love this song and love this version better. I first was aware of it when I purchased Rubáiyát: Elektra's 40th Anniversary set. I still have it and made sure I was able to transfer to MP3 because this song is no where to be found on streaming services

It's an ARRANGEMENT, for heaven's sake! So it can't be the same. It's well put together (keeping as much of Robin's decorations as feasable), well played, well sung - I like it, and that's saying something, coming from an ISB obsessive who tries to play ISB covers exactly note for note!!

Nicely said Peter O. It's a COVER , and in this case something more. Jackson 99% of the time tries to appreciate the songwriter's intentions and style. It is not meant to be a note for note rendition of someone else's song , that would just be a replication maybe appropriate for a film portraying an artist . That said , this is not one of my favorite covers by Jackson Browne. It seems a bit saccharine . Jackson Browne has covered many artists over the years with much integrity and great results. These artists include : James Taylor, (live ) Bob Dylan, Lynyrd Skynyrd , ( live) , Buddy Holly , John Lennon , and Warren Zevon ( Live ), Boudleau Bryant " Love Hurts " ( live ) , the Eagles , The Beatles , Lowell George , and there may be many more that I don't remember right now. I like this cover, but feel that it is not Jackson at his best. I'd be willing to bet that if Jackson sang it today , it would be in in his current rich baritone and at a slower tempo. I say this as a true Jackson Browne fan , without blinders on. Even though I think Jackson's cover could be better , I revisited ISB's version and talk about being rushed and unfelt , ( Sorry about that Peter ) they dId it to their own song. Personally I think Jackson's version is a big , big improvement.

Where are all the notes, Mr Browne?
I am a huge admirerer of Jackson Browne, he is America's greatest contemporary songwriter, blessed with a refined musicality and by all accounts a thoroughly good guy; this, though, is pap. The original song depends on the writer's busily dazzling guitar accompaniament, his partner Mike Heron's sitar embellishment and the plangent bowing by bassist Danny Thompson; it is a fine example of a peculiarly British, inventive but disicplined acoustic jam. This, with, presumably. Maestro David Lindley's hand at the sidesmen's wheel, misses completely that combination of clever, tender, poignant lyric and raucous, extravagant stringing. They really were the Incredible String Band. There is no crime here, no disrespect and in a way it is interesting to see revealed what is one of Jackson Browne's own influences but as is often but not always the case the original - bypassing Madam Judy Collins's interpretation - is far and away in a different dimension of superior

I appreciate your comments although a bit too coarse (despite your disclaimers to the contrary), but I respectfully disagree slightly, No question the Incredible Incredible String Band did the definitive version their original. But as you say It's interesting to see what Jackson finds inspiring and he acquits himself fairly well here albeit missing the full emotional resonance of the Incredible's. But it's also nice to hear Jackson's unique voice and a slightly more spare subdued tonal quality inhabiting this tune aided and abetted adeptly by maestro Lindley.
Was that a mild verbal stab at Sweet Judy Blue Eyes? I hope not because I also love Judy's version. In essence I love all 3 versions but the Incredible String Band takes Top Honors here by far!

Jackson Browne found the melody into the noise. I'd say the ISB had the intuition of the song, while mr. Browne made it real. A real song, not just a visionary noise.

Sorry, there was no sitar on this track. Maybe that guitar work fooled you a bit. Still with Danny Thompson's contribution it is a special song. One of three of 60's key songs according to one LA music critic (the others being Day in the Life and Like A Rolling Stone!)
