It feels like it protects us at first but ironically it always leads to destruction.. The only solution I’ve found is this: for each person to accept their suffering, deny themselves, and carry their own cross.. and that’s how we would actually save the world

Mr. Jordan's profound understanding, shaped by his vast experience and knowledge, undoubtedly surpasses mine. Surprisingly, thoughts I harbored privately for 15 years, often dismissed as products of a damaged mind, were not only echoed by him but substantiated with scientific evidence. What brings me joy is his extensive fan base, united in learning and agreement. As J.B.P advocates, courage lies in expressing one's thoughts openly. Imagine a world where everyone fearlessly engages in discussions about ideologies, religions, or traditions. Thank you, Mr. Jordan, for inspiring such bravery.

Interesting conclusion. Unfortunately, JP has done a number of videos and speeches that support the Christian worldview. With that one has also had to accept the concept of god. As smart and "wise" as he may appear, Peterson completely abandons the notion of objectivity which is so valued in various fields in academic and scientific communities. An observer should wonder, why would someone abandon the scientific method and make a leap into the supernatural ? There's really no other explanation other than that individual's need for emotional comfort/support is more powerful than the seeking of "truth".

I'm happy Jordan has found confidence in his credence and values...that's fine but my god, he's human too... Do you know many mistakes somebody has to make to refine their views and values...he's not a Messiah.. he promoted responsibility and integrity...which is great.. but for Christ's sake... What's with all this godly praise...just live your life...do good...be responsible..forgive yourself if you mess up..and be happy.

Decisions are a balance between the frontal cortex and amygdala...it's ok to make mistakes...as long as you learn from them and point in a the opposite direction..we are all human...none of us are perfect..Christianity is about forgiveness. Yes, finally one of Dr JPs guest said it: what is missing in my opinion from Dr JPs analysis of the Cain and Abel story is that innocent blood needed to be shed in the sacrifices both brothers made. Abel does this, he sacrifices an innocent lamb. Cain's sacrifice is fruit. Abel understood and obeyed God when God said that the wages of sin are death. Cain decided to bring his own preferred sacrifice, in the words of Sinatra "I did it my way ." The whole of the OT is an unfolding, progressive revelation, looking forward to the Messiah, the fully man / fully God figure who would be the fulfulment of what the OT sacrifices had been pointing to: the wages of sin is death, and Christ lived a perfect life that He may die in our place. I empathise with Cain: I cannot bear the thought of killing an innocent lamb, but the fact is that God told mankind that the only way to atone for our sins was through the shedding of innocent blood. And Cain disobeyed, hence his offering was not accepted by God. We have the same choice to make this side of the NT. We can choose to accept Christ's propitiatory death for us or can, like Cain, choose to make other sacrifices to God, but they are both disobedient & ineffective. Cain probably went to a great deal of trouble in preparing his sacrifice of fruit. Which can be seen as an attempt at salvation through good works. But no one can find salvation that way: we must find salvation in Christ's substitutionary death. Good works will be the fruit of that. Christianity is alone amongst all the worlds religions in that it insists that the way to heaven is not through good works, but through Christ's sacrifice at Calvary.
Of course, faith without deeds is dead, but putting our faith in the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world precedes any good deeds we may do.

Once Jordan said something to the effect of "if something bad happens to you, it means you did something wrong somewhere along the line". He also talks about Cain and Abel, and Abel was killed by his brother - so naturally I wondered what Abel did wrong for that to happen to him. All interpretations of the story seem to maintain that Abel was innocent and yet that is incommensurate with Jordans aforementioned point, a point which I agree with. So I think that Abel's mistake was to ignore his struggling brother and fail to get down in the mud with him so to speak and to help lift him up. Cain says "am I my brothers keeper?" and I think the implication is that we ARE supposed to be our brothers keepers to some degree, and not to be content to succeed while they fail. Therefore I think that the destructive struggling dispossessed left are actually in part due to the sins of the successful, not active sins but sins of omission, namely to be content to thrive whilst others fail. Jesus says in the bible “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” I don't believe in communism and the government taking from the rich by force and giving to the poor, but like Jesus I think that people should VOLUNTARILY give to the poor, and that by aiding the downtrodden in a spirit of charity the reason for the anger and vindictiveness of the left would be dissolved and the anger with it, and so too the turmoil caused thereby. To conclude I don't think we solve this problem by fighting the left but by helping them. A problem never goes away until it is solved and we will never have peace until this problem goes away. Thank you.

