Thank you for your service Sir. My brother was a Marine KIA January 1968 at 18 in Vietnam. I love Jane Fonda. She tried to stop a war and worked tirelessly to help the Indigenous and others in a society that are not treated equally. I am so glad to see a Marine speak up for such a dedicated woman whose crime was to challenge the system and speak against an unjust war.
Wow Jane looks so much like her father in this clip loved her in Klute, so deserving -I wish she would have won for They Shoot Horses Don't They? She was Devastating in that.

Just saw "Klute" earlier this evening in a phenomenal, pristine 35mm archival print at LACMA (thanks, AMPAS!) I liked the film more than ever and Jane is certainly deserving of this award. She played that character perfectly. And seeing it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen, one can really get immersed (I certainly did) in the character, mood, paranoia psychological tension of wonderful storytelling. And looking back, this is a great speech. As everyone knows, this was Jane's "controversial" period, and keeping it mum was the right thing to do. A class act all the way!
@@david.hirsch4235 I was looking for that criticism to arise. Vietnam was an utter catastrophe, just as Iraq and Afghanistan have turned out to be. Fonda was a bit player in the whole affair, but felt the wrath of the betrayal Americans rightfully felt over the war. However, that wrath was never aimed where it should be, at least not fully, which belongs with the Johnson and Nixon administrations. We were lied into that war, then lied to again by the Bush administration in 2003. That's where Americans should place their anger; our own sick government...and ourselves for electing and re-electing them...
Fonda's very short remarks were entirely appropriate. She was still to win a second Oscar six years later for "Coming Home". Also was nominated for "Julia", "China Syndrome", "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?", AND "On Golden Pond" Say what you will: she was/is a great actress.

Even though she obviously has had plastic surgery she didn't go the extremes of many. She is looks very physically fit for her age. Peter looks great too. Good Fonda genes I guess.

Jane Fonda in fact does do Broadway and in fact received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play, two years ago for a play I believe called "44 Variatons", as she is a genuis talent in cinema, television movies and on the stage.
Jane was great in this film and deserved this, her first oscar. 1971 was a very good year for female actor performances. In fact there were about a dozen performances that year deserving of an oscar nomination but as always just room for the top five which were Jane Fonda(Klute), Julie Christie(McCabe&Mrs.Miller), Glenda Jackson(Sunday, Bloody Sunday), Vanessa Redgrave(Mary Queen of Scots) and Janet Suzman(Nicolas and Alexandra); seven other terrific performances that year that sadly could not make the cut were Kitty Winn(The Panic in Needle Park)-she won The Cannes Film Festival BestActressAward), Ruth Gordon(Harold and Maude), Julie Christie gave a second great performance that year in "The Go Between" as did Glenda Jackson in "Mary, Queen of Scots), Gena Rowlands(Minnie and Moskowitz), Shirley MacLaine(Desperate Characters) and Jessica Walters(Play Misty For Me)
Excuse me--but YOU said that Jackson was nominated for Best Supporting Actress--YOU are the one who said that. I corrected you and then you insisted you were right when you were wrong. So who's the arrogant one now? And she wasn't nominated for Mary, Queen of Scots--she was nominated for Sunday Bloody Sunday.
Julie Christe was in Venice, Italy filming "Don't Look Now", otherwise she would have attended, as she attended the BAFTA awards the month earlier, closer in London,UK for her 2 nominations for both "McCabe&Mrs.Miller" and "The Go Between". Most critics predicted Jane Fonda would win, as she swept The New York Film Critics Award votes for Best Actress, similar to her same win (NYFC) two years earlier for her equally sublime work in "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?".
An Oscar well deserved... and a speech well said. Jane wanted to speak out against the injustice of the Vietnam War, but, at the advice of her father, Henry, she was suggested not to, but the way she stated what she said, said so much to the humility and respect she has for the movie industry, the American people, and for those experiencing the trauma of the times. A true activist, an amazing actress, an American hero.
She was brilliant in Klute. Even better in China Syndrome. Great Actress. And the speech showed class. She could have said alot but felt it was not the time or place.
The 1st is a sequence of acting Oscar wins for films shot by the great Gordon Willis. Between the period 1972 to 1978 Marlon Brando, John Houseman, Robert De Niro, Jason Robards and Diane Keaton would also win. Despite these successes, Gordon went overlooked for every single one of these films.
Gordon Willis' eye and painterly compositions are breathtaking. Don't know if you've seen his only directorial debut "Windows" but if you haven't, go find a copy and see it.
Just watched it on Tubi full movie for first time, had watched bits pieces before. Anyway I had that wig 😅. Love old movies, memories of phones ringing, even large cities were safe then. I lived in Philly, Boston, Cleveland. Now in California\ retired--fear factor-violence in USA.😢

Janet Suzman is my Favorite Actress. I appreciate her performance in Nicholas and Alexandra as Tsarina Alexandra. Although she didn't win, still I consider her as the Best Actress for me.
Her husband Roger Vadim's barber created this hairdo for her. She ws SICK of dealing with a mass of styled blonde hair. It became the exact and iconic hair style she wore in Klute.
@broadjumper1 true and she has apologised for that one statement in 1988. It was an emotional response to the killing that was taking place, but it wasn't right for her to insult PoWs. That doesn't make her a bad person, just human.
Given what was going on with her and politics at the time, it's astonishing she said almost nothing. Today this would have been a three-minute lashing out at every single person in America.
I love you Jane! She made a mistake and she apologized. But, for goodness sake, how could anyone in their right mind think she was supporting the enemy and disrespecting our troops? She thought it might be a way for everyone to stop fighting by bringing both sides closer. Did she put herself at risk? OF COURSE SHE DID! Thank you, Jane. I know you love our Country as much as I do and lets throw in a few million more who have forgiven you.

