This song will persist for decades as an American standard like so many songs written by anonymous genius musicians and famous ones alike. I think of Yeats and Frost when I hear this song - not sure why - so much austere sincerity.
A friend and i were talking about the houses we grew up in, hers had just gone up for sale and when this song came on this morning, the beginning lyrics almost made me want to turn it off because they are so lonely. But when he got to the part where he posits that, it was the love that made those houses special, and they are only houses. This is just a song, ;)
The man can write crap and he still moves me to an emotional quagmire or high or whatever he wants to send me. To say he is a "Lyricist" or a "musician" is the equivalent of saying Da Vinci was a "draftsman." Keep writing and singing my friend, you bring new life where it was fading fast.
Officially he was called Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci. Leonardo, son of mr. Piero from Vinci. That is how his grandfather included him in the book of registration of his family. Vinci was a little village he was born, or close by this village.
once every few years or so I pop in to remind you kids that this is the goods.
The most adorable song about an abandoned house where nobody lives. Cheerful.
I don't drink or cry anymore but I used to do both when I listened to this song.
You can cry, no need to drink...I´m doing both, not a good thing.
I drink way too often (just got my third beer at 8 am) and sometimes cry.
I’m glad I didn’t know this song existed when I drank.

This song has made me cry more than any other song ever written, except for maybe Oops I did it again.

Just a bit picky comment: Leonardo is just Leonardo. Da Vince isn't his last name. But I digress. Tom waits is a genius just like Leonardo.
