Ren is the most exceptional artist of the last decade, even more. For me I fell in love 10 months ago and he is now my favourite artist of all time! Believe me when I say he can do EVERYTHING! He writes poetic masterpieces, shakespearian masterpieces, God tier story teller. Raps, sings in many different tones from operatic, ska, reggae, ballads, rock, pop, plays cello, piano, plays guitar (accoustic, electric, bass) beatbox and makes his own beats and production. Super intelligent and a wordsmith and suffers from Lyme disease which was wrongly misdiagnosed for many years. His message is very powerful and he's beyond incredible.

Love yes. Not a single performance. This video is made up of the 4 takes they did plus additional hand held shots. You only need look at the appearing / disappearing mic throughout the entire video to see it is clearly not one take.
Not being a one take does not detract from the song but it does detract from his actual one take videos.

    • @ucheehQ
      @ucheehQ 11 месяцев назад +4

@@CreativePhotoWS As has been explained in the past, the video we see is taken from several takes yes, but what we hear was all from a single take (the 4th one), except for the monologue at the end, which was cut from a different take.

    • @CreativePhotoWS
      @CreativePhotoWS 11 месяцев назад

@@ucheehQ they shot at least one take without a mic. They also shot at least one separate take for the hand held stand up ‘hope’ section. The audio may be one take. But that is the only thing that is.

This again. 😂 Look, it's 4 - continuous takes that were filmed. Each was the entire performance, the whole way through. Sam, the videographer, chose to use video from some of the other 1 takes in the final. So if we want to nit pick, sure, not a 1 take. It's 4 - 1 takes. 😂 For that matter, the concept of the video could never actually be a 1 take if we're nit picking, since there's 3 camera views, all that require a "cut" to be used. 🤷‍♂️😅

Exactly what I came to comment! I'm so grateful my life aligned with his, to be present to experience his talent is such a gift. "How to be me" shows his voice so beautifully, I'd love to hear your take on it! Other than that, you can't go wrong with any of his songs. Each one different, but all incredible. If you do the Tales of Jenny and Screech, make sure you do the "full" version, the trilogy in order. Don't read the lyrics first, just experience it. His storytelling is absolutely masterful. Like Shakespeare set to music. Always look for the lavalier mic, if he's wearing it, you're hearing him live!

Great reaction! I don't think Ren has given a clear explanation of how to interpret the song in every detail, rather he seem more interested in hearing other peoples interpretations. My take on it is that the first falsetto part is him trying out something new... it sounds more 'insecure' than the last part. Then 'dark Ren' sneaks up on him and presents all these doubts. The final falsetto part feels triumphant to me. I feel like he sings with abandon, having cast away those doubts.

    • @jontask9997
      @jontask9997 11 месяцев назад +2

I agree, but I feel the first part is him being ok for a few weeks or so, then 'that' part of Ren returns, and after a struggle, the same Ren wins and the jubilation can be heard. Brilliant anyway you look at it.

👏👏👏 Juliet, excellent analysis. I think a lot of reactors have also seen his final falsetto piece as a triumphalistic dance, that Hope has won through in that moment. Yes, there is a lot to unpack. You will continue to find interesting things and be further impressed with every viewing. The audio for this video was from a single live take, and the images compiled from the 4 live takes they did - remarkable.
If you are going down the Ren rabbit hole, then I can honestly say I haven't seen one video that I was disappointed with, even his rap music (which I've never been into) is different and imbued with his own style - everything he does is captivating. His talent seems to be boundless and for the most part he is self-taught. He writes all his own material, sings, raps, beat-boxes, plays guitar and piano, produces all his own tracks, and plays the leading role in conceptualising and making his videos, and his performances are outstanding.
Although he has only fairly recently "gone viral" on the back of the success of "Hi Ren" which came out just under a year ago, he started creating and performing music and videos as a teen. Sadly his career was interrupted by illness. He contracted Lyme disease but it was not diagnosed for several years in which time he suffered terrible symptoms both physical and mental. Some of his later work covers his health struggles and includes commentary on his "disappointment" with the medical system. Although his health has improved in recent years, he is still receiving stem cell therapy in Canada to help his body fully recover.
If you are interested in researching him, I would recommend looking at some of the interviews he has done with other RUclipsrs where he is always open and honest about his life, his musical journey and his struggles. Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice has recently done a two and a half hour long interview with him - you might need tea and biscuits for that one.
As mentioned, his work covers different genres, and his recently released album "Sick Boi" is mainly hip hop which is how he began as a youngster producing his own beats. He also has more traditional singing tracks and has done many covers while busking on the streets of Brighton (UK) either with friends or with the group he was in - The Big Push. He even has a cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff" 😉. As you have seen in "Hi Ren", he is a masterful story-teller and he has a trilogy of "songs" called the "The Tales of Jenny and Screech" which have been dubbed as 'bardcore' as he seemingly brings the song style of a medieval minstrel to the 21st century - has to be seen to be believed. He has another excellent trilogy called "The Money Game - Parts 1, 2 and 3" which outline Ren's views on the capitalist system and how it can be exploited by greed and the corrupting influence of selfish, individualistic beliefs and values. Part 3 has just recently been released and the video is just as epic (if not more so) than "Hi Ren".
As a vocal coach, I think his collaborations with Chinchilla will be of interest to you. They sing live on a couple of very emotive songs, "Chalk Outlines (LIVE)" and "How To Be Me (LIVE)" and it would be great to hear your analysis of both their voices and why they are so effective together.
Thanks for reacting to this one - I hope you are back from your trip to NZ feeling fully refreshed and revitalised and perhaps with a little souvenir from Frodo's house. 🙂

