The side hole tip was very useful! I bought some earpods at a shop to replace my half-broken ones and while the aesthetic / slight sound differences made me suspicious, I wondered if it might just be a shitty new model. However, covering up the side hole has no effect on the new (fake) ones, whereas my old earbuds immediately lose bass. Gamechanger!

Sadly there is more than one type of fake, so some do have the writing on the cable and many fakes do not have the reversed Apple logo. The magnetic lightening connector and blocking the bass ports are new to me, so I am happy to learn that.

Just opened up a box of what turned out to be fake Earpods with a 3.5mm jack. :( So not exactly the same model as the one you show here. But you can tell they are made of cheap plastic with sharp edges instead of the smooth and rounded feel on the originals. The remote worked on mine. The cables getting creased and the trick of covering the slit on the pods to check the base where exactly as you described. And yea the sound was of course worse then on the originals.
I have an apple earpod , and I was looking at all the videos to confirm fake or copy, the most satisfying part was the vertical hole point and the California Vietnam point. but still crackles for bass songs at high volume. so still on confusion
