  • It has been a while, but here is another unboxing type video.
    I backed a project on Kickstarter some time ago, and it finally arrived. It's The Book by Timur, and its purpose is to jump-start society after an apocalyptic event. I like books like this, as well as artbooks and the like so I was interested enough to put some money into it.
    The pledge level I selected included The Book itself, a digital copy, a gift box, A1 sized poster, and a bookmark. It also came with some stickers. I haven't received my slipcase or playing cards yet, unfortunately. Those were add-ons, so they'll probably ship later, assuming they didn't forget to send this to me.
    It is quite extensive, this book. Fairly large too. It doesn't go too in-depth and is only intended as a (mostly serious) overview. A starting point and reference book, basically. I think the idea is that once it is known to be possible and you're pointed in the right direction, it'd be up to the reader to figure out how to actually make it a reality. This is of course largely for fun, and something to add to a book collection.
    I think there is supposed to be a primer on basic mathematics somewhere in it, but I couldn't find it in my brief flip-through.

    I would have LOVED this as a kid.. you have no idea (or maybe you do). I'm in my 30s and was raised very poor and yet was born a "nerd" or whatever you want to call it.. not the stereotype, im athletic and stuff too, what I mean is that I've always been extremely curious about the world I live in and craved science, philosophy, engineering, literature, and so on.. but I had very limited access and internet wasn't really common place, especially not where I'm from in the Appalachian mountains. I would try sooo hard at night to try to pick up PBS on my 13" CRT TV so I could watch Nova Science Now and other educational programming, as well as Austin City Limits. I digress..
    I saw an ad for this book on RUclips and it's a very very rare example (maybe the only one in memory) of an advertisement that I actually clicked on and plan on buying. I'm going to buy a copy for one of my nieces who is alot like me in her love for the arts and science. Her mom and dad (my bro) even says she's like a female version of me. I can't wait.

    Something like 5-10 years back there had been a startup organization that was planning on making a Big Box kit to rebuild civilization with that contained mech tech for the minor manufacturing of more complex things that was being presented as something that could be air dropped in more remote or isolated population places in response to un/natural disasters or other calamity and was said to have manuals and books like this. I wonder if they were affiliated with eachother... and I wonder what ever became of that project... hmmm wish I could remember the name.

      Seems unlikely that they're associated, but the idea is well-intentioned. Not really sure how sensible it would have been though. Wouldn't it have been easier to just bring over the materials and preferably an expert to get it started and teach locals instead? I get that it's for isolated areas, so I suppose it had a chance of being useful that way.

    “yeah…ball”
    On a serious note, that book doesn’t seem like much of a “guide”. More like a picture book with some info added.
    I didn’t read it but it section on dentistry was only a couple paragraphs. No way that covers even the basics.

      It really doesn't. It's more....entertainment, I guess. If I remember correctly, a lot of the designs had a steampunk and/or impractical aesthetic. It's an art book, more than anything.
      There are definitely more practical guides out there, I'm sure.

    Wow. I'm making one of these for personal use, I think I'll just buy this instead and make a separate thing for what is not included and what I think is relevant.
    Edit: Eh. I changed my mind, After seeing the whole thing that book is pretty useless.
    Ceramics, textiles, resource identification, basic tooling, when to plant, when to harvest, farming methods in general.
    Maybe those pages were skipped over, IDK.
    The art style is delusional at best.
    I think I'll stick to making mine and keep it in the family.

    • @ThatSoddingGamer
      @ThatSoddingGamer  Год назад +1

      Yeah, it's not exactly in-depth, and as I mention in the video there doesn't seem to be an exploded view (that's the term I couldn't remember) of the components, and the designs were all steampunk inspired, rather than being simple efficiency. It would be awesome if someone came out with a multi-volume set, each covering separate topics, though I guess you can already just buy individual books on each subject and get the same result. Still, it would be nice to have a set of highly detailed primers that are intended to be used by complete novices.
      TBH, when I backed it I was expecting it to go a bit more in-depth, but I still like it anyway, even if it's not exactly the most practical guide.

      @@ThatSoddingGamer indeed, if one did go through a complete and hard reset it could take centuries to rebuild back to a bronze age society without proper step by step directions.
      Take the consistent mass production of firearm barrels for instance.
      First you would need a lathe but in order to get one you would need hundreds of pounds of precision cast steel which means you would need something like a blast furnace and before you can have a blast furnace you would need a more primitive foundery to forge the tooling you need, but in order to make the foundery you would have to already of Forged tooling just to aquire the resources.
      It's a real pain in the butt, that's why most pre automation societies result to resource raiding and slave taking to chop years off the labor process. But it may be politically incorrect to state that now a days.

    • @ThatSoddingGamer
      @ThatSoddingGamer  Год назад +2

      @@joshuayow4653 Well, it's not politically incorrect to point out what happened, historically. It WOULD be pretty awful however, if one said "It was a good thing." or something to that effect.
      It wasn't necessary to develop, but it was easier for some societies to go that route as a shortcut, and a 'you keep what you can take from the people we tell you to attack' was a useful incentive for the leadership to offer to their rank and file, and a way to drastically reduce (or even eliminate) pay for their conscripts and part-time soldiers/fighters.
      It could also hold a society back just as easily though. One needs only to point out the confederate states of the USA. Instead of modernizing, which was something they could do (and indeed, ended up doing anyway, after they lost), they kept to their slave labour system and fought to keep it (it wasn't the only reason for the fighting, but it was a motive).

    • @joshuayow4653
      @joshuayow4653 Год назад +1

      @@ThatSoddingGamer well to clarify I'm not advocating for slavery I'm just saying during such a scenario most societies would quickly devolve to such methods as the average persons intellectual and problem solving skills aren't adept enough for complex and civil society.
      It simply is what It is.

      Nope. I'm quite sure that when we die, we die. There is no evidence to the contrary, and I'm not delusional enough to think there is some sort of higher power that would grant a second chance life, especially not to a dumbass.
      Also, the book is a nice collectors piece but isn't really detailed enough to provide more than some good ideas for actual capable people, which admittedly has some merit.
