I got to meet Dickey a couple of times and he was a true hero of mine !!! I have the utmost respect for his talent and his passion !! The greatest writer of rock instrumentals no one is even close !!!
You look really sad, John. Understandably so. Hard to believe there’s only one original Allman Brothers Band member left.
Rest in peace, Mr. Betts.
Thank you John great tribute , Dickey was one of the greatest singer song writers of our generation a true icon he music is timeless and always will be. 🙏😞
Another great guitarist passes leaving the memories and great music he played with ABB .What a legend and great player thanks for the good times.
The Allman Bros and Dickie Betts still loved and admired over here in the UK. In fact just brought a brand new copy of 'Live At The Fillmore ' on Sunday. Brothers and sisters was my first Allman brothers album.
R I P Dickie.❤
Dicky was a phenomenal guitarist. I will miss him as well as the rest of the Allman brothers. Thanks for sharing.
The greatest guitar duo ever is reunited. RIP
Thanks John for a great tribute to a legend! As a a 66 yr old who loves blues, jazz rock, alt country, and prog who is a frequent concert goer I've never seen Dickie or the ABB but I plan on seeing their son's band. Just keep missing them. So glad the classic Jessica was included in the movie Field of Dreams. And thanks for the joy, Dickie. You were amazing and are finally with your bandmates.
I was lucky and was able to see the Allman Brothers in the 80’s. Dickey was a great musician. RIP.
😢so much respect for Mr. Dicky Betts. The songbook of my life. THANK YOU SO MUCH! You guys saved my life many times. ❤
Les Paul designed and introduced the greatest guitar the world has known, and Dickey Betts used it to its fullest...as did Duane Allman.
Great tribute saw Dickey several times. The Allman Brothers in August 1970, Watkins Glen, Highway Call tour. Thank you for this. May bands of angels welcome Dickey home.
In memory of Elizabeth Reed a masterpiece one of the greatest songs ever. Saw Dickey Betts in concert many times incredible player incredible songwriter. Original Allman Brothers America's greatest band ever IMO.
Dicky was a great guitarist, musician. He had a huge influence on my guitar playing at an early age listening to the Allman Brothers Band. Sad to see him go. RIP Dickey.
Just a good old boy who knew his stuff. One of the best.
Sadly another great leaves the building. Rock on, Dickey. You and Duane were great together. No time like the late '60s early '70s.
Peace.

What Dickey added to Melissa is immeasurable. Great lyrics and chord progression but his guitar fills brought the song to another level.
Im deeply hurt. I absolutely loved Dickey with the Allmans. I saw The Dickey Betts Band live in Portland Oregon. 2006. He played this song that Jerry Garcia taught him. It was a funky blues jam. He played so good!!
The ABB will always be the greatest Southern Rock Band in my opinion.
There will never ever be another band like the 1969-1973 ABB. Ever.
I remember where I was and who I was with the first time I heard the Allman Brothers live at the Fillmore East LP. I was a junior in High School and I became an immediate fan. RIP Dickey Betts.
Hello from Joe Nania to DICKEY BETTS up there in HEAVEN !
Will be listening to Jessica and little Martha forever!! Long time fan
My wife and I revered the Allman Brothers Band. In the early '70s at a club called Yogi's in Lima, Ohio, a great cover band, Canary, made us fans by performing the songs "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Trouble No More" every night in their setlist. Thanks for this fine tribute, John.
My dad believed ABB was the best band of all time and I never argued. I just treated it as fact. I cried last night unexpectedly when the news came up and my girlfriend didnt even ask what happened, she just let me be while I put on Eat A Peach and played a little guitar for some consolation.
Sorry to hear about Dickie Becks passing away. We lost one of the great ones. May he rest in peace.
🥲🎼🎵🎶🎸 I sure loved his music❤️👍😁
These legands of my Southern Rock Roots.
RIP
The song he wrote and named after his daughter Jessica is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written in Rock. Although Duane received most of the attention Mr Betts more than deserved any and all accolades thrown his way. One of the greatest ever during a period in Rock music that will never ever be surpassed. Rest in peace my friend
Dicky was top notch. Saw him a few times way back when, with the Brothers. They had nothing but incredible guitarist all along, since the inception of this dynamite band. Dwayne Allman, Dicky, Warren Haynes, and the great Derrick trucks. Man this band was phenomenal. Miss those days!!
Excuse my spelling, I bought Brothers and Sister's in 73, I was 14, I wore that album out man!😊😊
Thank you for this tribute. I grew up with Allman Brothers and recall the songs on the radio when I was in elementary school.
