I like these, good sound and they last awhile if you care for and clean them. I’m a big fan of skullcandy inkd but have a pair of these that came with my iPhone 7 and use them on and off especially when out bike riding. It’s nice not having to worry about the dongle, but really I never minded the dongle they are cheap and you can even use them on older iPhones if your headphone jack is screwed up

Will you try to put these new ones into one of the old plastic cases and see if it fits? I may keep my old cases and just toss the old headphones.

The lightning audio protocol has been around since iOS 8. No idea why it wouldn't work with previous versions.
