Sarge's drone must have been made by the same company that made that radio DeKiller used in 2-4. "For all your overly expressive yet anonymous long distance communication needs!"
Now I’m imagining DeKiller crafting and selling expressive mechanical toys, if he’s retired from his main profession.
To be fair I don't think sarge is all that far
Apollo: "I don't even know what my mother looks like"
To be fair, neither did she.
8:30
Hold up, Daddy Dhurke is *YOUNGER* than Datz?!
Couple of Dad Bros here.
Could even be just months apart
Datz seems like he'd be the kind of fun uncle you love as a kid who you find less funny and more depressing as you get older.
So, just to keep a tally on Apollo's day so far, he's been reunited with his estranged foster father, been roped into helping him retrieve a Khura'inese relic that'll help the Defiant Dragons' revolution move forward, learned that the person tasked with studying the Orb is dead, met an egotistical politician who claims the Orb is actually a family relic of his (and who also has one of the strangest hairdos I've seen yet, with that pompadour styled like a ribbon-tied scroll), reunited with Datz Are'bal for the first time in years, and got shot at by, before making friends with, a drone being piloted by a militaristic shut-in, who also happens to be the late Doctor Buff's kid.
And believe me when I say we're just getting started...
Don’t forget his promotion to Corporal! 👍🏻
And get a picture of his deceased biological father.
Jeez... That's one hell of a way to start a case!
Good thing someone is taking notes on all of this for her.
This case goes HARD with everything it throws at you. I love it.
First thing before talking to Sarge, you should present the picture to Sarge again. It's not necessary, but gives a bit of easy to miss dialogue that's very touching.
Present the badge again, too! There's new dialogue there as well!
"There's lockpicking videos on RUclips. .... N-Not that I watched them! (sweating)" - Lucahjin
That's a click on one, two is binding...
@@tehesprite502 Ah, good old LPL
This is the lock picking lawyer-
Eat your hamburgers, Apollo.
Man, Sargeant Buff is such a great character and we've only just met. You already start with fun and expressive gimmick of the drone and military vernacular. But then you learn of Buff's tragic past and you just want to rally behind the kid. And how Apollo relates his own experiences and losses to help support Buff, man that's great
Ooh, that golden "airplane" in the background of the study is a famous Out Of Place Artifact or OOP Art. It was found in South America and was made hundreds (or more) years before airplanes were invented.
The snack Sarge brought out at the end is indeed Dorayaki, it’s 2 flat pieces of dough akin to pancakes with red bean paste sandwiched in the middle. But green tea and burgers sounds like a much tastier meal
Easily recognisable by any doraemon fans as his favourite food 😌
It does have a passing resemblance to burgers, in all fairness.
Everyone rise for the honourable Paul Atishon (spelt Ah Tis shone). The totally not referencing Shinzo Abe the Japanese prime minister at the time.
Rip Shinzo Abe
Oh, his grandfather is ah-bey. I thought that was a localization thing where his grandpa was an actually great politician named after Abe Lincoln.
Well let's not discard the Lincoln possibility yet, considering that Abe Atishon was a more beloved politician. I'm also going to avoid discussing Japanese politics, considering that I actively try to avoid my own country's politics for the sake of my mental health.
How did you guess I was American?
@@TriforceWisdom64 Actually knowing what Shinzo Abe's grandfather was like makes it uncomfortable for that random man to say Paul doesn't compare to his grandfather.
@@MrMike855To be exact, according to developer notes, Paul is a direct reference to what a lot of the working man thought of Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and his grandpa is pronounced Ah-bey so no it’s not a localization thing, this was carried over from the Japanese text.
I think the one who said all this was the head developer for the games and spinoffs after AJ, Takeshi Yamazaki who was fired after this game.
I like how every Ace Attorney game has that one character where you know they're a total scumbag the second they first appear. Redd White, Richard Wellington, Furio Tigre, Jacques Portsman, Blaise Debeste, Florent L'Belle, and now Paul Atishon!