Cain and Abel are the precursor to the Jewish people and Jesus, which is why Abel is portrayed as innocent.
The difference is that Jesus did it voluntarily, and rose to defeat death.
The early Christians lived in essentially communes, sharing everything, in many cases. Even then, they fasted and gave what they would have eaten during that fast to the poor and hungry.
I want to be clear, however, the poor and hungry are not the left. They are the excuse the left use to live their lives of luxury and point fingers at others for not doing enough. The left will find something to accuse us of, it is in their nature.

It shows that those doing bad and what wasn't created to do good will always be a pathetic and dishonest attempt from what is perfect. In the same way Cain offered fruit which was also pathetic and dishonest from what was needed, as a way to "cover up" from doing a real sacrifice. The guest obviously likes hearing himself talk and is extremely narcissistic, I appreciate your thought Mr. Peterson. You made a good point there. The story of Cain and Abel is that Cain was a quantity man and Able was a quality man. Read closely you will see Abel gave of his First Fruits. In this Abel was saying God was first. Cain was saying I gave you stuff God you should be happy with anything. Cain gave more but not of what was precious to Cain. Abel gave a piece of what he needed.
This may seem odd. So, in survival you have periods of time waiting for food. You are very hungry. You waited on a crop; you waited to see animals grow; or success hunting all the while you are hungry. Then instead of feeding yourself and caring for yourself you stopped and thanked God and gave that which you waited for to God. This is a high form of love and thought. Cain gave from his plenty that which he chose not to partake of. Cain's offering's quality may have been as good or better then Abel but the quality of love and thought was not. Cain never understood that message.
    May God bless you!

I think I hold some kind of record for being run off from the Methodist Church from its ministry. Once as a local licensed preacher in 1968 and again in 2008 as an Elder. It was at the same time both terrible and yet fulfilling in nature. What we often fail to appreciate is the physical toll that it takes. But God never shared an “Atta boy” with me for which I am grateful. What I seem to recall hearing from Jesus was something more like “ If you can’t get yourself up from this how are you going to get out of a grave?” Wowser.

No record. I was run off in '68 as a youth in MYF. Again in early 2000s as a contemplative with a Master's in spiritual formation. And again as an ordained elder in 2021 (and my husband in 2023). Terrible toll - physically, spiritually, emotionally, and financially since one's retirement funds are negatively impacted. Now a Free Methodist ordained elder leading a small church and working full time as a hospice chaplain. Why? Because I always knew Jesus is the mission; the denomination is just the means. There has been a cost, and I am content to serve Him, however imperfect I am.

I’ve begun to somewhat feel bad for Peterson, about a year or two now. I first stumbled into his videos on Nietzsche and other more academic subjects, maybe 6-7 years ago and they were quite insightful, informative and he was in a plain academic setting. I had no idea who he was and I don’t remember if his book had come out but he wasn’t nearly the phenomenon he is now. The difference then though is that he seemed jovial back then. And lately I’ve gotten the sense that he’s much angrier, harder than he once was. Perhaps that’s because of the sharp decay of society in north America, particularly in his home country-Canada has truly become unhinged in its suppression of free expression and attack on traditional life.
Yet I can also see that it could be that he resents being attacked and so vilified by the radical left that is so dominant in the media now - in what once was known as journalism-something rarely seen in its old haunts, and academia, Hollywood, professional organizations. Even his publishers’ staff decided to unfairly lacerate him in egregious fashion. It’s absolutely appalling and he has every right to be angry about it. That he continues on, perhaps he knows how clearly those of us on the right at least see the pillorying of his name as unwarranted and contemptible. It’s funny because I’ve never thought of him as a conservative or if the right, but it seems he may have been pushed in this direction by the vile behavior of these sad souls that now inhabit the left wing.

