Awesome project and the best formula. Take the old, showcase the skills and make the girl a runner. When ya can, add the loop. I love it and live vicariously through ya! Never stop/more please. Cheers!
Great looking machine! I didn't see the valve, or even suspect it the first time either. But then the mystery comes together, they rebuild it (truly impressive amounts of goop), mis-timed it, valve meets piston, retime it, won't start, up for sale. Nice job getting it done, enjoyed the video.
Yep I’m sure that’s exactly what happened.. must not of hit very hard as it was just a small bend. But on a 2 valve engine even the smallest bend there goes all the compression.
@@rockspowersports The blue color, good plastics, and nice Decals make up for it! (upper located shifter instead of the rediculous to use lower one on the Moto250) Well good job tearing it all down even the first time to see how things were, that'll be I'm sure super reliable long term, look forward to the showdown of the 90's beasts when they're both ready to go!
You’re absolutely right! I just went and looked at the video footage and now that I’m looking for a hit mark i can see it plain as day… oh well, that’s what happens when your rushing.
Same color as my 1987 big bear. It runs great for 37 years old. Going to do a full service on it and replace the tires this weekend. Also inspect the breaks and figure out what parts I need to order. I had it shipped across the country to my place, my dad took great care of it over the years so minimal repairs needed. It’s an old quad but has sentimental value to me. Maybe you could do a video on break inspection /repairs on your machine? Always enjoy your content 👍.
Now this reminds me of the quads i work on. Now where im from we have the "townies" and the "baymen" Im classified as a townie 30 minutes out and more is bayman. Now its a very strong prototype that baymen just don't know what they're doing with their quads. Every quad ive got from one just screams this video, picked up a pack of 4 quads from a fella about an hour out. There was a minibike that he said was running, he was pulling it over and it was real hard to pull over. He said it was compression.. it was a bent crankshaft on a weed Wacker motor. There was a pink kids quad, the head bolts weren't even tight on the thing, the head gasket was literally shattered somehow and he managed to strip the front ball joints. I got that one going like new. I bought a kingquad 300 that "wouldn't run right". Flicked the lights on and it was brand new. The regulator was bad. I mean its good deals because they don't know how to fix it but this was definitely a throwback. Very good work!
Thanks, Glad you enjoyed the video! Im sure we've all bought one of these beauty's at one time or another.. I had the same thing happen to my Suzuki quad runner 250! you could run it for a while then it would start losing power, flick the lights on and ran much better.. Must be a common problem with those, I think when I tested the running voltage at the battery it was close to 19-20Volts!!! Good thing it didn't fry any electronics.
@rockspowersports yup the old Suzukis are bad for their regulators. They're all i have around nowadays, got 6 in my yard. My pop got me into them, he has many himself aswell. I don't know how they don't fry anything. Doesn't even blow any fuses!
Another great informative video Rock thanks 😊 On my Suzuki king quad 300 4x4 i put gas stabilizer and seafoam in my gas and when i have to remove the carb it is always clean inside!
i always spray carb cleaner in head inlet and exhaust to check for leaky valves before I put the head back on, puddle it then look for flow around valves when closed.
I was hoping you were going to check the ring gap before slapping the piston back in. If it was 10 over they may have just put stock size rings back in it.
Hey brother. Actually, the older machines are nice to see. Even if they are sometimes rough. Just my opinion, but the new machines just don't have the feel of actual machinery the way the older ones did. They're all cvt drives, power steering, electric diff locks, completely shrouded in plastic. The old stuff, you had to shift everything manually, handle the steering on your own. You could see the running gear. It was basically a direct coupling from crankshaft to wheels(meaning all gears and shafts). Just my opinion. Either way, cool machine and cool video! Thanks bud.
It's just missing the part for the recoil that's the only way I could start mine because the electric starting didn't work and I didn't know how to fix it at that age
Maybe a little red silicone on the magnito case if the gaskets in rough shape I could see that but definitely not the head there's way too much compression and heat.
just my experience all these 350 heads are interchangeable no matter the part numbers... like u found just small differences in valve size and cams.. i have even used 400 yamaha heads like koidak/bigbear also most of any of these engines that look like syle are all the same heads the changes are in the rod and piston pin locations
@rockspowersports YUP! People try to tell me the $10-$15 per quart factory stuff is the best 🙄 Can't beat the price or availability! Don't have the guts to try in the sportster
I pay for the add free. It sucks but since I watch you tube more than TV I think it's worth it. It's really nice not having commercials Another awesome video too. Thank you.

Another awesome video Rock! Great work! Thanks!😊
Heck yea man almost hour long video.. nice! Awesome job!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Brought her back to life !
Absolutely!
Lot of work! Way to bring stuff back from the dead. Awesome stuff keep going brother.
Great video love to see these old girls come back to life
Right on. Smoke is just probably crap in the exhaust, and the colder temperatures. She sounds good!
damn,i either i am on you tube to much or just the right time at night to get to see rocks vids when they just come out!!!either way, lucky me!!!
I only started watching him recently (maybe 3 weeks ago), and I've had that happen 3 times now. 😂
@@tin2001 he is a good guy to watch!!!
Sounds like a win win either way haha
My favourite RUclips channel, he’s got wicked content
I'm impressed...yet again!! Wow!
Sweet! I get to learn new tricks and be entertained at the same time!
Like it cool quad
Puff the Magic Dragon rides again!
Awesome project man, thanks for bringing us along.