I guess Apollo Justice is the only game without any characters who don't try to hide the fact that they're villains (the closest is Wocky Kitaki, but he's not a villain, just a big jerk)
I actually had some hope for Furio Tigre back when he appeared, before he turned out to be an even worse person than expected. It would be fun to have a Wario to Phoenix's Mario hanging around.
@@BrazillianCara At least he lives on through Phoenix's alt costume in this game.
I feel like Daryan comes closer than Wocky
@@quinnviandsej I dunno, Daryan at least tried to act friendly. ...Then again, he did make his huge ego pretty clear from the beginning, so I guess he would come closer than Wocky, who was an abrasive idiot from the beginning but was actually a decent person on the inside
Honestly, Wocky is just a dumb 19 y/o, I knew people his age way more abrasive than him. Felt more like a troubled kid than an active jerk to me.
Also, I think Roger was the bigger "immediate total scumbag" than Paul, Paul is at least… funny so far, with how arrogant he is. Lol.
Paul wants to make Kurain great again.
There, I said it.
It's right there on the panel to the right, only worded differently.
Wow,
TWO Dads!
"Lucah, how come you get to have TWO dad senpais?"
I love how the music immediately shifts from the melancholy Detention Center theme to Datz's goofy theme. Dude really feels like the slightly more composed version of Larry Butz
Ya, cause at least Datz is experienced in gorilla tactics, paragliding, hunting/gathering food, and stealth.
It's unwise to underestimate his Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, or Proficiency. And where he might be lacking in Intelligence, he has reasonable Wisdom to make up for it.
And he is loyal to the Defiant Dragons, almost to a fault. He morns fallen brothers & sisters, he risks his neck multiple times to do what needs to be done, and he strives for a free & equitable Kura'in.
Larry has trouble dedicating himself to one subject of art.
Datz dedicated his all to political reform.
Knowing Datz, I think it's more likely that Dhurke just put in "1,2,3,4,5" as the luggage combination :D
"That's the kind of combination an idiot would have on his luggage!" - Dark Helmet
Or "1,1,1... er, 1!"
@@Warrior_of_Fire "That's amazing! I've got the same combination on my luggage!" - President Skroob
"Heard this case is kinda long" -- that would be a bit of an understatement. Turnabout Revolution is by far the longest case in the series, even counting cases from The Great Ace Attorney. By my estimate it's in the ballpark of 1 1/2 to 2 times as long as the finale cases of JfA, T&T, and Investigations 2. And it's like half of the length of this game.
I was 18 when I played this game the year it came out in the West. Now I'm a year older than Atishon is in this game. Man oh man...
Kinda funny that we're dealing with Paul Atishon while we just had elections over here in Germany
Always an election somewhere
This game came out in 2016, during which a certain American election happened
AND it's an election year in the USA.
@@LumenInFusco remember games take several years of development. Always an election somewhere. This character is supposedly based on Shinzo Abe
Sarge is a really fun character, and they only get better as the case progresses.
*He. Some overweight manchild who was turned down by the recruiter who just plays FPS games all day, like CS:GO, RS6, CoD, Battlefield, etc. One of those guys who says "I was almost in the Marines!"
@@neo-didact9285 Either you're being deliberately ironic, or you've never played this game.
Spoilers :D
@@ImperfectXIII I have, and Sarge is just some fat bald neckbeard who rages every time he loses a ranked match and throws his controller. He uses a drone because he's in his 30s and still in child mode. He thought he was all that in high school but was rejected by his local recruiters.
Knowing that Lucah's gone through a Steven Universe phase but still pronounces palanquin wrong hurt a bit.
For real, did she tune out entirely during the Trial on Homeworld?
Any self-respecting Ace Attorney would have rewatched that episode a few times.
Dorayaki is the bean pancakes/hamburgers 😊
Dhurke is basically the king of Dad jokes as you have seen from investigating with him.
The difference between him and Moe Curls is that he knows when to be seriously and he’s got a personality outside of dad jokes and puns.
