I Tried Using ChromeOS Flex As My Daily Driver For Work

- I set out to use only Chrome OS Flex to do all of my work for one week, but ultimately went crawling back to other desktop systems. Here are my thoughts on the experience and what I think Flex needs in order to become my primary workstation.

Cool, Brandon!
I've searched for web apps to replace the ones I usually have on Linux or Mac and I found pretty good free solutions for my needs, from drawing to photo editing, to video editing, music compose, to coding games. My only problem is that, when I have to deal with some programs like Unity, there is no way to use it other than the Linux container, but besides that, other browser based gamedev environments worked like a charm. So, I'm on it most of my day.
But I agree with you that the file manager could be way better.
I am also trying to switch to web apps wherever possible, even when using regular operating systems like Windows and Linux. But I will still try to get the word out about things I think Flex needs, hopefully someday Google will see that there are users who want to see Flex grow and improve!
You can activate linux mode and install another file manager
I wonder if you’d have better luck using Brunch for the display controls.
I was trying it out with a Surface Go Laptop 2 and was able to set it to turn the display off but not go to sleep when connected to my monitor.
It's possible. Really I am just hoping that someone at Google will see one of my videos and decide there are people out there who would like to see them improve Flex so we can actually use it!
I use Ambient mode so my screen doesn't go to sleep.
Hello, Brandon. Thank you for sharing your perspective; you basically summed up how I feel about Chrome OS Flex. Continue your excellent work. One question: do you have a solution for remotely accessing Chrome OS from Windows rather than the other way around?
No, I'm afraid I don't have a way to access a Chrome OS device remotely :-/ That would be another thing to add to the list!
Chrome has a package for this and it works fine
Can u install android apps in chrome os flex ?. I was planning to install it on my parents old pc
No you can't.
I don't even know what you are talking about. It's the kind of thing most people hardly care or use. BTW, I have been using the Lenovo Chromebook Duet for quite sometime. The Google Apps generally do most of the work. Best part is the battery life of the device. I have been using it for live conferencing from 10AM to 5:30PM on Google Meet still I have enough battery life to spare.
That's fair. I am not saying that Chrome OS is not usable, but it is missing a lot of basic features that other operating systems have. Since Flex is something you install yourself, not something that comes with your device like on a Chromebook, I feel like it is competing with other free systems that you install yourself, like Linux, which you can download and set up about as easily as you can Flex, and the gap in features is quite large. So yes you can use Chrome OS and Google Apps and be fine for everything. But you can also just install Fedora or similar and do everything Chrome can do plus more. That is my point, I just want them to make improvements because I see potential in Flex.
I like chrome os flex but the file manager is useless its peace off shit
Nemo is far better i challenge my self to use chrome os flex i have to say
I love it so far
haha 2/7 interesting that means its not for intense work or somethings just dont work
The thing is that I COULD do all of my work on it. But I also could just install Linux and have everything work easier and nicer. That is biggest issue I have with Flex, especially since they do not include Android support, there is nothing to set it apart or above other free options out there.
I tried coding with it and it worked fine for small apps but it failed to build and compile big apps and i switched to linux. Now am using KDE neon and i love it. Thanks for the video though, I look forward to the next one always