Hi! Great comment except that Ren got his stem cell treatments in 2016-17 ,which enabled him to heal about 50% and reignite his life and mysic career. In Canada this year, he is receiving specialized treatment for the autoimmunity and brain damage issues he was left with after a decade of non treatment of Lyme disease. He is getting heavy antibiotics now for co infections. He sill has MCAS ,which means he is highly allergic to almost all foods.
He has a huge catalogue but if you reacted to the first track of his #1 charted album, Sick Boi, the song Seven Sins, you would get a trip into his first day of psychosis and the struggles from that.

That last section where the lights go back to flickering and he rocks crazily from side to side playing the guitar and giving the Ooooh Ooh Ooh Oooooh Ooh Ouh! etc. is when he is truly living the "Dance" of both Dark and Light. At least that's how I see it.

This my first time here - nice reaction. Vocals being your thing, I think you should listen to a duet Ren does with an amazing singer called, Chinchilla. The song is, "Chalk Outline" - it's about the negative effect of anti-depressants!
The song was recorded live, and in one take, with no audio edits.
In my eyes, Ren can do little wrong. Another piece by him is a trilogy of songs call, "The Tale of Jenny and Screech". It's a modern day, almost "Shakespearian" tragedy set in London, done for the most part in the style of a medieval minstrel.

Common Stages of Reaction for the song 'Hi Ren' by Ren:
This looks creepy. Pig mask, ha.
    Guitar sounds nice. Nylon strings.
Oh he’s singing. Falsetto. I did not expect that. Will the whole song be like this?
Okay, he’s rapping now. Cool. He's good. Has anyone noticed he looks like Tommy Shelby?
    This guy is scary.
    Now he seems nice.
Oh I see what he’s doing.
This is interesting, it's like Eminem or Plan B.
This is intense. Time has lost its meaning.
The mean guy is a jerk.
    This is INTENSE!
Make it stop, I need to cry a bit.
I haven’t blinked or taken a breath in four minutes.
OMG THERE GOES THE 4TH WALL!!! How did he know what I was thinking?
YES! You tell him Ren. You are a genius!
Okay, scary just guy got way scarier. (You didn't know it was the devil, you would have dressed properly.)
The hopium has arrived and I am so here for it.
'Loosen the noose on the rope'.
    ...
HOLY SHITBALLS HE CAN SING!!! Damn, he can really sing.
OOO-OO-OO-OO-OO-... (your head bobs, tears in your eyes, you get it now)
I need some time to be still, wait there's more?
He's talking now and peering into my soul. I was not expecting to feel this much.
That was the longest nine minutes that has ever passed instantly.
(you sit in deafening silence as you contemplate existence)
"Good art makes you think about the art, great art makes you think about your life."

I think the problem with the "destructive voice" as you put it, is that it was once very helpful. As you learn more about Ren's backstory (Not mentioned in this song), you learn that he spent years being misdiagnosed for his chronic illnesses as "mental problems". It turns out he has Lyme disease and his chronic pain and fatigue were NOT just his mental state causing a trauma response in his body, but in fact an actual physical illness. And his "destructive voice" reinforced that he was right all along about these doctors, and they were in fact carelessly misdiagnosing him. So now he's stuck with this "what else is this voice right about" situation. And ultimately, this destructive voice is not destructive at all, it's safety. It's what keeps us from doing dangerous things, or trusting the wrong people. So we have to nurture it, and learn how to wield it, because without it, we would not be well off.