31:58 This could also explain why Apollo was so cold to Dhurke when he first came to visit. Obviously a big piece of it could come from the fact that he didn’t call or try to visit for all those years, but it could be deeper than that. It’s possible that Apollo felt uncomfortable having an adopted father in the first place, especially one who was a wanted criminal. The kid never knew his real mother and father, but had to be raised by this total stranger who took him in, and just accept that (obviously he moved to America though at some point, but that’s different.)
I can’t entirely relate since I don’t really know too many people who were adopted or put in foster care. But I can kind of relate because I’ve already gone through a stepfather; as a kid, it always bothered me when he tried to act like an authority figure to me, because I felt like he didn’t have the right to do that (he ended up being a jerk anyway and my mom divorced him.) But I do currently have a stepmother as well, and while I do think of her as a second mom, I think of her like that in a good way, because rather than acting like an authority figure all the time, she’s actually really nice, and takes great care of me and my family.
It’s ironic how Sarge who has about the funniest way to talk to him, has one of the most heartbreaking stories
Man, hearing Apollo talk about how he doesn't know what his mother looks like just makes me so frustrated with Phoenix for not telling him!! I know he's supposedly got his reasons, but come on, man!!!
Buff’s kid is 100% a Hearts of Iron IV player lol
Questioning Sarge would probably have been easier if Apollo realized he could hide behind Arahabaki back there whenever he's about to get shot.
8:43 ... Wait, I never bothered to check Datz' age. That goober's older than me?!😆 I swear... Ages in this game are fucking weird.
Apollo: "I never met my mother, I wonder if she's still alive..."
Trucy: "I know your pain, after losing my father I wish I could meet my mother..."
Phoenix: "These kids are funny"
And we are introduced to my favorite character in this case, Sgt Buff. I can say he is quite a fun little character and, at the same time, I also do feel for him.
We've barely started the case and it's already dishing out some very heavy emotional stuff
I already know this case is very good, but I didn't remember these details, like Sarge's story
Real excited to see how the rest of the case goes, can't wait for the gasps to start lol
I find it funny how people always comment on Apollo’s devil horn hairs, because at some point I realized Trucy has the same exact hair tufts, just smaller. Must be a Gramarye thing.
The only likable thing about Paul is his theme song...
there's also *that* animation.
1:23 That Abe Shinzo reference..RIP
Works for America too because we love our own Abe as well!
Well, I dunno if it was Shinzo Abe. The guy still lives when this game was made iirc
Dhurke is the Lockpicking Lawyer! A click on one…nothing on two…
I remember being confused as to the gender of the doctor's kid, since the game was vague about it. A friend told me the kid was an attack helicopter, to which I responded "that joke hasn't been funny in decades." Imagine my surprise when Sarge showed up.
When you want to throw someone, it's usually the Datz.
Please dont keep calling them Butt lol. We already have one Butz with Larry, we dont need another lol. Plus it ruins the pun. 😅
Why is this games intention to make me feel? Every case has had something I almost cry over and this trial hasn't even started yet!
You're starting to sound like your old self again glad to hear it. Hopefully you're feeling better to keep the fun going. Take care please.
31:29 The dramatic irony is killing Lucah...
I love the voice you do for sergeant buff. It sort of sounds like Bowser Jr in Super Mario Sunshine.
How did Ami Fey's crystal end up in Atishon's family hands, and not i don't know Maya's? Guess we will find out. My theory is it might have something to do with Morgan.
You know, for a series which one of the things is known for is how quirky its characters either look or act that leave an impression on the player, I completely forgot about Doctor Buff's kid
We get two of some of my favorite characters in this episode. Paul Atishon is a lot like Retinz, where he’s a total asshole from the start and you just love to hate him, which you can also say for every politician IRL. But the real highlight is Sarge. I love the eyes and mustache acting as its mouthpiece, it reminds me a lot of Bobbery from the Thousand Year Door, who is my favorite character from that game. And the one arm is just charming and really makes me question how someone, let alone a child, can maneuver and control that complex drone with ease.
