I liked it. Of course, I cried. Unless I misunderstood, it was encouraging people to reach out and foster/ adopt. But, I feel the solution is way deeper than that. We need to get to the root of the problem of too many children being brought into this world unloved and not being able to financially or mentally being able to provide for their child. The problem will just continue and never get better with just fostering/adopting. So, as families foster or adopt, the population must go down and stay down. If it isn’t, then the problem is not being addressed.

Good to hear that you liked it despite the few issues. I hadn’t even seen a trailer honestly advertising it.

It hasn’t had a lot of marketing and that’s not going to help it at all. Since I can relate to the source material, I figured I would give it a try. I was probably biased because of my experiences, but I enjoyed the film.

Yes! Great point about this film avoiding obvious tropes and not settling for a fairy tale dynamic with the adoption, and I agree that it is faith-based without being too preachy. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 👌👌👌

Thanks for the comment. Avoiding the fairytale ending made it feel very real to me. I really enjoyed that aspect of it.

I agree that the film presented some realities that are often hidden in the dominant adoption narrative in the US. I thought they missed a real opportunity in the call to action. Even though they included the stat early on that 70% of the kids in the foster system are there solely due to neglect via poverty, the film was a call to action for the other 30%. And that’s an important call to action, but where is the conversation about supporting families that are needlessly being separated? Why aren’t we asking folks to support those families (in addition to caring for kids who cannot return to their families)? I also wondered- could this story have been told from the 1st person perspective of an adoptee rather than an adopter? I know that would have drastically changed the story, but my point is- when are we ever going to centralize the voice of adoptees in the adoption narrative? They’ve been sidelined for far too long and it’s time someone make space for them to authentically tell their story.

A film from the adoptee’s perspective would be interesting. Usually when it’s done from their perspective, the film presents a fairytale scenario. A good script would be needed along with the right director who could get a great performance out of younger actors. That’s a film I’d like to see.

@@Boblovesmovies or even from the adult adoptee’s perspective - reflecting back? It would also take a ton of emotional labor from a committee of adoptees to write and/or inform the project, but I think we need it. Again, I’m with you in appreciating the ways in which this film broke from typical fairytale plots, but overall it still seemed in service of the adoption industry rather than family preservation.
