Peter Gabriel...White Shadow = GENIUS Justin. His imagination, songwriting ability...the groove, the subtle tones of light and shade...pure bliss imho. This is a very underrated album imo Justin. Yes ,the Lamb does come to mind...that voice hmmm ❤❤❤
@@JustJP It was in Italy in the cities and riding bikes in Tuscany. Needless to say it was great and I feel privileged to be able to do this! Thanks for asking!
On original LP pressings of the album, the audio of "White Shadow" continued into an endless 'locked groove'. I remember this on the vinyl version I had way back.
I still have mine but it only works on a manual turntable that doesn’t lift automatically. I was going to make a 90 minute cassette tape of it for meditation but always forget.
This track was great on the vinyl. The synth drone at the end of the song played right through to the needle lifting up at the end of the side. Cool stuff
My favourite song off of Scratch. I LOVE "White Shadow" (especially the way Fripp's guitar whines after every time PG sings the words, "She comes out like a white shadow"). Thanks, as always, for another "deep cut" PG song review!
I love the early Gabriel stuff, especially the first 4 albums. He's allowed his own ideas to come out rather than being held back by the other members of Genesis who, as Steve Hackett found out, wanted to head off on another path. He also surrounds himself with great musicians to carry his ideas. Great song.
One of the best songs on the album and one of his very best songs. Underrated as hell, awesome track. Glad you came back to do Scratch, you need to finish Security when you finish this one. Security (PG4) has amazing moments.
This song is the star of Scratch, for sure. As soon as I saw Justin posted this review, I dropped everything and had to immediately go on the journey with him. I love everything about the instrumentation of this song. I, like Justin, love how it does have a Genesis feel to it, and gives those what-if thoughts to what Genesis would've sounded like had Peter stayed.
Always a super Like for Peter Gabriel. Come on Just... give us and give yourself the pleasure of reacting to Jarre's Arpegiator. You won't regret it and you might even consider taking a trip to China. Hugs. 😛
@@robboaron It would be nice to make the 6 new songs. I have insisted to Just several times but I have not achieved my goal. Night in Shanghai is also interesting. Orient expres is the first song I heard by Jean Michel Jarre. That's why I am very fond of that topic. I hope to achieve a review by 2024, but I have to figure out how to get Just to do it hehehe. A hug.
Hi Justin. Dave from Up Around The Bend. The stand-out track on this album, and one of the best he's ever done, imho. So brilliantly atmospheric, creepy lyrics (which I've never really worked out), and I love the way Peter sings here, as if he's also spooked by the lyrics. Yes, echoes of The Lamb, especially side 1. And then Robert Fripp's solo in the outro is the icing on the cake. P.S. my song ref Up Around The Bend is by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
This is hard to describe but on vinyl, this was the last song on the side. There was a special audio groove that was cut into the space between the normal audio grooves and the actual label in the center. The result was you would hear sound uninterrupted until the turntable arm picked up. During this time Peter was working on AI. He talked to me about a machine where you'd input an artist's entire catalog, and out would come new music generated by a computer in the artists' style. That was in the early 80's. Bet he wouldn't be so hot for the idea now.
And this completes the superior side of this album. Not a weak song on this side. Love this song... what a mood.. great instrumentation and Gabriel's voice is just the right amount of mystery and menace.
When I was 16 So just came out, and God I love that album. Shortly after I bought Scratch. Like a totally different artist. I didn’t enjoy it at first, but it grew on me. Every track is great imo! Thanks
Interesting to find that the "synth" is a guitar with Frippertronics. (I've heard of this, listened for it, and never heard it, so now I know what burrow to stick my nose into next time.)
When I had the LP of this album, if the needle didn't pick itself up that last bit would continue playing endlessly -- or until you picked up the needle.
Definitely my favorite song from this album. The musical arrangements are complex for a song with a rather conventional structure. On my 80s vinyl version, the final synthesizer sound does not end abruptly like in this version. The sound is maintained without ever dying out until the groove ends its trajectory in the center of the vinyl.
The pinnacle of a great album IMO, and endlessly lyrically fascinating. I've no idea what Peter was writing about, though for me it always makes me think of the near-disaster of Apollo 13 on its way to land on the earth's "white shadow", the moon. Fripp's guitar work behind the vocals and on the 70-second solo from 4:10 (not a synth!) just adds the perfect edge.
Makes me think of the late 70s TV show "White Shadow" about a white coach and an inner city basketball team, though I'm fairly certain that's not what Gabriel was singing about.
Robert Fripp plays a killer guitar solo and you never mentioned him. Btw, it’s no surprise he chose Tony Levin to reform King Crimson. They both played on the 1977 tour and this album so he knew what Tony was capable of. He is playing fretless here Justin.
I always thought the White Shadow was the moon. Like it’s always there witnessing the dark and the light, eternal and non judgmental. Echoes of a Genesis track from Trespass, although that’s tenuous. Soon: Exposure with Gabriel Levin and Fripp later in the album ❤❤❤❤ Justin, when you hit that song try to say which of Squire or Levin is best. It’s a trick question 😂🎉
I think you should listen again. I think you were so honed in on the bass and the hits that missed that miraculous guitar solo. Fripp exploring the length, depth and persistency of a note is nearly lobotomizing! There are points where it sounds like he's propelling the notes through a tube seemingly altering what is possible. That plucking on the intro is nothing to sneeze at either.
Yes, it is the best track on the album and side one is better than side two, but you do have Perspective and Exposure to come - the latter featuring Frippertronics, Tony Levin funky goodness and polyrhythms. Hell, yeah!

Justin, one of the synth parts you mention isn't a synth part, because it's Robert Fripp on electric guitar (as well as acoustic). I would have thought you would have recognized his playing and his usual tortured sounds. Indeed, musically it is close to certain atmospheres heard on The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway ! Great track.
When this album came out, I found it a disappointment compared to his first solo album. "White Shadow" was the only song on it that I really cared for.
I honestly believe that this is one of pg's best songs. Hypnotic, poetic and just damn beautiful.
Robert Fripp's contribution to that album is not always obvious. But in this one, his guitar shines.
Thank you Peter for helping me make my life a little better.

Happy to :)
Did you catch him on his current tour Justin??....absolutely phenomenal.....

Guitar solo by Fripp is fantastic.
The Mysterious Title of this Song had strong allure. A United States T.V. Series soon surfaced, also called, The White Shadow, in November of 1978.

How good is this track!. Mine and most people's favourite on the album. I get what you mean about the "Lamb..." too, same vibe.
The way I interpreted the song is: tourists in the desert on coaches out of fuel. The White Shadow is the heat of the sun.

lead guitar by Robert Fripp of King Crimson and the synth player, Larry Fast, puts out all-synth albums under the name Synergy. They are great.

It’s the best track on this album
This track feels so Genesis-y to me, and that's probably why I like so much. The romantic mood has a lot to do with it.
I believe this and 'Mother of Violence' are the two best songs on the album.
Robert Fripp plays a killer guitar solo and you never mentioned him. Btw, it’s no surprise he chose Tony Levin to reform King Crimson. They both played on the 1977 tour and this album so he knew what Tony was capable of. He is playing fretless here Justin.
Nice to rediscover that album. Better than what I remembered. The contrast with the 1980 and 1982 albums was not to its advantage. Good vs AMAZING!