Let the record show that Paul Atishon is hilarious and Sarge is one of my favorite characters in the game. Also, because it's not immediately obvious, Archie Buff is supposed to be a pun on "archaeology buff," though it's somewhat obfuscated by the fact that you have to mispronounce one of Archie or archaeology to have the pun make sense
Datz is turning into Larry Butz and I’m here for that doujin
1:39 I love how it’s been mentioned in previous games that men tend to feel left out at Kurain Village since spirit channeling is mainly done by women; but so far in this game we’ve learned about a deceased male doctor who lived here, a male politician who lives here, and his grandfather who apparently made a big name for himself politically in this town.
2:47 Lucah, I can assure you that even if you had accidentally said Dr. Butt, absolutely no one would have been surprised.
33:06 Hoo boy lucah, you have no idea.
I feel like Trucy should have been the one to pick the lock on the suitcase, since she's a magician, y'know? I'm pretty sure she mentioned being able to lock pick back in AA4.
100 year old MRE? lets get that out on the tray. Nice!
Why did I imaging Dhurke pulling out reading glasses to read the note?
Paul Atishon is easily the fastest I’ve EVER hated a character. Literally the INSTANT he smirked at me for the 1st time I just sat there knowing this guy was a jerk at BEST. And I don’t blame you on your assumption on who his benefactor is. This DID come out in 2016 after all.
Datz getting arrested for breaking into a doghouse might just be the least surprising surprise I’ve EVER heard. It’s like hearing about any of Larry’s misadventures. And we’ve only known Datz for 2 cases. How this guy got absolved of his crimes I have NO idea. Maybe he was just too much trouble to hunt, keep under watch, and he was just THAT uncooperative once he broke out they just figured it just wasn’t worth it. Datz is more of a public nuisance anyway even if for a good cause.
I’m RIGHT there with you on Apollo’s mom Lucah. Figure the reason she won’t show herself to them is because of Kristoph and the group he used to stalk people. Brushel, the Misham’s, and likely more to maintain his paranoia fueled control over the people in 4-4 that lead to his giant crime list was enough to maintain Thalassa’s distance from her kids. And during the dark age in dual destinies the group was likely more dangerous to top it off. Even if Kristoph is beaten the damage he can cause is not gone for good. Why Phoenix won’t tell Trucy and Apollo at least of her EXISTENCE and their relationship so they KNOW is beyond me. But that’s on Phoenix.
As for Sarge? Kid is a delight honestly. Mustache twirling drone with an arson backstory. Poor kid. Makes me wanna give a hug, but the drone is armed to the teeth and I know what would happen if I tried.
Part of me feels like Phoenix is hoping Apollo & Trucy will do something close, before revealing the truth in a hilarious fashion. Just because Phoenix respects Apollo as an attorney now, that doesn’t mean his AJ persona is completely gone (just the part I liked with the poker face).
You’re right about the drone’s ammunition. For whatever reason, I’m reminded of that old Red vs Blue joke; “That thing’s gotta run outta bullets some time…”
@@JJ_R I accidentally wrote this analysis for the entirely wrong video on a DBS analysis on how Jiren will likely contribute to the DB universe. XD
@@Kaempfdog I’ve done that before, complete with putting my “Don’t forget” tagline on a comment section I usually put “________ is welcome in a(n) [Insert relevant location here]” in.
@@juliodicochea6875 Spark Brushel got in contact with Zak Gramarye just before he got murdered and it’s revealed Kristoph follows everyone that gets involved with the Magnifi case because Kristoph doesn’t want to be exposed and also wants to exact his revenge on those that wronged him. But it didn’t stop when he was put behind bars in 4-1. And that means it likely STILL wouldn’t stop after 4-4. Those Kristoph hired to do the spying and stalking are still out there being a present danger. And during the dark age they had more not less freedom to act. And we have no confirmation of Thalassa would be on that list if she’s discovered. Which is a HIGH possibility due to her connection to Zak. So her keeping her distance from Apollo and Trucy very well might be a smart move. What makes LESS sense is Phoenix not at least informing them I found your mother and I know you two share a mother. But that’s more on Phoenix not Thalassa if that’s the reason. She’s still trying to keep touch as Lamiroir.
