It’s the peek out from behind the lamp that made this entire sequence.

That's also her deftly doing her job: "We really can't fight this because, really, there's nothing totally incorrect here, and the best thing to do is make light of the one thing that can be made light of."

That book quote is just so many levels of unnecessary dickishness. Toby's a bit prickly and mumbles a bit? Okay, kind of personal and unnecessary, but it's establishing his character and, well, it's hard to argue, there's maybe a case for including that. "Inner, bitter darkness"? Okay, getting *very* personal. Bringing up that Toby's marriage ended? Well, it's public record I suppose, but still, must we really go there, we have to ask. Claiming that Toby's personality *caused* the end of his marriage? Well, that's just getting below the belt. But to then go on to speculate that Toby might have had *other* marriages we don't know about that his personality *also* caused the end of? That's just reaching a whole new stratosphere of spite.
And what makes this guy incompetent on top of being a jerk is that, if he'd wanted to make Toby and the President look ridiculous, he could have accurately noted that they were having an argument while playing crazy golf of all things.

Your comment is an interesting mix of sounding like you believe all of this is real as you analyze the characters and even try to get into the head of the author of the book, and then the acknowledgment that Toby is actually a "character" in a TV show. Really intrigues me. You wrote a lot there and really thought about it - and the way you wrote about it seems to indicate that you are unhappy with the imaginary author for being mean to Toby (an imaginary character in a TV show). I think you are far more interesting that this show!

@@brians9508 Obviously I know Toby is not a real person and am not angry on his or anyone's behalf (I'm actually more amused by it than anything else). However, I just assumed everyone else watching and reading this both already knows that and would be willing to give me the benefit of the doubt for not being either a complete moron or insane, and would know that I was just writing from an 'in-universe' perspective to point out the multiple layers of a joke because it's quicker and easier than repeatedly and unnecessarily spelling out that Toby is a fictional character being attacked in a not-real sense by another fictional character. As, well, happens all the time when discussing fiction. Thanks for not doing that and being an unnecessarily condescending jerk though!
