  • On this episode of Healthytarian Living, holistic teacher Evita Ochel (www.evitaochel...) shares how to eat an avocado. The video includes a demo of its preparation, sharing about the fruit's nutritional benefits, buying tips, storing, meal ideas and more.
    *NOTE: Take extra care and be mindful when using your kitchen knives to cut avocados or remove pits. The degree of sharpness, the pressure you use, and type of knife you use will all make a big difference to the outcome, and YOUR safety is YOUR responsibility.*

    About the Avocado Pit: Information about the avocado pit is NOT included in the video because this video is intended for everyday eating for the general audience and the avocado pit is NOT a common or easy part of the avocado to eat, nor is it necessary or proven safe in certain quantities. The pit requires an intensive preparation process in order to make it possible to eat without hurting one's teeth or choking, and it requires tools, like a high-powered blender or dehydrator, that many people will not have, making it impractical to consider or recommend to most people. Even though the pit is edible, and just like any other "plant seed" it does contain nutrients and health benefits, it is medicinal in its chemical composition and its safety and dosage have NOT yet been established. This means that it should be treated more as a medicine, than a food, and used with conservative wisdom after thoroughly learning about its properties, risks, and how they may influence one's health. Consider the apple seed or apricot kernel seed, as other such similar examples. These contain compounds that can be medicinal or toxic, depending on how they are used. According to the California Avocado Commission, "The seed of an avocado contains elements that are not intended for human consumption." www.california...

    If you buy a bag full of avocados you can expect to find at least one rotten avocado, out of six, and probably more than one. It is their way of selling their garbage.

    • @Healthytarian
      @Healthytarian  6 лет назад

      I am sorry to hear about your experience Bud. This hasn't been the case where I live and how I get my avocados. The most important thing is to make sure that all of the avocados in the bag are fully firm when buying them, this way you can prevent getting moldy or decaying ones.

    Please USE your cutting board. You might be surprised to learn that in the field of emergency medicine there is a term called "avocado hand" because this injury is so common. It's very easy to accidentally slice tendons, etc and thus even need extensive surgery and rehabilitation from avocado cutting injuries. Be safe. Use a sharp knife AND a cutting board.

    I like avocados by themselves with a little salt. And 3 times now I've had 2 of them for lunch at work. And they really are helping me lose weight too. But it's great to know just how unique they are when it comes to the many health benefits they have. And they're a lot better for us than they seem according to their appearance.

    I eat one medium sized avocado for breakfast with some natural yogurt and a banana. I have completely given up greasy fast food and diet drinks and sodas. I don't eat any processed sugar. All the sugar that i get is from fruits and vegetables. I have lost 15 pounds in the past 1,5 months just because of this simple change in my diet. I don't eat red meat anymore and have moved on to fish and chicken (on occasion). I haven't began exercising yet but i will soon, im lazy i know.

    I literally can't believe you cut right onto your hand. Please never do that with a sharp knife for your own sake.

    • @Healthytarian
      @Healthytarian  8 лет назад

      Thank you for your kind concern. My knife is actually not sharp, and something I share in other lessons is that every "chef" must know and be conscious of their tools and methods. Hence what may be right for me, obviously may not be right for someone else, and vice-versa.

      @@Healthytarian I could see in that video that you were using a dull knife. Dull knives are even more dangerous than sharp knives. So sharp knives are safer AND easier to work with. If somebody needs to watch a video about taking the fruit out of an avocado, then that person probably does not have good knife skills. IMO - It is irresponsible for an instructor to be using dangerous cutting techniques with a dull knife.

    Rich in fiber, vitamins B, C, E and K, also potassium, it also has some Omega-3 (ALA) eat raw, try to get the darker part of the flesh that's stick to the skin, also the seed has a lot of nutrients but needs to be dried and then grinded into powder, mixed with other food to be easily edible

    For a bachelor who stumbles about,making his own meals and trying to eat healthy this is great information. I'd never thought about peeling the skin off - always just stuck a spoon in and scooped it out, ignoring the darker green area near the skin.and throwing it out, Beautifully presented - clear and concise . Very impressed!

      I scoop with a spoon, too. I have no problem getting the meat near the skin. In fact, when I scoop, I leave less fruit on the skin than Ms. Ochel leaves using her messy extra steps of peeling. If I want slices, I scoop out the entire avocado half - no need to quarter - there is virtually no fruit left on the shell.

      Thank you so much for your feedback Paul. And I understand it may not look ideal, however as I share in the video, care and caution must be exercised by each person during the cutting of such foods, but really any foods. I know my knife, which in this case was very dull, and aside from the pointy tip, quite harmless to me. Mindfulness in the kitchen is of utmost importance for sure.

      Healthytarian Thank you for your reply to my message. I do understand what you mean about your knife not being that sharp and your care in using it. Thanks to you, in part, I have been eating an avocado each day now. I appreciate all of your tips especially picking and knowing when ripe. I have used my paring knife the same way as you when preparing the avocado. I can now sense the proper ‘ripeness’, the dark green close to the skin and just having to scoop out the contents with a spoon. Thank you so much for the avocado education!!!

    Yes, for the half you want to save until tomorrow, you can also sprinkle on citric acid or ascorbic acid (vitamin C) (also called fruit fresh) available in the canning section of your grocery store. Also works for fresh peaches and for apples to keep them from turning brown. These are the active ingredients in lemon juice and lime juice.
