I built an AMD rig about 10 years ago. I knew it wouldn't be as good as Intel but AMD was projected to go bankrupt so a few of us felt like we needed to make that sacrifice. Now I'm very pleased I did because AMD had just enough money to rise from the ashes and the CPU industry is fun again. They were very dark days when Intel stopped innovating due to a lack of competition.

Young whipper snappers in here :o) I go back about 22 years with pc. When AMD dropped the A64 they destroyed intel in gaming. Took intel a few years to finally come out with the Core 2 duo and caught back up. It has been back and forth for years as far as gaming goes. Whatever is king at time of build is what I go with lol. I remember that only a few years ago (2015) AMD were selling chips like the FX-8500 and FX-6300 and people were telling jokes about their GPUs being great room heaters. Now the reverse is true. In a few years people will be on about AMD's "venerable Zen architecture" and Intel will be where it's at again. To be fair, I used to see tech reviewers comparing an FX-6300 to a core i5 processor costing 3 times as much and declaring the AMD was trash because it wasn't as good as the intel and people should just "spend the extra" (easy to say when you're comparing review samples that you don't have to pay for!).
So far with Ryzen 7000 I like the onboard graphics (i'm not going to call it a GPU!). But the fact that the lowest TDP is given as 105watt is a concern. Keep in mind nobody (other than AMD!) has taken a close look at these chips I consider that a huge unresolved issue - it'll keep them firmly outside of the corporate space if they draw that frequently. I suspect it's just poor marketing and the system will only draw that in a desperate hail-mary situation but whether the average CTO will be able to assimilate that or not is another matter.

The Ryzen 7950X is showing just how fast AMD caught up to Intel with a very well designed and thought out solution. A 16c/32t CPU that boosts up to 5.7 GHz with the very optimized power usage is amazing. The 7950X is obviously a flagship workstation CPU that doesn't make sense for gaming purposes(the 7700X seems to be the sweet spot to me) but the same technology is used in the other 7-series Ryzens. Amazing feat by AMD.

So it does work for gaming. And i bought the 16 core so i can upgrade in 10 years again. I used my i7 4790K since 2020 when i bought my 5950X everyone told me the i7 4790K was overkill for gaming. I could upgrade to a 16 core cpu in 7 years time. They had to upgrade their cheaper i5's around 2017 already because it did not have threading so it simply would micro stutter in their games. So yeah. Flagships are just as good for gaming as for workflow.
If simply put i spend less money over the time from my i7 4790K to my 5950x than my buddies who bought a i5 4670 to a i7 8700k to a 5900x

  • @Tiki832
    @Tiki832 2 года назад +35

The thing AMD have been doing right since Zen 1 is to focus on efficiency first, then scale it up later as the underlining technology matures. It's a lesson both Intel and Nvidia thought they had much longer to wait until they needed to start to learn it.
Already we're seeing Nvidia GPUs in the same position Intel CPUs were a few years back.... they have the raw horsepower but they didn't really have the scalability behind it to take it much further without sweeping architectural changes, and so in order to keep appearances of staying ahead of AMDs offerings each generation they have to push their focus on raw horsepower harder and harder showing the cracks in terms of power consumption and iterative gains.
And lets be honest here, DLSS has saved Nvidia for a while now. What was meant to be a alternative Anti-Aliasing technology that was pretty flaky in results was quickly re-directed and re-marketed by Nvidia as a resolution scaling technology to obscure just how tight the performance gap between AMD and Nvidia now is, even in Real Time Ray Tracing usage.
Someone at Nvidia was clearly aware of what was happening and the position they would find themselves in across the next few generations due to the sheer time it would take to address the core architecture approach to their GPUs that they currently have adopted, and the decision to lean on software solutions as a crutch to try soften the blow was pretty smart.
But without a radical change in approach, it is only slowing the pace. Not changing the outcome