I remember when Jane organized a meeting with Vietnam veterans to extend a hand towards peace, I admired her for doing this because the hatred was misplaced and should have been towards the war profiteers and a corrupt administration. Ms Fonda kept the meeting low key without cameras because she didn’t want it to be called a political stunt. All I know is is when she came out and spoke briefly it was clear she was shaken.
Does anyone ever mention the performance? Brilliantly played, well deserved. A shame Donald Sutherland wasn't even nominated.
Klute has one of the most beautiful musical scores--besides the brilliant Fonda performance.
Agreed! I've been playing the theme just recently; love the tender yet forceful tones of the horns
i just rewatched Klute the performance was incredible
LOVE HER, LOVE HER, LOVE HER!!!!
A truly patriot and a lover of the United States of America. The real one.
Amen.
Carravaggio =a PATRIOT ,hahaha a LOUNGE COMMUNIST.
Exactly.
You’re an unbelievable human being and ACTRESS! Love you dearly!
Wow,what a lineup
Jane was rocking those emo bangs!
Just watched it on Tubi full movie for first time, had watched bits pieces before. Anyway I had that wig 😅. Love old movies, memories of phones ringing, even large cities were safe then. I lived in Philly, Boston, Cleveland. Now in California\ retired--fear factor-violence in USA.😢
even though i wasnt born until 1986, i wish we could go back to that year just so we could have all the greats back that are not with us today :(
Klute was a great movie.
This would have made an interesting spectacle in its own right had neither Janet Susman nor Jane Fonda shown up.
They were all very deserving.
Loved the Klute music when she won
Jane Fonda also won the Golden Globe, The NY Film Critics , and the national Society of Film Critics for Klute. Brilliant, naturalistic performance.
Frankly, I don't care about Fonda's political opinions, at least when it comes to here. She gives one of the best performances ever, and she is one of my favorite winners ever.
Klute was a masterpiece and Jane made it so! Klute and Looking for Mr. Goodbar with Diane Keaton are at the top of my all time favorite movies, these women were at their apex! I can't leave Natalie Wood out, Splendor in the Grass was magnificent in every way!
The one and only ❤️👑 Jane Fonda.
i just watched klute for the first time. i don't know how it took me so long. anyways, what a well deserved oscar. the best performance i've seen from jane. and damn does she look good too.
HOW, could I not be totally in love with this woman-----------especially after seeing her in " Klute ", 5 times that year ? ------------Jane, in her " Klute do " ------------was luminous. --------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
She was brilliant!
Yay! Four British actresses nominated, cool! But Fonda did deserve that Oscar, brilliant acting ˚•˚
Janet Suzman is my Favorite Actress. I appreciate her performance in Nicholas and Alexandra as Tsarina Alexandra.
Although she didn't win, still I consider her as the Best Actress for me.
wow ive never seen this, i cant believe she didnt go for it, but i respect her even more for the short and sweet
Her best role.,, gave me chills
Her husband Roger Vadim's barber created this hairdo for her. She ws SICK of dealing with a mass of styled blonde hair. It became the exact and iconic hair style she wore in Klute.
Jane was not silenced. She actually said that line on the advice of her father.
Jane Fonda looks really beautiful here and she was sick that night with the flu.
Just like Brando she was against fascism and American imperialism. What a lion hearted women she is!
I love how 3 of the 5 nominees didn't even both to show up.
They're all British. 2 had already won. And the Oscars wasn't such an event as it is today.
@broadjumper1 true and she has apologised for that one statement in 1988. It was an emotional response to the killing that was taking place, but it wasn't right for her to insult PoWs. That doesn't make her a bad person, just human.
Among other things, Jane just has the best eyes.
Always liked her hair cut so much so I had mine cut just like it
Given what was going on with her and politics at the time, it's astonishing she said almost nothing.
@@RobertDeMartin Sometimes we all have to take some chances like Jane Fonda did.
By the way: unmatched performance
Jane Fonda's performance was sublime, win very deserving, this work won her the Best Actress awards from allmovie critics groups in '71,including the prestigious NewYorkFilm Critic CircleBest ActressAward(runner ups that year for the NYFilmCriticsCircle award wereGenaRowlands&JulieChristie(for 2 great performances- McCabe&Mrs.Miller and alsoTheGo Between).Janewas smart&brave&spokeout against le illegal U.S.invasionof southern Vietnam& bombing northern Vietnam,U.S. interfering in theircivilwar!
Jane Fonda is a brilliant actress klute was a great movie .
Oh, my God! "that's the guy"... are you for real? That's Walter Matthau, a legend of comedy movies and one time Oscar winner!!! And yes, he was on Cactus Flower but is not why he's known for.
Oscar deserved!
XLIVth Academy Awards ceremonies were aired by NBC-TV Network in April, 1972. In fact, from 1971 thru 1975 NBC televised annual Academy Awards ceremonies
I’m proud of her bravery and conviction ❤️
she is the best!
Great actress. Looking so much like her father.
I'm in love with the 1972 Jane Fonda. One of the greatest of all time.
one of my all time favorite movies.
