We live in a campground in our travel trailer in the summer. Our other full time “family community” get together often and make a big pot of stew. We use a large cast iron Dutch oven over the fire. We each donate to the pot just what ever we have. Someone might take ground beef or stew meat. Another a can on tomatoes, corn, Lima beans, pinto beans. Just what ever you have. It turns out delicious and we all take home leftovers. So we get two meals! There are about 20 of us. We set up long tables and eat together. We have a wonderful time. Thanks Becky

Same, grew up "modest" in Ohio, later moved to wealthier areas on west coast. Was surprised by the food waste. Even to this day (I'm 57) if one of my painting clients offer me ANY type of food they plan to get rid of I take and either use it or give to a neighbor. Now during inflation nobody I know knows how to change their eating habits . They still eat out or buy expensive ingredients and I'm getting by on half-off meats and dry goods .

YUMMY! I still make this meal when I am too tired to cook all day... cook the wide egg-noodles, drain, melt some butter...and then more if you like over then noodles. Mix the brick of farmers cheese with the warm noodles. Add a can of peas or some steamed broccoli, warm it all up in a pot on low add more butter if you want, salt & pepper to taste. OH MY YUMMY!

If you add too much water and the liquid is a bit thin or too much of it, add some dried potato flakes. It's very cheap, and will add more calories and bulk without diluting the flavour. I keep potato flakes just for that purpose. A little goes a long way when thickening soups and stews. If you can get some of the flakes flavoured with things like onion, butter or cheese even better! I only buy them when they are on special offer though.

This reminds me of the story I Hurd as a child in school. “Stone Soup”. It’s about a traveler who came into a small village that was starving. He was hungry too. They all said they didn’t have any food to eat. He told them to make a fire and he had a big pot. He was going to make stone soup. He kept saying, “ potatoes would be really good in this or onion would be good in this, ext…. Everyone would tell him I have this or that to add to the soup. Before they all new it, they all had a delicious soup and had more than enough! They learn to work together. Thought of that story when you said they could all pitch in and share making meals. Like Jesus feeding the multitude. God always gives us what we need but we have to work together. Going to make this tonight. Looking at it made me hungry 😋. Sorry so long! Thank you for your recipes on a budget. God bless 🙏🙏👣👣🙌🙌🥰🥰

    Howdy:
LOVE the video! When I was a kid in the early 50's, my parents both worked 2 jobs. There were 6 kids in my family. Time and money were tight and so food cheap enough to fill up 6 kids. Mom and Dad used to get the "welfare" foods that we had to wait in line for on Saturday mornings once a month. Elbow macaroni, rice, butter, big blocks of Orange cheese, canned meat (SPAM), sugar, and powdered milk. Anyway the one meal that I remember (which was a favorites of mine) was when mom cooked up a big pot of macaroni, then each of us got a bowl of it covered in butter and milk. A little sat and pepper to taste, a spoon, and I was in Heaven! Another "meal" was coffee bread for breakfast. Mom took a big slab of home made bread, put it on a plate, covered it in strong, hot, Black coffee and sugar. That was breakfast about 5 days a week. My Grammy baked 40 loaves of bread every Thursday. The bread was for her kids and other family members, plus some for neighbors. What happened to those days of "love thy neighbor" and "I AM my brothers keeper"? Please keep up the great videos. These cheap meal videos make me remember how good I really have it, and how far we've come.
    God bless:
    Dave

In the 1970s I was in the boy scouts, we cooked similar community meals when camping. It was generally called 'Mulligan Stew'. Typically it was either hamburger based or canned chicken and then basically everyone contributed a canned item to the pot. Spaghetti or macaroni and water was added toward the end and it was brought to a rolling boil. Now I know where the idea for the meal came from, thank you.

I did her chicken and dumplings the other day, so good, but we had a lot left over. My mother said we are freezing the rest right? I was surprised, she usually doesn't want to save anything I cook! LOL! I'm learning how to cook since my aged mom came to live with me, the Hillbilly Kitchen has been a blessing to us both. I do it step by step and just do everything she does and it always works out, I go to the stove, back to the computer, back to the stove and just do everything she does. This is a big help.

When I was growing up my grandma used to make brown flower gravy and boiled potatoes. She would put flower into a cast iron pan and cook it until it turned brown and then add water to make gravy, then pour over boiled potatoes. That's when times were tough and we couldn't afford meat.

      Freshenuf1: Hi!
I enjoyed your share. It reminded me of one of my Children's, my Son Brandon's favorite Books when he was in the 1st grade. It was indeed called "STONE SOUP". I distinctly remember because it had an artist drawing of a Pig in a Chef's Hat. A very poignant story! My Son has NEVER forgotten that story, that Book still. I'm Native American Indian of the Croatan-Lumbee Tribe and it certainly falls in our values and traditions. My Son is 33years young/old depending on YOUR viewpoint and is quite successful in his Career...As a Native American Indian in these times, I know that IS rare. However, Our Tribe, Our Nation did NOT grow up on a reservation. We were NOT forced off our Lands and Property. We are the Tribe that saved the English Colonists from 'THE LOST COLONY'. The word CROATAN left on the tree...is Our Tribe. We DID NOT KILL THEM, WE TOOK THEM IN AND TOOK CARE OF THEM. There's an outdoor Summer Play called "STRIKE AT THE WIND". that explains A LOT about my Tribe.
Anyway, may God continue to Bless you and all in this forum!✝️💗🙏🕊️🎺🇺🇲

Thanks for giving us good ideas of how we can make inexpensive tasty meals. My mother was a child during the Great Depression and she would tell me about how things were back then. I grew up in the 50s and 60s and she would make all sorts of meals that I always thought were special. I didn’t realize they were inexpensive. So lots of these things you’re making aren’t new to me but take me back. We are all going to need to get creative in the days to come.
