  • As the saying goes - "Only The Strong Survive". Well, these RTSs were in the OCTA fleet for 28 years ( 1980 - 2/2008 ). I personally loved driving these. It was a sad site to see them go. However, a few non-profit & charter organization have saved a few of these buses. Anywho, the photos and recording are by me. The bus in question is # 3053 Not In Service on a Deadhead trip. It has a DD 6V92TA DDEC IV reliabilt engine. Orginally these buses had Detroit Diesel 8V71 engines & were slopeback. Many modifications were made to these buses...Including sliding windows, improved HVAC system, rooftop exhaust system, telma retarder, and Allen Bradley Starting system.

The Only Bus That Was Built Before It's Time And Outsold. Outlast. Withstand Anything That You Throw At It Just To Be Forcefully Retired By These Ugly Lowfloor Buses That We Ride Today. RTS Forever. Sunrise 1977- Sunset 2007. RIP.

whole heartedly agree! Wichita Transit drove 1980 RTS II 40ft. Most were still running rush hour svc up until 2002

Prior to about 1986, these buses used a Detroit Diesel 8V71 variant known as the 8V71TAE (TAE = turbo aftercooled emissions).

@Spectacular66 - oh yes...this was definitely one of my favorite RTS. I would ask for this bus everyday. All the drivers would pause and look at me like "what the hell.you wanna drive that ?".

I remember those smoky exhausts well on all the MBTA RTS'es that had the bumper exhaust. Fleet #s 8400-8599 built by GMC had them with the 6V71. 8600-8799 either were built with the roof exhaust or retrofitted on a rebuild, but they still bellowed smoke from those 6V92TA's. But those 2 stroke DD buses are long gone now, all except a rare few scrapped years ago. Even the later 4 stroke DD Series 50 RTS are gradually being whittled down, being scrapped out too.

Haha yeah I MBTA good ol days I remember always catching the 134 on one of the 8400 or 8500 series. The 6V71T was a rare to use in an 1985 rts bus. And the cream colored pillars

I wish I saw these more when they were slope back and powered by a 8v71, but I still enjoyed then like this.

I do not know about the drive, but I remember my mother took us on a Blue Line trip to Long Beach in 1992, and LBT still had a 35 foot RTS01 or 03 with an 8v71, and when this bus took off, it looked pretty quick. It had it own sound a little different from a New Look with the same engine.

I also love there roof top exhaust, SCRTD/LACMTA did put roof exhaust into there GMC RTS04 and until they ordered their TMC RTS06 in the late 80, all there RTS had exhaust shoot strait under the rear bumper. Just think of a smoky 6v92 exhaust being shoot into your face.

How were these to drive with the 6V92TA compared to the 8V71??? I've read places the 6V92TA were as powerful as the 8V71, but had much better fuel economy
