Just a suggestion: heating up the tang so you can have a good fit with the handle is a great idea! But you can’t do that with hard word
That won’t work and you risk to ruin the wood

Tip for when opening gas bottles .
Only open half turn , that way in an emergency you only need a half turn to shut it off .