Adam and Even adorning fig leaves is the first religious act yes, here qualified by the term 'negative', but it can easily be identified as simply the first cultural act and the story of Cain and Abel clarifies this creation of culture further by revealing that Cain is in fact the creator of society and culture, building the first cities and trades. The story of Cain and Abel is actually interesting because in it is the depiction of the first ritual sacrifice for god occurring before the progenitor of the cultural act of sacrifice, being the murder of the innocent individual. To clarify, the story depicts the flow as being from ritual sacrifice to murder, but in reality the flow was from murder to ritual sacrifice - which I find unintentionally revealing. The story is also interesting because the fact that a killer seeds civilisation is actually the epiphany of a long line of discovery of human nature and behaviour but the writers of the Hebrew bible put it at the beginning because that's where it belongs in the timeline of human cognitive and behavioural development. Religion is like the fig leaf, its function is to blunt the effects of mimetic desire, being envy, resentment and violence. Religion was not good for man but *necessary* for group survival in a very real Darwinian sense, where the biggest threat to survival is not plague, lack of resources, other groups, but internal group conflict exacerbated by mimesis.

They are joyful and love everyone unconditionally, and I would argue that an enlightened adult like Mother Teresa also loves unconditionally. In my opinion, the only thing wrong with man is that man has forgotten, what’s really important in this world. But I can assure you one thing to yourself and you’ll lose the sense of what “wrong”

There are two animating spirits: Kane and Abel. That’s it. You’re either a life giving servant of God (which means you worship the highest good in behavioural terms) or you’re a bitter, violent rebel who thinks he knows better than his creator and wants to deconstruct the collective and remake the world in his own individualsitic image. Those are the only two ways of being. If you’re not a variation of Kane then you’re a variation of Abel.

That’s generally true Jordan. First thing is that there’s an inherent power struggle throughout biblical texts and that is that a rising power will always be resisted by an existing power. (A Foundational murder is required to unseat an existing power necessarily Romulus and Remus etc…Rene Girard posited this.)
Second is that envy bc after our needs our met we don’t know what to desire so we assign a standard that is relative to those around us (mimetic desire also posited by Rene Girard) this is a driving force of human nature and in a just society (a just cosmos) those who live with virtue will necessarily achieve the fruits of their labor (also a biblical thought). That acquisition inevitably incites the envious wrath of those without (we’ll assume a just society but society can be unjust) and the “final refuge of the incompetent is violence” so they will seek to seize those fruits by force. Aka Cain kills Abel.
Extrapolated out to a social setting there are ways to extract from those with resources. One is taxes, another is war, another is public shaming etc and that gets built into political movements undoubtedly (as you note socialism or Marxism…you simply seize via tax or social ostracism or political witch-hunt etc).
That’s a reflection of the dual survival mechanisms of humans we have both survival mechanisms one is to grow and the other is to kill. And one is more productive and socially constructive than the other.
Society inevitably can also be unjust however, Cain can acquire resources by deception in which case, the political movement or violent act gets muddied by appearing justified and it becomes a more complex problem under what circumstances is force of violence justified. And we have just war theory and the like that develops via biblical principals (St Augustine being the pioneer).
All those behaviors though reflect an aggregation of individual human psyches. And at the base level we all have within a Cain and an Abel. A violent animal shadow self and a higher cognitive self. Reflects our brain has both systems frontal cortex and animal brain.

