkari Paas’ & is said to have played a role in the film too. Very little is known about this talented musician who was perhaps born around 1900 and appears to be musically active during 1925-40. Her very first 78 rpm disc was recorded by HMV in Feb 1932 - Shri Girija jane Shriram- in Raag khambavati, and Dattaguru in Raag Sohoni. She sang in Hindi, Urdu, Marathi and Kannada, and seems to have had a wide range - raag sangeet, bhajans, ghazals and even film songs. In 1936 she sang two songs in the Marathi film ‘Saavkari Paas’ and is said to have played a role in the film too. The last one hears of her is around 1965 when she lived a lonely life in Pune and died there around that time. Mehboob Jaan sings the devaranama ‘Krishna nee Begane baa’ set in the Kannada language. Thank you for a well researched presentation about an artist for whom not much is found on the Net. Thanks for a touching account of this exceptionally talented artist. Mehboob Jaan Sahiba's sweet and melodious voice, with such a range, is simply mesmerizing. I strongly feel that her resonating voice is reminiscent of artists like Kaali Jaan Sahiba and a couple other artists some of whom you had featured in the same presentation of "Sureele..." several weeks ago. The timber in her voice (and those of others) is extremely ear-pleasing, which in her case is beautifully carried in voice modulation at even higher octaves. The "smoothness" remains ever-present.
I can't help but compare her with the "Big Sister" of the present-day popular music, whose syrupy, sugary and week voice becomes so shrill at higher octaves... and that is true not just for the past decade or two but even in the 50s and 60s.
This is where one can appreciate a sharp contrast while recognizing the absolute mastery and the "true talent" of the classical singer.
As you aptly said,, Mehboob Jaan Sahiba, naturally, must have been a formidable threat to her contemporary singers, who resorted to pathetic backstabbing to put down the competition by defaming her.
We see a "double standard" of morality and professional ethics not just among men and women, but also among women. A man might have a big heart to praise another talented man, but never a woman who is gracious and kind to another gifted woman artist.
Also, many women artists of that era had some male figure promoting them... be it her father, teacher, a patron or a lover/paramour. In the absence of a powerful enough man, a woman was "handicapped." In case of Mehboob Jaan Sahiba, unfounded rumors probably caused more damage to her and might have been her greatest "disadvantage."
There was definitely no shortage of talent.
It is indeed sad that a gifted and deserving singer, with such sweet voice, did not receive patronage of a royal or noble of her times, or support of a genuine and sincere friend/benefactor..
Additionally, if her original training was in Carnatic Music, chances are that North vs South "Gut-baaji" might have excluded her with great hostility, thus, preventing her from claiming her rightful place.
And because the artists of her times neither had agents nor did they use publicity stunts, only eyewitnesses to their live programs or performances at invitation, were their means of getting due attention.
Incidentally, the movie you had mentioned for which she sang two songs, "Savkari Pash" (Marathi, 1925; re-made in 1938), sadly gives her no credit even in the International Movie Data Base.

सर, क्या उस दौर में कुछ ऐसी आर्टिस्ट बाई या जान के अलावा "कुंवर", सरनेम भी लगाती थीं। खासतौर पर बुंदेलखंड में। क्या सागर की वेणीं कुंवर या बेनीबाई व रिक्खाबाई या रिखाबाई के रिकार्ड भी मिलते हैं? इनकी सांगीतिक प्रतिभा के विषय में कुछ डीटेल मिल सकते हैं क्या?