Thanks so much for this great tribute. Dickey Betts was absolutely the most important insipiration for me as I learned to play guitar, and I’ll always carry a piece of his music with me. I play a weekly set as the house band of a local bar on Wednesdays, and last night we played Liz Reed. It’s nice to know that as Dickey said goodbye to this world, his music keeps on playing. Ramble on Ramblin’ Man.
Definitely cut my teeth w\Allman Bros when I was 15. Saw Betts in KC when trouble was brewing in early 70's. The double drummers is what distinguished them and Fillmore East was excellent especially then. Knew about Duane before the accident...
Thank you Dickey Betts.
In addition to going to concert with entire band in August of 71,the unplugged show they did with purely acoustic guitars a favorite.
The Fayetteville N.C. concert in 1971 cost me $5.00
Dickey was awesome no matter who he was playing with.
If Dickie is important to somebody, he is IMPORTANT¡
Thank you for the expanded video.
His guitar was sooooo sweet. 😊
Dickey is the best.Thank you for doing this.. I never saw your channel such as now.And now that you're talking about the man the myth the legend my algorithm picked it up.
I saw him over 40 times.. With Allman and with great Southern. When Jerry died in 95 ..i started going on a b b tour.
My first cousin Steve went to Macon Ga in 71&72 with his band out of Mobile,Ala to hopefully sign with Capricorn records. And he struck.up a friendship with Dickie Betts! They even recorded a few songs in the studio, with Dickey. My cousin was a bass player! He also was in the studio when the Allman Brothers were recording Brothers and Sisters. He said one day Berry Oakley was almost too drunk to play on Rambling Man. My cousin thought he might of got the call to sit in on that one track??😊😊
As I sit and watch this tribute, I have been in the process of ripping all my media as means of downgrading all my material goods. To the point: I was just listening intently to the ABB. Lots of memories relative to this band while in the military. We would listen the ABB and other records while in the process of having some beers and talking our own lives back in the States. We were in Korea at the time in the early 70's. Dickey Betts you were one of the best.
Thanks for tribute 👏👏
R.I.P. DICKEY 🙏 SYMPATHY TO BETTS FAMILY 🙏
Thanks, that was a great tribute.
Dicky was a top ten guitarist!! And a regular on our turntable! Thanks John! RIP Mr Betts
The only band that I know that actually sat in with Johnny Carsons band when they did 2 of Dickeys instrumentals. True Gravity, and Kind of Bird. Doc Severinson killed it with the Brothers, and Johnny loved it. It is all on Utube. RIP Forrest Richard Betts.
He was much more than Southern rock. Liz Reed had a Jazz feel his instrumentals were awesome. He loved western swing that was played a lot in Texas. His tone was the best I ever heard.
Loved them from the first time I heard them. Dickey and Duane were a huge influence on me as a young guitar player. I had a chance to see the original band but couldn't make it (huge regret). Did see Dickey and Warren Haynes play and Warren and Derek.
Forty-three years from the first time I saw them until the last.
Best of Southern Rock RIP Mr Betts
I was blessed to be on the dickey betts great southern my hubby and i love him so amazing memories.see you again one day dickey i am sure david was smiling when he seen you at heavens door..i am sad.hugs to your children.
I was at closing night of the Fillmore East, I had friends that were there for that night and the night before and said that show was better, which was hard to believe. The J Geils band was also incredible, they were on a mission.
Thanks man ! I love your channel. Keep up the good work.👏👏👏👏👏🌞👍
RIP Dickey Betts. He influenced so many.
That 12: 59 version of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is perfect!!
Saw the Allmans a few times. Some I remember, some….no. Rutgers, Nassau Colosseum. Philly, Beacon theatre quit a few times. Great great stuff. My daughter Melissa is incredible.
He was the perfect complement to Duanne and Greg💔💔
RIP
Heard it early in the da, morning. Felt like an arrow in the heart. Jaimie is the last Mohican. The original band is disappearing. The music will be a testament that will always be.❤❤
Edit ..early day, jaimoe last comment had errors.nuch love to the family. Prayers & comfort.🦋
God bless his soul.
For those who never read the credits and just enjoy the music, suffice to say Dicky Betts was monumental in the genre called 'southern rock'. And nearly everyone alive has heard some of his music. Nuff said.
There was something special about putting the vinyl record on the turntable and waiting for the needle to hit that first note. Life at the Fillmore caught the essence of their live magic. Lightning in a bottle
I love the brothers grew up the road I’ve spent a fortune seeing them over the years I have been to a shit pot full of on concerts I would say I love them same as skinnard now it’s up toil to keep there music alive
Time Marches on..
I was watching the excellent production of “The Hatfields and McCoys” that came out a few years ago, and the character of “Bad Frank” Phillips reminded me so much of Dickey Betts, iʻm convinced he was used as inspiration by the actor that portrayed Bad Frank!
