J. Cole isn't the first rapper you think of when it comes to police raids but it happened to him on March 18, 2016. While the MC and his Dreamville Records squad was down in Austin, Texas for the annual SXSW Music Festival, his North Carolina studio was being raided by armed SWAT team members. The incident served as the inspiration for his song "Neighbors," from his 2016 album, 4 Your Eyez Only. The raid, which was captured on camera, shows 12 SWAT team members approaching the house and breaking through the door, with one of the officers disarming the camera that was recording the fiasco. Going off of a false tip by a neighbor who believed Cole and friends were growing marijuana or using the house as a drug den, the officers jumped the gun, resulting in one of the best rap songs of the past year.

I am old school. Hip Hop started while I was in high school. Therefore, I am into lyricists. This brother can "spit." I have been a fan for a while and this track is so dope (no pun intended).
I'm in SC. Over the years, I've asked my black friends who their favorite rapper is. J Cole is consistently in the top 3. I've always liked him, but this story crystallized it for me.
I remember being super obsessed with this song when it came out. Not only the song, but the video as well. It was so aesthetically pleasing, filled with vibrancy, saturation, and color. Also to mention the creativity output and Forbidden Fruit being reversed. A production move I thought was done exceptionally well.👌🏾To this day, Neighbors is still one of my favorite J Cole songs.
This track, this bass, this beat.... Man, the amount of chill it gives me.. The relaxation i have while i listen to this... Is the same as a damn day of hard work and making money, damn!
