Well hello fellow free human, or free human to be! Thrilled to have you here yet again for another episode from the 'Free Human' series.
Today we’ve got Erika Drolet, a French Canadian that lives in El Salvador part time, as well as extensively traveling the world in search of spectacular waves. She works online, running multiple businesses, helping to empower women, with focus on board sports.
We dive into how her free life started, her mindset, her upbringing, building and living in El Salvador, what freedom means to her, how she makes money and more.
As I’m exploring Erika’s world, I decided in order to properly experience her lifestyle, I would love to give surfing in El Salvador a go, so I got coaching assistance from world renowned coach Marcelo Castellanos from Puro Surf.

I’d like to see a free human video also with people doing things that are less fashionable. For example, you can be a cancer researcher and yet be free. You can be a builder and be free. And so on. I believe the real unconventional thing would be to show how to be free thinker, free spirit, free human without being a youtuber, influencer, yoga or surf teacher. Just a thought.

Since December last year I've taken my job as an architect online. I've turned my boss into my client, basically, and can now work location-independently. I am currently travelling Australia, while working online. So it is possible with 'less fashionable jobs' for sure as well! Where there is a will, there's a way. It ain't a perfect lifestyle, but you know, nothing will be a 100% perfect. As they say: choose your shit sandwich.

I'm a 22 y.o. girl living in Turkey. I'm about to graduate from a top school. I studied something I thought I loved but burnt out completely by the end of 5 years. The pandemic hit right in the middle and I used it as an opportunity while everybody went back to live with their parents: got my driver's licence, got a face-to-face job (because fck restrictions and lockdowns) and got an apartment. I stayed far longer than I planned at this job despite how exhausting it was alongside school, because I realized I loved affording to live by myself in the big city and I plain LOVED making money. I got to thinking about my ideal work situation; how could I make sure it didn't fck up my sleep and diet as much, would it be remote or in person... and dear Sorelle, your videos are giving me the guidance I need. Thank you so much. I know for me, it's time, this is the year I power up. I'm sure there are others who feel the same way. So thank you for being a lighthouse for us ♡ You've been the one person I genuinely relate to on the internets for some time. And Free Human series? I resonate with that sht harder than ever. Can't wait.

I wish these episodes would go more into the nitty gritty of things.... For instance - okay, she spent 115,00 on building the house and 40,000 on buying the land. But did she have this money casually sitting in her bank account, or did she have to take out a loan...? I would love to see not just WHAT they did but also HOW they did it! Having said that - v. inspiring story. Thank you for sharing Sorelle!

It's almost always exactly what you'd think. They come from wealth.
I'm Mexican, and most "locals" are getting REALLY tired at how gentrified many places have become thanks to all the "free people (foreigners)", digital nomads, etc. Most locals will NEVER, EVER have a chance to live a "free" lifestyle. I'm not giving an opinion. It's a fact and a reality for the "locals". I'm unsuscribing. I wish you the best ☮️🍀

All digital nomads everywhere live that lifestyle because they arbitrage their own cost of living in a country with foreigners’ willingness to pay. “Locals” in lots of these places would actually have that same opportunity but obviously generally lack the resources, tools and education to run with that. Foreigners living in those countries have a real obligation to benefit the communities before those are forced to leave because they become priced out

This!! The best thing about travelling is that you meet so many different people with so many different ways of living life. And it's a huge inspiration to meet people living life from another perspective from yourself - whatever that looks like 💛 Nothing's wrong, just various ways of living life. Loved the way you describe surfing. I’m a surfer too and the whole surfing experience is like magic to me. There, in the middle of the ocean, waiting for a wave, reading tj, being so in the moment. The feeling of rush for going for that wave that’s scares you a little but you know you can make it. Two things can happen, you get it and it’s like the most crazy feeling of joy, your start laughing out of joy. Or you wipe out, you feel the force of the ocean over you, you can kinda of see it as you are being held down by it by a few seconds, just to emerge and paddle back again, waiting for the ocean to grant another wave to try.
This series is so insightful and has such a bright, vibrant energy that is so inspiring. I just realized I wrote a few pages of notes in my journal after watching this. My thoughts, what I found inspiring, what I think I would like to try out from your lifestyles, what maybe I wouldn't - I literally use your videos to self-coach me into a free human. :))
Thankyou both for your wonderful story. You are so luck to realize all this when you are young. A lot of us women in our 50 and 60 feel the same way. Also love Sorelle’s reminder to get back into hobbies you used to have but have put off clearing off the rust. I’ve been meaning to get back into guitar (played in a band in high school/early college days), but just haven’t. Don’t really know what I’m afraid of, other than the initial pain while I build up callouses again. 👍🏼

