My mom grew up in and her whole side of the family is from Sullivan County NY and Northern PA. Some crazy logging stories from down there. My Great Great Grandpa was a Teamster in the late1800s and turn of the century. He drove horse carts of lumber along the trails in the Catskills from PA to NY and back down again.

During a pretty bad case of insomnia, I happened upon this. I don't think I have ever watched and listened to a better video-audio combination that described the lifestyle I would enjoy till the day I die. If a man could have a theme song, I would be honored to label my character with this amazing sound. Thank you very much Van Wagner.

One of the most beautiful forests I ever saw was in Scotland. I was driving from Inverness to Ullapool and came across some amazing stands of timber. I was singing in pubs all over Scotland with my buddy RJ. We had a great time! thanks for writing.

My son and I we’re out at the Philmont Scout Ranch this last week. Part of our trek took us through the historical logging camp, Pueblano. The show at the staff camp included skits and a number of songs. One of the songs seemed super familiar, but I couldn’t place it. I kept singing that catchy tune as we hiked through the remainder of the trek. When I finally got service back at base camp I looked up the lyrics and found out why the song was so familiar…it was cousin Van’s “Cross Cut Saw”! Hearing your song’s chorus being sung by 50+ Scouts in the forested mountains of New Mexico was surreal. Your musical talent made an amazing trip even more special. Thank you!!!

I was at Philmont about a month ago. They sang this song in the opening campfire - I guess they stole it away from Pueblano. It was so catchy that I looked it up right away. I've learned to play it on mandolin and have called it as a tune at a local bluegrass/trad music jam that I go to sometimes in Roswell, GA. Love this song!

One of the best lumberjack ballads ever written, I can hear my great-grandparents singing this in Iowa and Kansas when they had to clear the land after the Civil War. I sing it all the time with my family and my daughter loves it so much!

I always dream of becoming as good as the old lumberjacks. I'm gonna try to scrounge up a felling saw and send it off to a filer after I restore it, and I have two 1950's double bit axes I'm gonna put handles to. Both I ground thin with a file and honed razor sharp with a stone. After that I need some tall timber. :)

I Love this song. I think it was one of the first of Van's songs that I heard. It struck a chord with me because I am interested in certain of the hand tools used by our ancestors. I have several crosscut saws and have taught myself how to use an axe to fell and buck trees with. Here in Central OK we don't have the large trees that other parts of the US do.
