Watching this brings back a flood of memories, and they aren't good. I did my apprenticeship with Jaguar in the early 80s, the fuel injected XJ6 (known locally as the Series 3) was a great improvement over the earlier models fitted with AUD choke units. These destroyed many an engine with the incessant flooding and black smoke belching from the exhaust, what were Jaguar thinking to fit such rubbish to their cars! Then there were the oil leaks (where the cure was only temporary), constant automatic gearbox failures (we sometimes overhauled two to three BW gearboxes per week), power steering issues, blown head gaskets, electrical issues, fuel pumps etc. Nice to drive, but that's about it.
Yes the series 2 was the low point. Maintain these sixes properly though and they’re pretty reliable. I don’t drive this one as often as I’d like, it really needs a good tune-up.
Hello mate, these are beautiful cars. I'v got a couple of them. I safed them from the scrap man. I'm tempted with mine to rip out all the lucas stuf, replacing it with holly or edelbrook goodies. I'll let you know how i get on. Also check out lanoguard underbody treatment. Tatar for a bit😊
My money is on throttle position sensor. It’s surging because there’s a cut off when the idle gets to 1500 rpm it cuts the fuel. If the tps doesn’t register your throttle input it thinks the idle is over 1500 and cuts the injectors. Let’s see if I’m right!
We’ve talked about that as well. A lot of these issues boil around the coolant temp sensor as the car is doing this from cold, but I’m shying away from that as the car is doing this intermittently. I’ll know more this week.

Excellent video! Love the s3 xj’s
Thank you! They’re beautiful cars.

Good job in saving them! I agree, one of the most beautiful saloon cars ever made.

@@AutoAtlantica short the cts and it thinks it’s fully warm so rules it out. Or confirms it.
I am in a similar situation where I have to leave my xj6 s3 outside. What car cover do you use on yours? Thanks in advance!
It’s this relatively inexpensive Amazon cover, but it’s a thick, hard-wearing material and fits the series 3 like a glove. a.co/d/025mWug0
@@AutoAtlantica thanks, ordered one for myself
@@OldCarStuff97 awesome! I’ve been very impressed with mine.
