The event will include remarks by Under Secretary Nuland, followed by a conversation moderated by Max Bergmann, Director of the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program and the Stuart Center at CSIS.

How long will Nuland dance at the end of The International War Crimes Tribunal, rope?
Considering US policy towards Ukraine since 2008, it almost seems as if provoking a Russo-Ukrainian war was the aim all along, and not just an unfortunate side effect. Nuland was instrumental in scuttling EU-Russian efforts to defuse the Maidan crisis in 2014 - we can all listen to the audio of her infamous phone call with Pyatt. The worst part was that the EU was dragged kicking and screaming into US machinations. The concept of national sovereignty seems foreign to US policymakers - this previously could only have been said of the CIA and DoD, and the fact that the neocon cancer has spread to the State Department is truly tragic. This has profound implications for the attractiveness of being a US ally - because that apparently means getting your gas pipelines blown up if you try and pursue a divergent foreign policy. I wish US policymakers would think about that just a bit more, because our allies are our main point of leverage if things get messier than they are now.
So how did the US "provoked" Russia to grab the lands of Ukraine in 2014 and now? What in particular did the US or Ukraine in 2021 to "provoke" another invasion? Moved out of Afghanistan and appeared weak?
Russia made no efforts to defuse maidan, they refused to participate in the agreement between Yanukovych and the opposition. They wanted Yanukovych to squash the protest.
So what about that amazing phone call that the Russian government propaganda brings up all the time?

Nuland is evil incarnate, having begun this disaster in 2014. Not too late for a negotiated settlement in March 2024 -- here's hoping.

"Full-scale invasion" Where did this expression come from? It is a seemingly obligatory term, repeated endlessly. The problem is that of course the invasion was not full scale but instead a major Russian miscalculation of sending in only 180k troops, far too little to fight a prolonged war. Ukraine quickly stood up an army far larger than the available Russian expeditionary troops. The collapses in Xerson and Xarkov are emblematic of the near fatally small force the Russians had allocated to the the incursion. To all appearances, Russian leaders believed this intervention would play out in a way similar to the 2008 invasion of Georgia: Russian soldiers moved in to support breakaway regions, quickly compelling the Georgians to talks and inevitable neutrality. Ukraine defied these expectations and quickly wrong footed the Russians. By mid 2022, Russia was facing a dire shortage of troops as even the small invasion force was shrinking due to the expiration of 6-month sign ups. It is only through painful recalibration that Russia has managed to develop a military force capable in recent months of taking the initiative.
This is to distinguish invasion of 2022 from a proxy war and invasion of dressed up soldiers in 2014 pretending to not be Russian.
The terminology used is no accident, as it emphasizes and doubles down on the narrative of Russia intending to conquer all of Ukraine (doubtful at best) and by extension posing a threat to other countries in the region (certainly false, at least when it comes to Nato members such as the Baltics and Poland).
@@johnniea4684 I believe "full-scale invasion" is a cousin of "unprovoked invasion". Both are lies because they are knowing misstatements from officials who know the truth. The first, "full-scale", is meant to make people believe that the Russians were fully committed, as you say, to conquering Ukraine. The second, "unprovoked invasion", is meant to make people believe that the attack had nothing to do with American actions, that this was a wicked whim of Putin, who rolled out of bed one day and decided to invade Ukraine. Both are propaganda, efforts to minimize the potential for peace through negotiations, to evade the possibility that the Western public could blame said government officials for choosing policies that put Ukraine on course for conflict with Russia.