Is that the same woman you did a video about a while back? I thought that one was off west of the US mainland, El Salvador is down south. At least you got smart and found a warm place. Real estate just about everywhere is over priced about 100 times what it is actually worth. I priced a tiny piece of land down around Cusco Peru which s supposed to be mild climate all year with no high or low extreme temps it was advertised as damaged farmland which I guess means they poisoned the soil so you cannot grow anything in it, it was $25K USD for less than 2.5 acres, I might pay 10% of that if it were larger. There is a young woman down in Puerto Rico that was reporting on a place named Coachella the other day and the water has dangerous levels of arsenic in it , I wonder if that is what the problem is there in Peru?I think that would make it unusable for farming but they are using it for farming, drinking, everything I guess. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. It's ok here at least half the year or more but there is no beach or ocean, I like the beach and the ocean.

It would be very inspiring to see people with health issues or disabilities being free… ✨✨ I used to travel a lot and do a lot of hiking but now I suffer from a chronic illness that is preventing me from doing a lot of sport so sadly surfing is not an option for me. I feel like a slave to my health and I can’t see myself being free ever again… 😢
Have you read the book , Man’s search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl?? Highly highly recommend! He was a Jewish Psychiatrist who survived the concentration camps, he talks exactly about this subject. How humans can remain free despite the most horrible situations. Best wishes to you.
I feel you. I have Ulcerative Colitis and sometimes can't even leave the house during a flare up. I love seeing these types of videos, but it is difficult to imagine myself ever having the same luxury. 😮💨
@TheMagicCrafter I have struggled with crohns for many years it really really sucks. I don't know what your journey is but I can see now after digging really deep after years of great suffering that a lot of stress and symptoms comes from I'm super sensitive, have poor boundaries, have been a people pleaser, have negative beliefs of world & people, have unregulated nervous system and old trauma. All very clearly contributing to my health situation and was totally unconscious , I couldn't see it myself for a long time. I do meditation, some hypnosis app daily guided meditation for IBS, I watch recovery stories channels on RUclips on chronic illness, also consider brain retraining, I do some eft tapping and journaling on/off. Body mind connecting , many factors contributing. I really hope you get better , it can be extremely hard and very lonely having these kinds of issues, because people don't understand it or can see it. Wish you the best ❤

I think you may have missed the end. To do what you love is part of being free. If they love what they do, fills their days with joy, then the teachers, doctors etc can be free. I’m a teacher and I love my work. I absolutely feel like I am free ❤
They can be free doing these roles. Freedom, as you’ll learn watching more of this series, isn’t about not having a career. It’s about consciously choosing what you want and being Internally free and foremost. And I can guarantee you there are SO many people in the world that are choosing these careers, and that’s precisely what makes them free.

Just like everyone else in the West, you're free do what you want while staying within your means, but you're still a slave to you senses - you're a hedonist. Just yesterday I started wondering if there has already been a new episode of "Free Human" and I checked your account and boom! There it is! Thank you so much, Sorelle, for this! I think so many people need it and are inspired by it to change something in their own lives - me included! What I love most is the fearlessness of the people in your series - it reminds me of what Brené Brown says: "Daring greatly means the courage to be vulnerable. It means to show up and be seen. To ask for what you need. To talk about how you're feeling. To have the hard conversations."

The part of Erika's lifestyle that appeals to me most is her attitude, " I don't give a fuck about what anyone else thinks of me".
People-pleasing and the fear of the letting others down is a challenging behaviour to change ( but I'm working on it!)

Sometimes other countries you find are just so much more comfortable and easy to be in than your own. Despite the culture differences and language gaps. Sometimes you enter a place you know you can’t find in your home country and you feel like you’re home. And I dunno, I feel like it’s okay to go searching and wholeheartedly embrace that feeling. Sometimes it’s a brand new culture, like surf culture for instance, that you just sync with and where you find you’re a fit. And you may not have grown up with that culture but you find it makes you happy and to be honest, THAT’S GOOD ENUF FOR ME.

Awesome video. If you come to Thailand, please visit us in Koh Lanta, Krabi. I interview people on our island and I feel like freedom is one of the biggest for many people to move to the island. So maybe we are not entirely free on our own, but when we move to the island, we feel liberated!
