of course everyone in know indulges n fluff dessert/ambrosia and not just during the holidays but all year its inexpensive to make and can be made dozens of ways and different flavors
It’s been around since the 50lbs 60s, before we ever were born, it was popular since, my childhood in the 70s as well, it definitely wasn’t something that came out in the 80s!
I ate a lot of ambrosia salad as a teen in the 1970's. I've eaten less each decade since then, till now when I can't recall the last time I ate any, but still have a fond memory of it. The problem with this dish isn't the canned fruit or coconut but the use of marshmallow and cool-whip.
My Sister-in-law, from a Southern family, introduced me to Ambrosia during holiday meals. I'm not particularly fond of the individual ingredients but ... together? They sent me swooning. Every time. I can't explain it. Leftover turkey, stuffing, green bean salad? No thanks! Send me home with the rest of that Ambrosia!
I used to bring ambrosia salad to grad school potlucks in the early 1980s. It was one of the easiest party dishes to throw together with the limited kitchen facilities of a college dorm.
Imagine an ambrosia salad, but instead of heavy cream, canned oranges, and dried coconut bits that get stuck between teeth, it's whipped coconut cream covering fresh dragonfruit, lychee, rambutan, and ripe fuyu persimmons.
@@sonyafox3271 The whole idea is creamy coconut flavor and colorful tropical fruit. Like the video says, the old recipe has lost its original context as a celebration of previously hard-to-find ingredients. Calling people's ideas gross doesn't make your palette any nicer.
Ambrosia Salad is a refreshing dessert during summer. You can use Condensed milk, Nestle Cream if you don't like Whipped Cream. Besides canned fruits, you can add real fruits like grapes, strawberries and diced apples. You can make it exotic by adding tropical ingredients like coconut gel and coconut palm fruits. You can even add finely crushed salted cashews to have a special taste. You need to drain the canned fruits ideally overnight to remove the water.
I take out the pineapple, but add bananas and raising. Forget cool whip, use real whip cream, mandarin oranges, bananas, grapes, mini marshmallows, the multi flavored ones and raisins
I remember having it for the first time. I was confused why desert was being served early and was told it was considered a side like coleslaw or mash potatoes. Still rather have it as a desert. Either way it’s good.
Nope, it was meant to be a side dish, not a dessert! In fact at steakhouses and buffets you can get it by the salad area,it’s fruit and it’s actually meant to be eaten along with your salad before you eat your actual meal!
Yes, I still eat Ambrosia. I make it and sometimes buy it at the supermarket deli. Whenever I make it for pot luck, people love it. Long live Ambrosia!!! 🍊🍒🥥 🍍 If you like Ambrosia, I recommend you try Cranberry Fluff Salad.
Me to and, when, I would buy it in the deli when, I didn’t have a lot of time to make it through the week, I’d at least have a little in the fridge for a quick healthy snack! I was sad to see when, our Kroger Deli stopped carrying it!
@@sonyafox3271 I had an old Better Homes and Gardens cookbook with a recipe for a Waldorf Jello Mold where you suspended chopped apples, celery, and walnuts in lemon Jello. IIRC I used apple juice instead of water to make the Jello. It was delicious!
i call it watergate salad and stil make it. cool whip..pineapples..crushed pecans...marhsmallows ...and jello instant mix(green) for coloring. Pour pineapples in last to mix the jello mix well.
I’ll never eat this again with any dairy in it cause it causes major gastrointestinal upset. You’re not supposed to eat pineapple with dairy -google it people!
I make Waldorf Salad. Its healthier and really tastes great. Use good quality ingredients, Honeycrisp apples, golden raisins, less celery, toasted pecans for best results. Original ambrosia, fresh sliced oranges, sweetened coconut, topped with maraschino cherries, toasted pecans. What is shown is disgusting.
Do you still eat ambrosia salad?
I miss eating ambrosia salad at Thanksgiving. We always had a version of it on the Thanksgiving table.
Yes!

Yesssss
I still love it!! Mom makes it yummy!!
I loved ambrosia. Every so often, someone makes this at an event I'm at, and it just brings me back to my childhood in the 80's.

You know you’re in America when people start putting whipped cream on their “salad”
Likewise, you know you’re in Europe when people start putting meat in their “pies”

But, we have Molly Yeh, and, we now have cookie and candy salad, although, I never have eaten either one!
Yup -pineapples with dairy cause major gastrointestinal upset.

It isn’t made that way and, it’s not meant to so, why would you want to eat it that way, gross!

It's not ambrosia, but it sounds delicious.

Near Thanksgiving time, Publix grocery stores have 'Publix Deli Marshmallow Delight' which is similar.
My mom always made it for holidays. I just made it for Christmas. Love it. I will make it for every Christmas and Thanksgiving and maybe Easter.
I don't think I have ever tried ambrosia salad before. I would be willing to try it just to say that I have had it.
Just remember you’re not supposed to eat pineapple and dairy together

Ambrosia salad and Waldorf salad are two of the best things ever invented. YUM!!!!
Waldorf Salad is much different and has no cool whip in it, it’s a mayonnaise based salad, after so, long, I was over it!

I love both!

The party cheese salad was probably some people's gateway to ambrosia salad, I wouldn't be too surprised if it scared people away
I still make it at Christmas!
We just made a cherry one (cherry fluff) Saturday 😅
I’ve never heard of watergate safe but when I was growing up my mom made watergate cake/cupcakes for me and my sister
Make it once a year for Christmas, we love it!
I do not like it because it is made with shredded coconut and the only way I like that is in Mounds and Almond Joy candy bars.
I always make it on Thanksgiving 😋
I love ambrosia salad ❤

It's my husband's favorite.
If I seen this on a buffet I think I would try 1 bite.
Cool Hwhip.
I like ambrosia salad ^.^
I love ambrosia ❤
Because it's gross!
Publix sells it, it’s really food
We call it fruit mellow salad in Los Angeles
I like ambrosia salad
Note to self: don’t serve Ambrosia Salad to Jacques Pepin.
Just sugar.

Speak for yourself, I love it.
It sounds disgusting. I can see why.
I love that but is it really good for you?
