Much as I enjoyed Stackpole's Rogue Squadron books, it was Alston's Wraith Squadron books that really blew me away. I loved the comedy, the villains of Zsinj and Melvar are incredibly quotable and entertaining and Alston portraying Chrono depression through Ton Phanan so flawlessly moves me every time I read Wraith Squadron, Iron Fist and Solo Command.
Oh two minor corrections, Zsinj is pronounced just as you would singe but with a Z so Zin J. And Krennel isn't trying to build a Death Star in Isard's Revenge, Isard framed him so the New Republic would focus on taking him down. When he hears about "His" Death Star he's confused and outraged because he DIDN'T have such a project lol

"Zinge"? I much prefer my made up pronunciation 😆

I’ve always felt like the Xwing series is set up perfectly for adaption as a to show with each book stretching over an ark with 2 arks per season. Even being able to then flush out the campaign against Zsinj more with the potential to keep the rogues story going during campaign entering into more of a mentorship role

I think it would work well! I was going to make a pitch video where I talk about how I think Rogue Squadron would work as a film/TV show. Maybe one day!

I read the Rogue/Wraith novels obsessively as a 11/12yo who had just discovered SW thanks to Ep1, loved them on a re-read 20 years later this year especially the Wraith books, I also read the comics earlier this year and didn't quite get into them but your other video makes me want to read them again at some point.
Looking forward to your pitch video, I have my own ideas so interested to see how it compares!

That's awesome, thanks so much for the comment! On balance, I prefer the novels. I prefer prose anyway, so I don't think that's a sign of anything other than my own subjectivity :D The comics really are fun, though. And worth a read if you just want to pick them up cheap in the Humble comics bundle.

Hey Bro! I'm LITERALLY a person who loves these two books so much that this whole "Kathleen Kennedy Rogue Squadron" situation has driven me to dedicate my writing energies in 2024 into a screenplay adaptation of these two books as a "Rogue Squadron" fan film script, exactly based on this idea. I'm plotting it all out on Scrivener now! Great videos! would love to chat about this stuff if you'd like!

Will you ever consider doing a video about the league of extraordinary gentlemen comics(vol 1 & 2,century,tempest,black book and nemo trilogy)?.Good video also will you ever touch the modern disney star wars comics universe.

That's a good question. I don't have any plans to talk about TLOEG. I've got a LOT on my backlog which I'll cover, Alan Moore is definitely on there, but perhaps in a way you might not expect.

These books are fantastic, and I wish Patty Jenkins got her chance to make the movie she wanted. Star Wars Top Gun is a dream movie of mine.

Yeah, same! I have a third video in this series planned, which was me pitching my ideas for Patty Jenkins' film. But it kinda felt like people weren't sharing my enthusiasm so I lost the bug for it!

Oh, well if it’s any consolation I’m VERY interested in all Rouge Squadron media. I read all the novels, but I had never heard of the comics. I’m reading them now, thanks!

How come you didn’t talk about mercy kill, is it just that it takes place after fate of the Jedi and that is way too much context to explain.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  6 месяцев назад

Yeah it's exactly that. Mercy Kill is a cool book, but it's pretty removed from the continuity and is kind of a standalone story, in a different section of the EU. Good eye for spotting it being missing, though!

It’s impressive (and appreciated) how well you are able to convey the overall themes, top-level plot, and the interstitial elements that combines the novels without going into major spoilers. And I’m not even spoiler averse-I went into this expecting to know every major plot point and have the story spoiled, but instead, you gave *just enough* info to explain the series and offer hooks to entice possible new fans to read the books themselves. That’s a hard balance to strike and you nailed it. Awesome stuff as always, my dude.

Just a minor correction: Rogue Squadron was first published in 1996. The novels were all published between '96 and '99.
Great video, though. Got me wanting to take a dive back into the original EU... once I'm done plumbing the depths of the original Marvel Comics run