So, I've been back on a PC building kick since about Zen 2 launch and every time AMD knocks it out of the park, I'm kicking myself for not waiting. The constant progress and push they've been laying down since Zen 1 has been staggering.
Full disclosure; my first PC build was a AMD Athlon (Clawhammer, I think?) and it went for nearly 10 years of overclocking and bad case design before it croaked. I stayed with AMD as I couldn't afford Intel in the early 2010s. Entirely agreed. I’ve been with AMD since 2007, upgrading from an Intel Pentium 3. I upgrade to an AMD Phenom II X4 965, than in 2014, to an AMD FX-8350. Every upgrade, consisted in an immense performance leap for me, while not breaking the bank. I managed to save money and in November 2020 I basically built a new PC around a 5800X. My mind was blown yet again by the incredible performance of the new CPU and the new rig. So, if AMD continue on the same track, 3-4-5 years from now, depending on the workflow, I’ll build a new system, yet again, around an AMD cpu. The old FX-8350, is still kicking, doing it’s job, in the old PC, which I repurposed to an HTPC and gave it to my parents. It suits their needs 100%. So yeah, for me too, AMD, was there, exactly when I needed them to be, with what I needed, without the need to overspend, in regards to my financial possibilities at the given time, without having to make any sort of compromise . And no, I am not an AMD fanboy or a fanboy of any sorts. As a computer/laptop technician I have no favourites, I have to accomodate to my clients needs. But for me, AMD, in regards to CPU’s has been my daily driver for over 15 years. And I am not disappointed at all. To me it was and still is, the perfect balance, between price and performance and it entirely suits my needs.

Their will most likely always be leap frogging between both brands with CPU releases that edge out over the other. So, the new Intel CPUs are coming out shortly after and will probably beat the AMD, do that leap frogging cycle. The real kicker is AMD has been really kicking some ass the last 5+ years and is no longer the "compromise" and a lot of it has to do with the CEO (of course) but another is getting the Massive contracts to make millions of GPUs for Sony/Microsofts Next Gen consoles. On top of all that, so many PC gamers are switching to their great Price to Performance CPUs, GPUs, and Hardware. That brings in a shit ton of profits for AMD, which in turn can allows AMD to allocate way more resources into research and development for future products and we are definitely seeing the effects of that.

I'm so glad AMD is doing well and taking the lead. I switched from Intel for my 5900x and I've been so happy with the shift. I've always disliked the business practices of Intel and waited until tech increased so I could leave them for good. I went from a 7700k to 5900x and if I had it my way, I'd never buy from Intel again.
Intel did AMD dirty and has blatantly done shady stuff all the way back to the 90's. I'm not saying AMD are a bunch of angels themselves but they were definitely the under dogs trying to get their bone. Well they got it and now they're the big dawg. I hope the Radeon side of things kick off too and I can kick Nvidia to the curb.

I have zero actual need to upgrade anything in this PC, and am going to get a cheaper 5950x. It isn't just Intel. They just did that with RDNA. I have no idea why gamers are seemingly asleep enough to just blindly keep buying crappy RTX budget cards for phenomenal amounts of money when it's clearly a PoS, like the 3050. It's insane to me they're still charging nearly $400 for that crap and trying to justify it with "features" on a card too weak to even use those features at 1080p.
imho they've put the pressure on nVidia lately, which is why you're seeing such utterly insane power draws on Lovelace and Ampere these days, because that's a desperation move--one they should know well, given that AMD Radeon has done it back in the Fury-X tier days, which is exactly where I see nVidia now. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't keep charging outrageous prices. Like the GTX 1630 *could* be a not bad card, were it priced justifiably. I think neither of these brands can deal with the fact that they are now effectively the budget brands but with premium prices, whereas AMD is very self aware of being today's premium brand and I fully expect that to be the case in upcoming graphics cards.

Benchmarks are out there for raptor lake if you look. Single thread increase is 10% best case scenario. Most of the time single digits. So for people disabling E cores and doing ram tweaks, disappointing. Multicore is obviously better than 12th gen for applications that like it. There are no hidden boosts to these E cores. They are literally the same thing but twice as many. Efficiency is up. To be fair, multicore and efficiency are what Intel needed to work on most over 12th gen, and they did. It's a decent CPU. But the reality is it will compete with Z43D for top dog in a few months, and it will lose badly. V cache is adding 30% performance this time.

There are even rumors of Zen 4 coming to AM4, but one leaker i listen to says his sources say it's not very likely.
