    It’s even better if you start from the back side. That way the tap is lined up with good threads. When it hits the bad threads it just fixes them, rather than cutting new threads all the way.

      if you start from the back of a left crank, would you still need to use a left tap?

    Instead of using WD-40, use engine oil or grease and make sure that the pedal is secured and not moving, you do not want to cross thread it :)
