I’ve lived in a paid-for house since 2016. My biggest takeway (and surprise) has been the wonderfully overwhelming feeling of “this is MY house…MY roof over my head”! I always felt like and assumed my mortgaged house was mine. But the peace and satisfaction I have now is so much greater than when I lived in a mortgaged house! Having a paid-for house also allows you extra money to pay off your car, truck, and other debt. This spells F-R-E-E-D-O-M to me.
How does it feel now a year later ?
@@garyshea3515 It feels awesome, I had money for every fire drill that came my way, finished up my living room, have the money saved to replace fence and install shed this summer, getting ready to replace the car. So much less stress.

35 years old, just Paid off my 215k/15 year Loan on mortgage in 3.5 years. I lived within my means/ lived frugally for last 3.5 years, saved 75% of my income and threw in the Principal. Now I am learning how to invest my money and travel the world!
Not too hard if you make around $150K/yr or more.
I feel you on the discipline part. I am disciplined because I have to show up at work everyday, but I get so mad at myself when I'm not disciplined for myself on MY days off for my own free time. So I've been working on that. I hate that I'm programmed to show up for others and not for what I want. Great video! Thanks for sharing.

I don’t know if you’ve heard of the four tendencies book by Gretchen Rubin but one of the tendencies is to be an obliger and you may just need something to hold you accountable for your YOU days. I know as I would be the same myself!
You are probably the type that needs outward expectations, and you struggle with meeting inward expectations. Have to set goals and deadlines for yourself and find someone to hold you accountable.

This reminds me of how we are often stimulated into action by fear. Once we no longer have fear we have to cultivate the habit of action based on healthier motives. But for most of us from school age until well into our adult hood we’ve been motivated into action by fear. It’s a journey to develop new stimuli

Truth. Me being one month away from not being able to pay rent was a wake up call. 10 years later I have a house and no debt. With a goal to pay off my house 15 years early.
The borrower is slave to the lender.
That is the best advice I have ever gotten... waking up in the morning with no mortgage, no car payments, no credit cards, and no loans is an unbelievable feeling. It gives you power and choice over your life
So many people are brainwashed into thinking you need a credit card, need a credit score, etc. I haven't had a credit card or used credit in 9 years. I don't know my credit score and don't care.

I know the feeling. I paid off my mortgage during the end of 2020. It’s such a wonderful peace of mind to know I don’t have to worry about mortgage or rent again. Yes, we still have to consider home owners insurance and property taxes, but it’s only a few hundred dollars a month. I love it here!!

@@cherylvargas9187 Hello. I purchased my home in 2003 with a 30 year mortgage. It was originally supposed to be paid off in 2033. I started making biweekly mortgage payments through an authorized third party company. That resulted in me making two extra principal only payments a year. That knocked off several years. I also increased the amount of my principal payments each payment. That took off several years. In the end of 2020, my mortgage balance was lower then the amount in my emergency savings. Although it’s frowned upon, I took some of my savings and paid off my mortgage. With no mortgage, I have been able to put even more back in my savings. I have no regrets. The only bad thing about paying off your mortgage is that it makes it really hard to wake up and go to work each day. Lol

Something to keep in mind, insurance not only covers your home and personal property, it covers liability.
Love this! Focused intensity is what you must have and not worrying about what others think. We paid our home off March 9, 2020 and the very next week the lock down happened. I must tell you the peace and contentment that we have had since all this craziness started is a blessing. Being completely debt free gives you true peace and you can help others that need it. There is a profound sense of accomplishment in being debt and mortgage free. And yes self discipline is key to anyones peace.
The Mortgage was my husband's #1 worry when he found out that he had cancer, Thanks Be to God that I was able to put extra towards the principal and a 20k gift from our parents. I was able to Surprise my husband with a paid for house a month before his surgery 🥰

Paid off mortgage 1 week ago and the fee to change the title yesterday. I can't wait to experience the "floating" feeling of debt freedom.
My goal is to have the "mental/account space" to be generous without concern, I have prayed for many years to be debt free and doing more in my personal ministry.

Interesting insights. Number 3 especially resonated with me. We have paid off our mortgage, have no other debts, and live frugally. This has allowed me to downsize my career and work part time, so I have more time to work on personal goals and projects. But just because I have the time does not mean those things have been automatically happening. I needed to hear this today. Thank you.

My Wie and I are enjoying your videos. We are two generations older than your two but our experiences with getting out of debt and being debt free are similar. We had difficulties and dissapointments with the reaction to our desire for financial independence from family and closer friends. We are 4 years away and expecting our 4th child. By the time the kids are all busy in the community we will be able to keep up because we will have more time and money to do fun things with them.

Amen to this but also a thought as I read most of the comments, considering that God only weighs the hearts, I experience a sense of security in my finances and I do have a mortgage. The sense of security came from trusting him in finances and giving when it made NO sense for me. It was hard but he gave me a new revelation around finances and provision and that set me free and I feel secure everyday. Not to play down the blessing it is that you have accomplished that by the fruits of your labor and diligence, just the security aspect side of it can also be a bit worldly, someone who doesn't know Jesus may also find peace and security in having no debt or financial stability, while someone in a third world country who is also living by faith and in their entire lifetime will never own a place or retire, but have the same peace as you just because they know God is their provider.
@@davidgallo2098 I agree with you! I am a stay at home home homeschooling mom of 4, so the fact that my if something happens to my husband we won't lose our home is pretty huge for me, but God is good and he definitely provided for us to allow us to do this.