  • @anna9072
    @anna9072 11 месяцев назад +3

This is how I see it: at the beginning, he’s playing and singing - the oo-oo - that’s him, the core him. The lights are stable. Then the dark side shows up, challenging him, and the lights start to flicker. Throughout the first section, the body language of the hopeful Ren is defensive, leaning back, hunching, turning his eyes away. The dark side manifests with the flickering lights and a very aggressive body posture, very “in your face”. And as the “hopeful Ren” continues to resist the dark side’s “guidance”, it becomes more and more aggressive. And the more “hopeful Ren” fights back the more hostile and aggressive the dark side becomes, until he finally declares that he is “eternal, immortal”, that basically, resistance is futile. Then, when “hopeful Ren” comes back, he is no longer defensive, his voice is calmer and more powerful, asserts his own immortality in eternal opposition to the dark - “we’re a coin with two different sides”. Then he sings again, the same oo-oo as in the beginning, but this time the lights are flashing - the leit-motif of the dark side. This does not mean that the dark side has won, it means that he has come to terms with it, accepting it as an integral part of himself, but a part that he is, ultimately, in control of. Anyway, that’s my analysis.

You nailed it! Great editing. In a recent interview, Ren said he originally wrote this song where he died at the end. He's some interesting interviews this year. This is the first video of yours that I've come across, but seeing as you teach singing, I assume you would be interested in the interviews by Elisabeth Zarhoff from the Charismatic Voice, and Chris Liepe too.
Ren has some interesting performance art type pieces, notably: the Tale of Jenny and Screech (trilogy- watch the full 13 minute video to see them together in the right order); Money Game part 1 and part 3 (part 2 is a lyric video, also excellent); How to be me/Chalk Outlines live videos with Chinchilla. He genre hops with ease and sings/raps/beatboxes/plays multiple instruments.

The unfortunate, fortunate thing about Ren is that he's a musical polyglot. You never really know what to expect with each song other than lyrical goodness.
His recently released album made it to number one on the UK charts which is shockingly rare for an independent artist. And the album is mostly hip hop rap based. The first track on the album is Seven Sins and somewhat describes his horrid physical and emotional pain due to medical misdiagnosis. The opening verse is in his native Welsh.
His collaboration with Sam Tompkins on an early song, Blind Eyed went viral when their busking session was posted online. It's worth a look.
He more recently collaborated with other busking friends and they formed a band The Big Push. Any of the performances where he's wearing the red braces are extremely well produced and worth viewing.
Yes, you are right that Ren tackles difficult issues; issues that aren't chart toppers, but are important. His video Suic*de is unbelievably great and emotional.
Thank you for being open to unusual music. We are fortunate to have artists like Ren.

Ren isn't just a songwriter but rather a Performance Art Master who blends music and character acting from all the styles over the last 500 years and makes it modern and relatable to all generations even if normally you may not be a fan of whatever genre he is currently performing. While most good Performers can envoke some emotions in their audience, Ren is an Emotion Master who has control of all of them, From the Feel Good Vibes of Bongo Bong, to the Rebellion of Illist Of Our Time, to the Tragedy of Jenny and Screech, to the Mind Bending Rap Flow of Losing It, and the Internal Psych War of Hi Ren, Ren has it All! The Ren Rabbit Hole is Deep and Powerful! Get Ready for the Ride of your Life!

Welcome to the Ren rabbithole! He is one of the most unique and talented performers on YT. I suggest the Tale of Jenny and Screech, which I describe as a modern day troubadour singing a tragic story! My fav video is Animal Flow, a huge nod to the book Animal Farm.

Excellent analysis. One of the best I've seen. When I first watched "Hi Ren", I thought the non-lyrical singing ("ooh-ooh-ooh...") was like a bird (symbolic/spirit animal) singing to reassure himself as he flew through the storms of life/mental health; but I like your take better. Just discovered your channel, and have liked all that I've watched so far. Upbeat and charismatic personality, fun to watch. Liked & subscribed.

