My boy had this done when he was young. He's the bay quarter horse running around in all my youtube videos. After surgery he was said to be set for life as lawn ornament, but he ended out being fully ridable. Once of riding age he did go through lameness about every month from that tendon. Kept being given protocol of cold therapy, stall rest, and standing wraps. Turned out he needed more of a "mustang roll" hoof trim, to shorten his break over point so it puts less stress on that tendon, especially for going up hills. Has worked well for him for 16+ years now! (he's 19 now as of this comment)
Excellent work everybody. That horse is walking so well after surgery and shoeing! Hope the horse totally recovers and regains it’s health! One of the best videos I’ve seen on RUclips for animal care.
Thank you for making this horse’s soundness a priority. Many people would have dumped him in the slaughter pipeline. Suggestion for next time: when you ask a person to give their opinion or answer a question, please put the mic closer to them. All I could hear was the extremely loud clipper.
You have a very calming voice Caleb and are very skilled in what you do. I love watching people like you making animals more comfortable. God bless you. Love from Scotland ❤❤
Great job by everyone involved, especially that poor old horse. I couldn't believe you jumped in right after the surgery and put a shoe on him. He never flinched through it all, y'all must've given him the good stuff. I've seen duct tape used for a lotta things, but never by a farrier.
Oh wow that was super interesting! The effect was so marked when the tendon was cut, and the contrast in how he walked after you’d done the shoeing as well was lovely to see.
All looks amazing. What tendon was severed? What job does that muscle do? Will it reattach naturally at some point in the future? I’m amazed to see that it looks to have just done the horse good and no detriment to effectively detach one of the leg muscles! Great job! I’m glad you know what you’re doing!!
Total feel good video, nothing saddens me more than the fact that there are less horses in the world everyday. I'd go back to the horse and buggy day's in a heartbeat.
Surgery was pretty amazing...cut that little tendon. The followup shoeing is what makes the whole procedure successful. Thanks for explaining your tools. I would love to know how the tools evolved...someone at some point in time said "hmmmm...need a tool to do this or that". The horse shoe is pretty interesting and the job it's supposed to do. Duct tape is pretty amazing stuff...the universal fix it all...that and super glue. Kudos to all helping this poor horse regain its footing.
I am always fascinated by the uniqueness of any horse. But those who fondly live for this animal's best care, handling, and grooming touches me to how the horse's need does respond in a sweet trust. You all are wonderful loving this horse.
Waooo amazing job God bless all you people I'm grown in Puerto Rico around horse cow in I have are horse whit the leg like that in I do the saying think I'm at I do tha she was running fast ok thanks for the video in for the Love to the horse.❤
You had no idea watching him at thend that he had anything wrong with him. Thanks to everyone involved for fixing his lameness issue. Hope he's recovered by now. Amazing..
Caleb, Does it hurt the horse to have his foot and ankle bent between your legs for you to shoe him because the leg tendon is trying to heal straight? Also, how did the horse hurt his tendon enough to be in such pain and require Dave to have to do surgery? I’m so happy that he seems to be healing and out of most, if not all, of his pain. Great job everyone! The surgery was interesting to watch! Thanks for sharing. ❤️🐴🧲❤️
Question, When the vet cut the tendon did he completely sever it or just cut it enough to allow it to drop the leg in the position it should be? And will he be able to be ridden once completely healed? I was always told if the tendon is severed the horse would never be sound enough to ride. These typed of videos I really enjoy watching. I wanted to become a Veterinarian I couldn't afford the cost of vet school. Thank you.
So what’s next besides stall rest? Does he continue without that tendon there at all if there’s not reattachment or stem cells to rebuild the tendon? Do they do that with tendons or only ligaments? Just curious long term for the guy. Awesome job with the shoe and transformation!
Long-term is scar tissue will form around the ends of the tendon holding it together. We will have an update video in a few weeks and will try to get more explanation for everyone. Hi recovery is going great and he is healing nicely

@@caleberickson_The_Dying_Breed Oh good. Maybe you could include some general information about this horse.
Interesting 😮
thanks for helping this horse. 💗 I wish the veterinarian had on a mic.
Do you have a choice of closed caption? I almost always have mine on iPad RUclips
I'd have to look not sure
Couldn't hear what the vet said while they were shaving the surgery site. Closed caption didn't pick up what he said either.