Rock, I really enjoy all of your videos, thanks for sharing all of your information and knowledge.
Thanks, I appreciate that!
You could see the mark on the valve when you first took the head off, practise makes perfect.
You’re absolutely right! I just went and looked at the video footage and now that I’m looking for a hit mark i can see it plain as day… oh well, that’s what happens when your rushing.
Nicely done. I'm doing sportsman 500 and having some issues. With it not starting unless I put my hand over the air intake.
Hopefully just some carb issues.

87 First Year of the Big Bear! Glad you're keeping the old girl running! I may do a tune up video on this one in the future.
Love the rin con videos
More coming.

Come on Rock, we all knew you were gonna tear that thing apart.
Let’s go!
i always spray carb cleaner in head inlet and exhaust to check for leaky valves before I put the head back on, puddle it then look for flow around valves when closed.
You should restore these to like new! You have the knowledge and work ethic.. definitely would be a video I’d like to see.
I’d recommend a inline spark tester a lot easier then trying to see the spark on the plug and for like 5 bucks well worth the money
You have soo many quads you could rent em and Maybee advertise tv trail riding ?
I’d show up fast and recommend to friends for Maine ATV EXCURSION
Rock all your long time viewers knew you weren’t going to half a$$ the repairs and would fix it the correct way lol
I mean to be honest, I did.. The cylinder head really should be rebuilt or replaced but hey she runs!
That body style was beautiful and then they replaced it with that ugly ladybug looking body style round headlight😂
I was hoping you were going to check the ring gap before slapping the piston back in. If it was 10 over they may have just put stock size rings back in it.
work on any sports quads like the older 400exs had a couple growing up only quad i would ride
Not too often, mostly utility Atv and sxs. I do have a Polaris predator 500 here I gotta tackle someday.

I love the older machines, they certainly have character compared to the new ones. Thanks, and glad you enjoyed the video!

Good job!
I bet after you ran it and got everything hot and seated in and oil every where i bet those leak down numbers will improve!
The insane thing to me is that in the early 90's these were full size ATV's. Now by today's standards these are pretty damn small. Insane.
2 vintage must have worked on this one. He cleans nothing, and he loves the goop.
I'll never understand why he does that. It's cheap for parts washer.
When I first saw the thumbnail I thought it was a terrapro! Never seen that color on the big bears
My neighbor has a Terrapro, I’d like one with a few attachments
It's just missing the part for the recoil that's the only way I could start mine because the electric starting didn't work and I didn't know how to fix it at that age
some Yamahas require you to pull hand brake for starter to work
Try some BW-100 on yhat button worked on my bike
Looks like Richard Petty Blue
Always liked the looks of those Blue Yamaha’s.
My dad had a big bear! It got stolen in 2004 😭😭
Oh no! Sorry to hear that.
If any of the big (Japanese) manufacturers released a clone of that quad for 3k-4k it would fly off the shelf.
I’d buy a new one for sure! I don’t need all the fancy stuff that the new ones come with.
I could see a wear/contact mark on the valve when you pulled them the first time.
Not trying to be a jerk, but skipped vid because volume was too low......usually a HUGE fan
I guess it would be interesting to see if the head gasket leaked with the silicone!
Curious , why didn't you check end gap to check wear on rings ?
Maybe a little red silicone on the magnito case if the gaskets in rough shape I could see that but definitely not the head there's way too much compression and heat.
Absolutely, I’m not saying I don’t use the stuff but it’s certainly not good to overdo it..

If you think the kawi has a low gear you need to get your self a suzuki king quad 300! 15 gears baby
I’ve had the 250 quadrunner with the 15gears, amazing what those little things can do!
Howdy rock have a great day
Thanks Jonathan, you as well!
I watch "2vintage" and he puts gasket maker on everything. Every new gasket and today he put it on O-rings which were brand new! OMG
Nice
I feel bad you need a hand with the camera.
Some people should just put the wrenches down.
Where do you order the parts you need for quads?
Arkansas Waven
Must’ve used the blue silicone to match the plastics haha
Mustie1 (Quote): We do it right, because we do it twice!!!
Im early on this one
Na
Right! Earlier than me.. just had someone dropping off a wheeler so couldn’t look at the comments.
@@rockspowersportshopefully we get a video from what ever was dropped off lol
@adrienfortin4411 One of these days but they aren’t in any hurry.. Sportsman 800 dropped off this time.
Rock do you sell parts?
I usually don’t sell too much. What are you in need of?
I am looking for a display for a 2009 Yamaha grizzly 550, mine got bricked
Unfortunately no I don’t have the Speedo display for the 550/700 grizzly.
People give me shit for using the Rotella 5w40 in my polaris 😝
It's not a wet clutch 🙄
Rotella T6 5w40 is wet clutch safe, I use the stuff in all my machines.
@rockspowersports YUP!

Way too much advertising even to watch your videos anymore. RUclips is going downhill my friend.
The longer the videos’s the more RUclips adds advertisements. I’m guessing They are pushing the paid version that’s ad free
I pay for the add free. It sucks but since I watch you tube more than TV I think it's worth it. It's really nice not having commercials