Nice commentary 🎉
Another (real)man done gone god bless his soul
0:00 I was born in 1960 and the Allman brothers have always been my favorite band.My older brother had all there' àlbums when I was growing up and learning guitar. So Listened to them everyday over and over. My favorite musicians were born in the late 40s and very early 50s. When Skynard came out I was not a big fan because they sounded like a cheap copy of the Allman brothers. But in time I grew to like them and many other SR bands and now I love Skynard. But Dickey Betts will always be my favorite guitarist of SR rest in peace Dickey Betts
You were 9 in 1969, I was 8. I know exactly what you are talking about. Dickie Betts and Duane Allman were huge, I felt sophisticated listening to them when everyone was listening to Skynyrd. I like them both now, but the Allman Bros Band stands alone with what they did.
Jamoe the last brother alive 😮
Yes, He the last original member, but the road goes on forever.
RIP Brothers!
That song the road is my only friend was awesome.
Thanks for the music Allman Brothers are back together. God Bless you buddy. 🎉
In gratitude
After Duane’s brief involvement with Derek and The Dominoes, and came back to his band waiting for him in Macon, one of the roadies asked him about the experience, Duane said “Eric Clapton ainʻt got nothing on Dickey Betts!” I just couldnʻt see Clapton pushing and inspiring Duane like Dickey, who most people at the time considered not much more than a back up guitarist. As big of an ABB fan as I am, i always thought Dickeyʻs absence during that last era of the group took away so much of the bandʻs “flavor”, thst even with two of the worldʻs best living guitarists, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, they just lacked that vital ingrediant that Dickey brought to the band.
The Allman Brothers band and Capricorn records were the biggest for the southern rock blues era
Dickey was one of those guys who lived the life he sang about. When you can do that, the genre becomes irrelevant, and the authenticity that created the music in the first place resonates with everybody who hears it Everybody from Robert Johnson and Leadbelly to Woody Guthrie or Hank Williams to the Allman Brothers to Kurt Cobain. there's no mistaking the real thing.
I wonder if the people who do the robot music will ever understand that? Can a guy like Dickey Betts ever be replaced by A.I.?
I’m not surprised when I ask, ‘you know the song Ramblin’ Man ? Response- ‘oh yeah, I love that song’ Do you know who wrote it, sang it and played his ass off ? Most frequent Response- ‘No’ I just shake my head in disappointment. But it’s always been that way in regards to pop music in America- Depending on where you live in America. DB was one of those guitar players that had a signature sound and was immediately recognizable. That is a rare thing. Great driving down the highway tunes - Ramblin man, High Falls, Jessica.
John, have you ever interviewed Derek Trucks and Susan Tedesky? They are the future of southern rock.
I think Dickie wrote Jessica, and won the ABB a Grammy. What a legacy Dickie leaves behind.
It sad when three bands with the original member as die the band Lynyrd Skynyrd now the Allman Brothers sad day
The Live version of Melissa. The one with 19 million views. If you haven’t seen that one. Check that one out.
It would be interesting, John, if you would ask Malcolm Bruce about the Allman Brothers Band. I say that, because Dickey Betts, in particular, was a fan of Cream, and obviously studied them well, as evidence by my all-time favourite guitar solo by Betts from 1968 when he was in the Second Coming, and they covered "I Feel Free": ruclips.net/video/mOgia7iq9yw/видео.html
Yeah Man," Duane, "GregOg", "'Dickey", & All , Though "Good/ Great Ole Boy's may have "Their Argument's Some, Think It All "Worked -Out" For Skme Of The" Best Damn Music " Made in "The Land". Yeah , Dig. God Rest "The Formation" Of The A.B.B.
Nice tribute! However, that said, It astounds me that while talking about Eat A Peach, ya don't mention one of Dickey's greatest compositions. Les Brers in A Minor is a masterpiece!
Run gypsy run
Has anyone said if he would be buried with the other band members?
I worked with him in the 80's and the Betts I knew was a curmudgeon and it was difficult to find anyone he gave a shit about.
The ABB never liked the term "Southern Rock" As Dickey put it...."we were a progressive band that just happened to be from the South". So why do people keep lumping them in with bands that they had virtually nothing in common with? It's disrespectful.
call me a weirdo if you will , but if i never hear Ramblin Man again it will be too soon . no , im a guy who favors the lesser heard lesser famous of the lot...like High Falls , one of the greatest instrumentals ever written...and Back Where It All Begins , and Pegasus....of course Blue Sky and Liz Reed is always there..
A colorful rock and roll life? What the hell does that mean? This guy doesn’t have a clue. I don’t know what’s sadder. Dickey’s passing away or this disrespectful video.