25:35
I think Paul Atishon has got to be the most direct pun name in the entire series. Like in the vein of Leslie Nielson’s “I’m a locksmith, and I’m a locksmith”
“I’m Paul Atishon and I’m a politician”
Knowing what I know...
Y'know, that's all I'm going to say. Just know that some things are even more hilarious and others are even more horrifying.
7:30 Nice Laurel & Hardy quote there Dhurke.
18:53 I can hear in the back of my head "Click out of 1, 2 is binding"
Yes, I do remember My Two Dads, Lucah. Not very well, but I DO remember it.
Per the title and description: I've never seen it, but I'm Aware of its existence because Reboot (remember that show?) named one of its story-arcs-that-gets-aired-as-a-movie after it (My Two Bobs).
It is in fact, very long. It is almost certainly longer than previous record holder The Grand Turnabout. It is so long that Spirit of Justice could, very justifiably, have been the first game to have six cases in the base game.
@31:31 add that to the Player Sound of Anguish Over Phoenix Keeping This Secret For Some Reason counter
I can't believe just until now Lucah checked Datz's age XD
Sarge is my favorite! He's supposed to have a sergeant voice!
Never heard of “My two dads”, but I have heard of “Buddy Daddies”.
Don’t forget to show your badge to everyone, and check their profiles often.
Apollo has a LOT of father figures in his life. Bums, revolutionaries, musicians, public nuisances, possibly a genuine monster, and a freaking astronaut to boot.
"Doctor Butz" oh boy, Larry got his PHD.
11:52 I’m just going to say this now because I didn’t catch onto it first and a lot of LPers I’ve seen didn’t either. You may have caught onto it already but just in case you didn’t, I don’t want you hung up on the wrong idea.
The way that Orb Transfer Agreement is written is weird. A lot of times, when you get to this part in an LP of this game, the player will say something like, “Well this is invalid because he’s dead.” Yeah, so that’s not totally true. You really just need to pay attention to the context of the story. Like they said, Paul Atishon put it in the doctor’s head that the Defiant Dragons were out to harm him to get their hands on the orb. But since it just says “if I will come to no harm,” at the end, it makes it sound like if he got hurt or died, regardless of who killed him (or even if it was an accident or natural causes), the orb would go to the Dragons. But since he believed the dragons were out to harm him, he wrote the transfer agreement saying the orb would go to them if THEY didn’t harm him.
In other words, it would make more sense if it said, “I agree to hand the Founder’s Orb over to the Defiant Dragons if THEY will not harm me.” Meaning if the Defiant Dragons were NOT responsible for his death, then the agreement is totally valid.
I love Sarge so much.
i've heard of calling police "pigs", but "dogs" is maybe a little bit new.
Oh my god. Apollo's actually going to eat his hamburgers!
12:12 Gumshoe?!
3:48 Ooooh, Atishon made a big mistake running his mouth.
SARGE! Aaaah can't believe I forgot all about Sarge! This game rules
17:05 That's not a drone, that's a Shiny from Zettai Shounen
And we go from one of the worst one-off characters (Paul Atishon) to one of the best. Sarge is one of my absolute favorite one-off characters in the entire franchise. Just wait until you meet them in the flesh, and I think you'll agree.
Also, please stop calling them Buttz. That's a title reserved for Larry and Larry only.
20:42 Ah, good to see Sarge! I love this guy so much! His gimmick, the animations of his drone, and he's just cool in general. He's arguably my favorite new character in the game.
ask Maury for the true Father reveal
Inb4 Sarge is Sal Manella
Dude that would be amazing, but I think he would be a different otaku, but it’s now my headcanon that they’re at least internet friends who bonded over obsessions 😂
Not at all, Sarge is some keyboard commando and/or trash talker on CoD who loves military aesthetic because of FPS games.
TIL Paul and I share the same age. I thought he was at least a decade older ffs
Please keep it at Buff =)
One of the most ridiculous characters in the series; this goddamn drone. It only gets worse from here.
Please don't tell me he's trying to make the Nation"great again"😅
