    It's never going to happen. I grew up in the Cold War era and spent most of my child hood through the 1960s and 1970s and even my young adult hood of the 1980s listening to this same nonsense about USSR, or what we now call Russia.
    We had duck and cover drills in grade school to prepare us for attacks, and everyone bragged of their bomb shelters. All because the news warned us an attack was imminent.
    The news did exactly what it wanted; instill fear and earn viewers. And it worked. It also earned customers for those who sold bomb shelters. It also guaranteed budget funding for the Civil Defense.
    Bottom line was the USSR didn't want a nuclear war any more than we did. No country wants it. Nuclear war is messy, and an unprovoked attack is suicide.
    Don't live your life in fear of a nuclear attack. You'll more likely die of a lightening strike than a nuclear attack.

    North Korea has been preparing for nuclear possession much longer than we thought. North Korea is believed to have thought of nuclear possession for the first time back to the Korean War. On November 30, 1950, Truman announced that he was "actively considering the use of all weapons, including nuclear weapons, to deter communist aggression on the Korean Peninsula." It was the day after MacArthur suggested bombing Manchuria. North Korea called the threat of U.S. nuclear use blackmail and denounced the unfairness of the nuclear threat. The fear of nuclear weapons felt by the North's leadership at this time would have been the first motivation to drive nuclear ownership for self-defense. The establishment of a nuclear weapons defense unit under the Ministry of People's Armed Forces in 1954 illustrates the fear felt by North Korea.
    Even after the ceasefire, the United States continued to provoke North Korea's fears by mentioning the possibility of using nuclear weapons on January 2, 1955 by Radford Chorus Chairman and President Eisenhower's possible use of tactical nuclear weapons. And in 1955, it announced that it would deploy a long-range nuclear reactor on the Korean Peninsula and actually deploy tactical nuclear weapons. North Korea established the Atomic and Nuclear Physics Laboratory in April 55 and signed the Nuclear Research Agreement and the Nuclear Energy Agreement with the Soviet Union in 1956. Naturally, the ostensible purpose was peaceful use.
    The incident that led Kim Il-sung, who was most loyal to the Soviet Union during liberation, to turn to the anti-Soviet subject line in 1962. It is the Cuban Missile Crisis. Watching the North withdraw its missiles from Cuba in negotiations with the United States, North Korea must have felt that the Soviet Union would not be their perfect protector. Therefore, Kim Il-sung later adopted the four major military lines to promote self-defense and put the Juche ideology as his governing ideology. It is obvious that nuclear possession was promoted as a means of self-defense. The atmosphere of Detent due to Nixon's visit to China and the withdrawal of the U.S. 7th Division are exactly the same as the case of Park Chung-hee, who felt a sense of security crisis and attempted to develop nuclear weapons and missiles.

      I don’t think that would be the case, but it will all depends on the nature of the relationship with America and the west leading up the o that. Meaning if the US get some other hardliners who’d keep on pushing him and imposing sanctions on him he’d respond with a similar rhetoric, as we have seen in the Trump era. However China neighbours NK and is a close friend to them, China is gradually replacing the USA as the supreme superpower in the world, and they’re doing it with ease and patience. So the last think they’d want is their friend (NK) to start a deadly fight with the US at this point. That’s why China (as most countries) will oppose and try to deter such scenario. Besides Kim himself is not that stupid and he knows what extreme consequences such move will bring to his people and global stability, at least from a moral point of view.

    As of 2017, THAAD (Terminal high altitude area defense) missiles had a success rate of 55%. So, your antimissile salvo, statistically, would need to include a mere two missiles.
    But, it doesn't end there. MIM-104C Pac 3 Patriots can intercept during the terminal phase, possibly during the boost phase as well if they are close enough. This is in addition to SM-3s launched from both Aegis Ashore installations and most cruisers in the USN.
    The "44 interceptors" refer to ground based midcourse defense missiles. Each one if equipped with an exoatmospheric kill vehicle, essentially a massive, glorified, guided bullet that destroys the incoming missile by simply colliding with it.
    And this is before we get into any "desperate," spur of the moment ideas such as detonating nukes of our own at high altitude, thereby frying the sensitive electronics a warhead needs to detonate.
    Never mind anything that's still classified.

      That’s not how the probability math works out. You don’t just add the two 55% values to get 110%, you have to shave off 45% and then take 55% of that away again. So let’s say they have a hit rate of 50%, just to make the math easier. You’d need to fire two missiles to get the hit rate to 75%, three to get it to 87.5%, four to get it to 93.75%, five to get it to 96.875%, etc. You quickly move into the land of diminishing returns and you’ll just have to accept a roughly 10% chance that a given missile will get through, even when you fire multiple interceptors. North Korea isn’t going to just fire one missile either so that 10% probability of one getting through is now not 10% anymore. You also have to consider that the US might want to save some interceptors to defend against other attacks from other countries so they probably wouldn’t use all of them at once.
      We’re not as safe as you think we are.

    That's an incredibly complex question which no one responding can answer. (Those in the know don't talk; those who talk don't know). The whole world is watching so if we obliterated N. Korea and their missile hit the ocean or was defective or even a decoy, we'd be held up as the aggressor. Besides, a single effort aimed at Japan or the US would be brought down. If somehow they struck Tokyo or the continental US our response is unknowable. A full nuclear exchange is virtually impossible as no one would favor it...

  • @Mechaneer
    @Mechaneer Год назад

    I have a question I'm sure others have wondered about. When countries like North Korea do their missile tests, almost hitting other countries such as Japan, how do we know that the missile was not just a test? How do we or anyone else that might be in danger know to not waste our missile defense systems when attack systems are fully tested? There could be some kind of communication about it between governments shortly before the test, which sounds weird when we're talking about non-allied nations, but I guess its possible.. However, even if that were the case, every nation would still need to be able to distinguish between tests and legitimate threats at a moments notice to avoid being duped in the event of a legitimate attack where it was represented to be just a test by the country launching beforehand. I'm really curious about this, and no one talks about this even though I'm sure it is a significant and important concern in every military that has the capacity to defend itself against such threats.