Even though Ren is not “new” in the novice sense of the word he’s really blown up since the release of Hi Ren last December. He has consistently blown me away since I found him ( or Hi Ren found me) back in February. He is an artist, a performer; he is brilliant and fearless ; he has the ability to expose his vulnerabilities and turn them into strength. I love this young man and everything he has brought to this community of souls, like Ren, many tattered and torn, broken and beat- still struggling , maybe hopeful, maybe not yet. Aside from his intelligence he is equally, if not greater, in his EQ , or emotional “IQ”.
A materclass in storytelling, lyricism, poetry, humanity.

called The Big Push. They have quite a catalog of their group songs together on her also. Ren is a once in a lifetime singer, songwriter, musician and word smith. II feel the falsetto section at the begining is a chaotic, unbalanced, tormented with purposefully placed off keys, the way he is play the guitar is all a refection of his condition.....at the end the mirroring final falsetto section is a little more triumphant combined with the same emotional melody that seems to reflect a slightly more optimistic outlook
Ren has many facets, many more highlights to come if you dare dive down the rabbit hole......also check out his earlier material when he plays in the band "The Big Push"

    • @5353Jumper

I see the beginning is immature. Like a 16 year old self taught musician writing a little ditty.
Then his inner critic comes in.
Then he tries to fight the inner critic and it becomes an inner demon.
Then he matures and finds inner strength, and accepts his inner critic as part of his humanity.
Then the mature adult plays the same ditty, but with depth, layers, confidence and complexity.

@@5353Jumper Ren's music can be so provoking, generating many different responses, the truly wonderful thing is that his music has room for different interpretations and that so many of his pieces draw out these emotional conections and leave us with deep questions ...... it is what elevates his music into higher form of inspirational art

My interpretation of the two ooh ooh sections is also of the eternal dance. However, the first one is much more fearful whereas the second one seems much more celebratory following the victorious finale that followed the Devil unveiling himself.
I also like the comparison to Mozart with the oohing. I wonder how much Ren is influenced by him.
And Ren being wheeled in in a wheelchair reminds me so much of Salieri in Amadeus. The setting of the insane asylum and the character having been possessed by the Devil, trying to defeat the genius bestowed on Mozart by God.
Hopefully you continue to delve into the unmatched genius that is Ren!

Yeh, first thought on seeing the intro, was Green Day 'Basket Case'.
Actually thought the first time he used falsetto it was very tentative & timid, almost like a mouse peeking out - then along comes his darker side to knock down his efforts.
And who else knows your true core ambitions or motives better than yourself and so can weaponise them to undermine your creativity so totally?
After dark Ren's crescendoing nuclear attack is over, you see this tiny mote of a seed that survived & then blossoms gaining confidence & strength.
Then the second time he uses falsetto, it's more assured, even joyous & with the brakes fully released and so it came across like he had integrated his creative side with his inner critic in an 'eternal dance' with lights flickering but him belting it out with full abandon - amazing performance.
Check out 'Crutch' from some years back and 'Money Game' - he's so versatile it won't really matter what you listen to - but the more you find out about his story, the more his songs will resonate.

I read it as an (over) curated Ren and the (excised and suppressed) chaotic parts disapproved of by his doctors, switching more to chaotic-despair and hope as a pair... then coming together as a Ren whole if battered and damaged... but at peace with himself and able to do more as a unified whole than Ren at war.
Both are destructive and limiting in their own ways at the start. See Chalk Outlines (Live) for context on that...

This performance couldn't capture mental struggle any better. Even the end, though it would be nice to have the hopeful side win, it was so true
to reality that when he breaks into the operatic voice again, the battle continues, as it will always inside of us. Just as he says in the spoken word
monolog at the end. It's not a battle to be won, it's a dance. I hope you continue to look at other songs and videos Ren does. He has so many layers.

Hope you do more reactions for Ren.. This was the first song I heard from Ren back when it came out. I went down that Ren Rabbit hole finding everything he has made. Then I been keeping up with all his music. I have not only watched all his videos, I have watched just about every reaction video to all of his songs.. Ya, I know sounds a bit obsessive :D But Ren really is that powerful of a singer, and his message moves so many people, and I enjoy watching all kinds of people reacting to him. I love seeing how it moved them. Reactors ask their viewers what should I listen to next from Ren.. Its hard to point to any one one song. You as a vocal coach, I try to think of songs where he doesnt use so much of his bardsong voice, but more of a singing style voice. Chalk Outlines I would say should be a first one to see his voice, and Chinchilla, a female singer who sings with him. He did another song with his bad The Big Push doing a cover of I Shot the Sheriff, in that song his voice has that Jamacain sound to it. There are just so many songs.. Ya, go down that Rabbit hole please. :D

Interesting take on the yodel type voice. I took the high energy and unexpectedness of that section as sort of being the chaos of life. Then the two sides battle. Easy gets a monologue, and then there's the vocalization again. I took the second one as more triumphant, but still chaos. Sort of showing that the battle does continue. Kind of like a celebration of "I won this round, but it goes on."
