    What I learned most about procrastination is that at its core it has less to do with a lack of time management, motivation, enthusiasm, or drive, and more to do with the lack of intrinsic meaning and purpose in life. When a person forgets the deeper "why" related to what they're doing, no amount of will power or encouragment can get them going. Find that meaning of your life, the purpose...your main mission for this task, job, thing...and the rest will happen naturally, you'll be unstoppable. Return to your core meaning and purpose. Mindfulness helps with this, and for some people its religion, and another way to rediscover it is through analyzing one's fears and pains. The book 30 Days to Overcome Procrastination by Corin Devaso was a cool little mindfulness book I enjoyed, but also journaling is a power move too...write out your life mission statement, take time and think about it.

      I kinda disagree. Discipline isn't about finding meaning in what you are doing. I find zero meaning in doing dishes or laundry or repairs on the house but it has to be done or everything will fall apart around you, you will fall behind and pretty quickly overwhelmed by it all. Now you can find meaning in other things in life,like things that interest you, your family. Force yourself to get started and that usually is enough momentum to get you going.

    • @BeNLaGRAiNE09
      @BeNLaGRAiNE09 5 месяцев назад +5

      @@Rufio1975Kinda contradictory. You find zero meaning in doing laundry or dishes but do it because all will fall apart if you don't. You just gave it a meaning/purpose: keeping shit together. Building blocks.

    • @Rufio1975
      @Rufio1975 5 месяцев назад

      @@BeNLaGRAiNE09 Sorry I disagree. That's just chores that have to be done. No meaning or deep purpose. It doesn't make me think. I don't derive pleasure or attain anything from it. Chores mean nothing to me. They just have to be done because I don't have a butler

    • @Recon_19D3x
      @Recon_19D3x 5 месяцев назад

      Discipline is more about doing what needs to be done especially when it's something you don't want to do. But doing it anyways. Especially the things that don't have an immediate purpose or meaning where the reward is harder to see.

    My sugar coated lies recently caught up to me. I went to the dr and stepped on the scale. Wow😮😮😮 Needless to say… I immediately started my own DEF reset. Now on WW, I was super happy that I found Mulk locally. It is within my daily points, and my new ‘snack’ as I get back on track. Also doing heavy decluttering in my life. Consumerism sneaks in as comfort, and it’s hard to notice until it’s taken you over. I don’t want a debt filled life, I don’t want to pump myself with pharmaceuticals. We were meant to be better and healthier. Thanks Jocko.

    Jocko..makes sense and it's simple..problem is if they can do it now they would have already done it yesterday. People who struggle with procrastination and laziness CAN'T START. The gap between wanting to start and starting is the bridge that needs to be built first.

    What works for me is doing something to feel better just a hair and then doing just a hair of work. Pick any spot to start. Once you get even a start you will easily follow through on the rest naturally because your making progress. Starting sucks but just a little ember is all you need to make a huge flame.

    Thank you Jocko for all your effort to motivate people to take ownership od their life. I've been running like mad from discipline my whole life and this time I've decided that it is enough. Last night before bed I had dishes from dinner on the counter and the old me wanted to leave it for the morning. But the little Jocko in my head screamed - stop procrasrinating and just do it. And I did it and felt awsome after. 😊
    I'm getting up before my enemy, training right after waking up and I don't give up. Thank you so much for that push forward. ❤

    Planners are great. The problem is holding yourself to what you're supposed to do. I'm decent at sticking to working out and keeping to a decent diet. But I struggle with errands or chores or things I'm supposed to do that aren't regular things. Like cleaning, or shopping for a car or house, or working on my resume or I could name many other things. I can put them on all the to do lists I want but a lot of the time I'll just say screw it and ignore that. Just doing it is the problem. Easy and hard at once.

    The winning combo is GTD (Getting Things Done, by David Allen) methodology + Jocko's Extreme Ownership/Laws of Combat.
    They compliment each other- Extreme Ownership is awesome but light on 'how' to track things. GTD is perfect for organizing your life, but without self-discipline...falls apart.
    Combine the two and it is simply amazing. But more than that, if you are truly really lazy - which is not a bad thing as long as you are aware of it...this combo allows for laziness, essentially, it allows you to 'feel' lazy because your efficiency is always increasing.

    I like to write task down too, but my problem is when I go to the university I start off well writing things down and completing task early. Then as soon as week 8 hits I get bogged down in so much task that I stop writing them and just do them as they come, and sometimes procrastinate too much because I want to do something else rather than homework. I always end up paying for it doing last minute papers but I still get good grades. 😂

    Health factors are responsible for my inability to remain consistent. Unexplainable fatigue and random muscle pain causing cramps. Pressure induced anxiety causing a variety of symptoms. Random back pain and the need to rest to avoid missing work.
    I AM LISTENING. I have to get healthy before I can stay consistent.
    Brain fog has become normal.
    Writing things down is useful and helps me focus better. I also believe that the best solution is for the TRUTH to prevail. I am so grateful for everyone who is listening and helping me through the process. BUT for once just once I need to win. That means some people in my family and community are going to lose. Winning matters.

      I get the joke, but just for people who might have missed his point, I just wanted to say that what Jocko is saying is completely right. To say what he is saying maybe a bit more bluntly, if you want to get something done (short or longterm), the surefire way to do it is to literally force yourself. It's gonna be annoying and it's gonna hurt. But over time you will build resistance to the hurt and that is how discipline will be built. So 'just do it' doesn't work if you look at it from a rah-rah, happy vibes perspective. Really, it means force yourself, get hurt, become better, build callouses.

      In order to be disciplined you have to overcome laziness. It's a constant choice that you have to make every single day. Its not like a vaccine, that you take once and you're good to go... no. Nobody is free from it. It is instinctive and enprinted in our genetics. Some people know how to overcome it more often then others, that's all...

    • @l.b.5814
      @l.b.5814 5 месяцев назад +11

      Jocko probably had a healthy amount of discipline instilled in him in his youth and he likely has a brain that produces a very generous amount of dopamine. He might have had optimal operation weather in his life and the correct tools to cope with it. Whether or not we did, we can still take some inspiration or knowledge from him.
      I would like to hear a podcast with him and a psychologist who specializes in ADHD, Autism, PTSD and other neurodivergent issues discuss how his advice and perspectives might differ in some individuals with different brain chemistries. Sometimes you don't have enough dopamine or have sensory issues to overcome on top of your typical human laziness...those scenarios might need modified advice. Some advice isn't for everyone.
      To anyone who isn't feeling productive enough today.... Don't be too hard on yourself or beat yourself up like you're a buff Jocko, cuz you might not be Jocko. Are you the kind of person who could thrive in boot camp and train with Navy Seals? Not everyone can. There are things Jocko isn't great at, I'm sure. We really aren't all built the same. You're you. Maybe that and a little inspiration is all you're meant to take from him today. Just be the best you that you can manage and know tomorrow is a new day.
