    I shall never forget hearing this 'in the round' at Greyfriars in Edinburgh, an intimate church known for its particularly fine acoustic. As we sat in the pews, the SCO Chorus singers stood in the aisles all around us, and the sound was magnificent, transcendent. Afterwards I don't think anyone's eyes were dry.

    Beautiful. Haunting. Ethereal. Un-earthly. Awe-inspiring. The nearest you'll get to God in this world. The singers did a magnificent job with a piece of music that must be hugely challenging both to sing and conduct. I understand all those who said it reduced them to tears. It did the same thing to me.

    Spem in alium (Latin for "Hope in any other") is a 40-part Renaissance motet by Thomas Tallis, composed in c. 1570 for eight choirs of five voices each, widely considered to be the greatest piece of English early music and one of the greatest choral works ever composed.

      @@DrawYourHead yes only one of and this recording is not a good example either. There should be no women's voices at all in this. The treble lines should be sung by boys and the alto lines by men. What we have here is the equivalent of a piece of music intended for a string quartet but now played with a trumpet instead of first violin. Spem in Alium is great but there are other greats, such as William Mundy's Vox Patris Caelestis. Biggest and noisiest is not always best...

      Regular Rod You are quite right that there is a huge amount of wonderful polyphonic style music by many composers. Also, the point you make about boy trebles is valid, and not only in music of this period - the very fine masses of Haydn for example are enhanced enormously by the use of boy trebles which allows for a spectacular contrast with the soprano solos where they occur - the tone is very different.
      However, by any measure, great or small, Spem in Alium is one of the greatest pieces of music from any age.

    A transcendent piece - I remember going to the Cloisters to hear the sound installation of 40 speakers, each playing a close-mic'd recording of one of the singers performing their part. It was an incredibly moving experience, and a testament to the times we live in with regards to how we are used to hearing sound, and yet, quite raised above that status quo in its expert implementation.

And seriously sung - by all age groups, nobody bursting out of evening dress or trying to look sexy, just perfect voices striving for perfection. As near to angels or birdsong as anything but let's not forget the discipline and training and art that results in this brilliance. Wonderful. The music has been relegated from the sublime to the ordinary by being pushed along too fast, giving it a sense of being rushed and somewhat breathless; the wonderful fluid and hanging harmonies have no time to register nor resonate.

    I sang this wonderful piece in the Cathedral Basilica SS Peter & Paul in Philadelphia with Tamara Brooks conducting Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia in the late '70s or early '80s.. We did it with 3 or 4 voices per part. The Cathedral is a huge barn of a hall and I am sure some of the sounds we made then are still up near the ceiling somewhere. The Tallis Scholars recording found on RUclips has intonation problems, normal in a massive a capella work like this one but disconcerting nonetheless. There is a 2-CD release with David Willcocks, George Guest and Stephen Cleobury conducting two hours of Tallis including the Spem in Allium and the Lamentations plus many other works sung by King's College Choir and St. John's College Choir. Superb! We had the privilege years ago of hearing The (augmented) Sixteen and Christophers perform Spem in Allium in London. Equally great. The power of this music to me is the echoic effects that keep adding to the sound. Better live than recorded, better sung than listened to.

      There is some evidence that this was composed for the transept of a great Elizabethan house with balconies at each corner of the intersect. So that arrangement might have been close to the original.

    This was also performed in Columbus Ohio at the Saint Joseph Cathedral with singers from Cincinnati and Lancaster Ohio and other find singers from the greater Columbus area. It was an incredible experience. Sadly, those of us who were in the St. Joseph’s Cathedral choir at the time did not get to hear the recording but we did hear the criticism of the conductor who waxed on with his so-called philosophical and musicological insight as to what we did and did not do in the recording as he heard it. To this day I wonder what the sound truly was like and I would love to hear a recording from that first Sunday in March 2015 and hear it for myself along with some of my colleagues .

    I sing in a Madrigal I´ve created and I can only imagine how difficult was to invite all these great singers to perform this wonderful and difficult Motet with 40 different voices. I can imagine how many rehearsals they had to achieve this quality. Congratulations to Mr Christophers and all the singers. I´d like to be there, singing or watching.

    Well done, considering this isn't just The Sixteen but also a large group of amateur and semi-pro singers who auditioned to be in the masterclass and in the choir. So there really is no point comparing this to the Tallis Scholars or The Sixteen just on their own...

    • @Roheryn100

    • @el7284
      @el7284 5 лет назад

      Why do you prefer the Sixteen to the Scholars? Characteristic overbearing soprano lines aside, the Scholars usually have the Sixten beat in every other regard, including, yes, sheer vivacity. I'm very objective about sound too.

    I just found out, thanks to a RUclips sidebar, that this magnificent choral piece, which sounds for all the world like angels in communication with G-d, has apparently been used in a badly written piece of fanfic erotica, namely, 50 Shades of Grey. Thomas Tallis must be spinning in his grave. Not that I would ever object to erotica, you understand - but bad art is a sin. Alas!... That aside, very good performance. Remarkable.

      The dislikes may be due to the sound quality of the recording on the users' equipment. The treble came over somewhat shrill which is a real nuisance as the upper parts are around G for a lot of the time once the polyphony gets going.
