Being a filmmaker doesn't mean you need to critique other films. 🙌

I think that's just it, find something that you like. It's why I adore RUclips. What I like about most people's things is the fact that they're genuine, which might be another way of saying homemade, but I lose contact with creators who get too big, to professional. I have no trouble finding things I like. I think this is amazing advice though and I think that the fact that you can't downvote a video anymore is evidence that the proprietors of this whole damn thing realize that hating on stuff just doesn't need anywhere good.
I like your advice. Wonderful as always. 💜

Man, loved your perspective on this. I usually leave a little thought on Letterboxd, and I generally try to be positive, but I've left somewhat negative reviews here and there and I just feel bad and end up deleting it half the time. ESPECIALLY as a filmmaker. Anyways, love the idea of saying at least one nice thing, or just saying nothing at all. Enough non-filmmakers are going to weigh in with their negativity, no reason for a filmmaker to join in on piling on to a fellow filmmaker.

I always feel bad leaving a negative review! It’s just not worth it to me.

Movies Are Cute! 😊 I like that. I'm not much for criticizing films, either. Even some Indie filmmakers, who I do not like personally, I still find something in their films that speaks to me. Even if it's a photo bombing seagull! Finding nuance in "bad films" is like a fun game. It's probably why I like the Joel Haver Oscars films so much. Finding beauty and funny things in those films was a great time for me. I just don't get the constant putting down culture of the internet, it's just not my style.

So true! I like liking things more than I like disliking things haha

This was a cool insight dude, I watch a movie every night and “review it”
But really it’s what I liked and didn’t like , and I try to dissect why I didn’t like it and why I did like it, I wanna know why they did something that I wouldn’t do and what I would do to make it better not just bash on that person, cause I think overly even if they are “bad” they still are good right ? They were a piece of work made from nothing and that’s cool af and that’s what even “big” filmmakers are trying to do ya know ?
Also I loved cobblestone, if I could buy it on dvd with commentary I would 100%. Everyone watch it right now 🎉

Ok. I hate to be the one to remind you, but I think there was one in particular that you could not find anything nice to say about when you and Brandon were doing your podcast "Did We Just Become Best Friends?" It escapes me which one it was, but I know it was Brandon's pic and you did not like it. LOL

Hahaha you’re so right! He’s really good at picking movies that I fail to see value in.
