In the novel Catalyst, a prequel to the movie, it is written that Krankic knew everything about the stations construction. All details. Galen Erso wrote him a memo that the reactor emitted too much heat. And therefore suggested several solutions to fix this issue. Some options would take too much time to implement. and because they were already behind schedule, Krennic took Ersos bait and personally signed for the cheapest and fastest solution: the thermal exhaust pipe. That was Ersos trap. And in the novelisation to the movie Krennics last thoughts before his death was exactly this weakness. The pipe that went down from the surface to the reactor core. He knew in his last moment that Tarkin wouldn't succeed in the end. And that only he, Krennic could take care of it.

Krennic is the embodiment of the sin of pride. He is obsessed with receiving praise for his work on the Death Star and believes that his work entitled him to the attention of Emperor Palpatine, even though, as Vader points out, the Death Star was far from a success. Not to mention, he shifts blame for his failures with the Death Star by saying that Tarkin suggested the test. While that is true, Krennic still sung praises of the Death Star’s killing capability and was willing to throw Tarkin under the bus, once he realized that it wasn’t the success he hoped it would be. At the end of the day, Krennic wishes to be praised for his work in the Empire and can’t handle anybody taking away the praise he believes he deserves or pointing out the flaws in his decisions.

Honestly, I see it the other way around. He’s the only imperial in the room with a pair of balls. The Death Star was a success, that only had one flaw due to sabotage in the construction by Galen Erso. Krennic is prideful, yes, but not without reason. Tarkin stole his work because Tarkin suggested it when the plans were initially from the CIS. When everything goes to hell, Krennic doesn’t hide. He picks up a damn gun and fixes the problem himself.

Krennic does take action when things go south, but, at the same time, him pointing out to Vader that Tarkin suggested the test when Vader pointed out the problem of the Death Star definitely shows a side of Krennic that is unwilling to take blame for his actions when they blow up in his face.

I think Director Krennic was a competent imperial officer of the ISB, Though yes he did have his flaws but he sure wasn't a coward. He had the needs to get thing sdone