There’s nothing a miserable person hates more than virtue. It is a psychological reminder of a personal failing (typically a repressed failing). And the greatest human justification for poor behavior is that everyone is doing it. That it’s normalized. So a virtuous standard must necessarily be expelled. That’s seen throughout history, Socrates, Pythagoras, the “wise man of the Jews” etc

    • @williamdecotiis8330
      @williamdecotiis8330 9 месяцев назад

You see this often in mood disorders where love is inverted with hate and they’ll actively reject love or intimacy as dangerous out of fear of abandonment bc the initial act of “love” was emotionally violent or boundariless and is now interpreted as dangerous.
That’s counterintuitive but to them love is violence. So meeting violence with violence is logical although it actively causes misery or decent into the “underworld” or “Hades”. A world of perpetual violence and distress.
As opposed to virtues which elevates toward peace and harmony aka Heaven

Hi Dr. Peterson, I was wondering if you think Cain’s purpose, by striking Abel, was actually to strike out against God himself?
It seems to me that what we’re seeing today is most fundamentally a hatred of the father figure.
I believe in this sense, the most fundamental story is Lucifer vs. God; and therefore perhaps the most important lesson we can derive from the Bible, is that: The force which defeats Evil, embodied by the angel Michael, is the warrior spirit.
I see that warrior spirit in you, in my father, my brother, myself. There is an army of young men who if they could learn to unleash and control the power they have within themselves.. who knows what the world could become.

He is not Jesus that with his speech alone made people follow him. Check the internet and you'll find channels dedicated to the faults of Jordan and his cultlike interpretation of the bible. He is a sinner, yet he see sins in others, not himself. Never.

There's something in...the blood that's always been at the heart of the animal sacrifice--something akin to adrenochrome, perhaps. A transferable vitality, released at the moment of sacrifice performed for a particular purpose, and directed by that purpose to "feed the gods". Abel was a herder/hunter; Cain was an agrarian, so his sacrifice transferred a meager vitality in comparison to Abel's blood sacrifice. There's something in the blood...

Firstly, Biblical stories can be interpreted in many ways. Thirdly, I do largely agree with the analysis about the destructive character of socialism.

I take my view of Cain and Abel from the KJV where it is written 'offering' not sacrifice which would mean a gift to give to God. This view allows for one to look at the intention of the giver as to why their gift was not acceptable. In other words Abel gave from the firstlings of his flock while Cain gave fruit but not first fruits.

Cain may have struggled to get the sacrifices he made, meaning he may have had to scale mountains to acquire live animals to sacrifice to God. Personally, this is the scariest aspect because it means the type of life God may call you to live through may be one where you continuosly face mountains, a journey which would require the noblest of souls to traverse through or risk falling into bitter and envious resentment. That type of devotion requires a serious value for God, and when that disappears resentment is almost definitely bound to be the end result.
This couples with an idea I had about waves civilisations follow which practically always end in tyranny. It's that when we struggle the most (either post or during the tyrannical stage), we harbour a deeper value for the essence of God, because, be it in the desert or in slavery, through attributes like Truth, Love, Responsibility etc, we find our redemption: a Holy foundation to build anew off of. For the first few generations within which we see growth off of this foundation we hold those redeeming attributes in high regard, however, as generations go by and we find ourselves in a state of increasing convenience, the value of those attributes become not so apparent.
Combining the two, we can see how a group that sees another within their same system as profiting at a scale they could only dream of, while they suffer to meet their basic necessities, could grow bitterly resentful, and only more so when faced with thr proposition that they haven't sacrificed enough to get what they are fantasizing about. This could cause an uproar that ends in tyranny one way or another. It may have been a combination like this that helped someone like Nietzsche predict the horrors that would come about with what he called the 'death of God'.
You could be in a position where it appears certain that no matter how hard you fought you could never reach the position another is in, but, first of all with the right determination you'll get somewhere significant in comparison to where you started off, and with God you can find peace in the thought that what you are promised far exceeds anything you see here.