I've always lived within my means. I didn't buy a house until I was sure I could afford it. I'm not a spendy person. I don't want to buy expensive things or take big vacations. I never really struggled or sweat over the mortgage payment it was just something I knew had to happen and it did. Automatic payment thing. I was saving up to renovate and at some point I realized I had enough money to pay off the mortgage. I calculated how much I would save over the remaining about 15 years. Maybe I could have done better with Investments but I'm not a risky person. The money I'd save was a sure thing. I was sad for a while with a much lower bank balance. That's changing at a rapid pace now. My spending is still the same. This all happened before covid hit. That was the biggest relief. Going into covid with no mortgage! With all the shutdowns I wasn't really worried about my job but I also had nothing to worry about or actually a lot less than probably many people. So yeah the peace of mind is there but it's not like I ever worried about losing the house or not making a payment I wasn't ever really in that situation. So nothing's changed much other than I put off the renovation. I have started some Investments with the money which give me additional peace of mind for the future. I still don't think I'm rich but having it paid off mortgage sure does feel like it and when you tell someone that which I generally avoid they think you're rich too.
Working as a nurse in norway. Will be debt free when i am 60 years. Hopefully. 37 now and are careful with money.
Totally resonate about spending more $ when you don't have a mortgage. That happened to us also. We pd off our mortgage 5 yrs ago & we were shocked how we started spending or wasting money. We had to curb that really quickly.
That dining out bill can add up quick, huh? lol
@@gojereme Yes, it can. We now only eat out on Sun after church & sometimes one other day on our dates days.
We took what we were spending on our mortgage after we paid it off to was to fully fund my husband's 403b... now that's a "normal expense " we are considering sending our kids to private school (to give them a "normal" school experience, plus Christian education)

I’m in my mid 60s and became debt free at age 45. I still worked a 9 to whatever time job till age 61. I did find myself going on a bit of a spending uptick (musical instruments) but that has been tamed. Yeah!!!
I have set up a weekly schedule of activity to guide my days - the discipline thing. That’s absolutely necessary for me to not waste time in front of the TV or laying too long in bed. Also, I’m working on a spending plan for 2022 to be very intentional on where dollars go. I don’t like waste of any sort.

@@kbanghart Correct I set aside 1.5 to 2% of the value of the value of my house for repairs. I experience wind, hail, sun exposure and slight settling that may cause one year to have larger expenses than another. However, I’m ok with having these issues to deal with. Paying real estate estate taxes is like paying very inexpensive rent - lovin’ it. Please get there as soon as practical for yourselves 😃✊🏽👍🏾
@@southjersey10 yeah I've been thinking about having a very small mortgage payment, but after considering the term of the loan, and all the interest you have to pay up front, that just seems like so much cash thrown away. Seems much better to work on saving that money and putting it back into maintenance, like you said. I'm going on 25 years of paying into a mortgage and would be nice to stop that soon.
@@kbanghart If you had a 30 year mortgage, you would have 5 years of a higher percentage of the payment going towards principle. It may be a good strategy for you to save more to help fight the current effects of inflation.
There is a verse in the book of proverbs that says the rich rule over the poor and that the borrower is slave to the lender (Proverb 22:7). Financial freedom just feels good. Take care and be prosperous. 😀

Your third point hit home with me. We just moved into a new home and I was excited thinking about how I was going to organize the home and setup my garden, but thinking it and doing it are two different things. I have the time and the money but I am absolutely dragging my feet getting anything done.
It makes total sense. I spent majority of 2021 trying to get myself to do things I wanted when I had a job but realised it wasn't that easy. It's really a mindset thing

Intresting thoughts. Let me give you a piece of knowledge from a all time home owner family (Im the first to rent): you still have mortgage.
Not the monthly payment to a bank that gets angry if you dont deliever, but you should still save up money. Maybe less then you did for the real mortgage, but now it is your responsibility to care for the house so you need money to...
... remodel the bathrooms after 10 years
... change all the doors after 15
... paint down the fassade
... rebuild the fence
... change the windows
... paint indoors
... buy a new kitchen
... replace the garage door
and so on.
Dont let your house fall apart and take up a big credit in 30 years to do everything at once. Do something every few years, and you will have a lot more fun in your home.

Videoes like yours have inspired me. I bought home in jan 2023 on 30 year loan as i could not afford risk of taking 15 year loan as i m only earner. Anyways, when i saw your other video it inspired me. I work hard on paying extra money towards principal. As of today i have reduced the payment timeline from jan 2053 to july 2048 by paying extra. I will continue to put extra budget towards paying it off because i do not like the odea of owing someone anything. I would love to really in every sense own my home. One thing i need to oush myself for is getting job that pays me better.i dont drink or smoke. I may go out to eat 3 to 4 times in a month. Trying to cut down other expenses..but want to feel relief of fulling owning my own stuff. Property taxes , insurance and utilies are still a lot less than the amount we waste on interest and emptional energies we spend when we are in debt.
I am mortgage and debt free as of July this year - ten years early.. I gave myself a few months to do the things I had denied myself and took my family away etc. From January my plan is different and I will be more intentional. Great video Jereme.
To celebrate your achievements and get up to date on stuff that you sacrified during the pay off period is a great idea. We’re debt free, but not mortgage free (25% of the house value left of the mortgage). I go hardcore while working towards a goal and when I resurface I do need to celebrate and get some new items for my closet etc.

I appreciate you for sharing your experience with me. You are like an answered prayer! I have been contemplating getting a mortgage in the future, as I believed it is something everyone has to do at some point in their lifetime. However, I am currently in debt, and I have realized that my thinking should change first. Otherwise, I will get stuck in this vicious cycle of accumulating debt and paying it off, which never seems to end!
Thanks for sharing from the heart. The freedom that comes from having no debt can result in odd feelings. We have to intentionally deprogram our minds to think and live differently from the messages we are bombarded with from friends and the media. Family support and encouragement is huge, as it could otherwise be a lonely road (if you know what I mean).
I think it can get lonely at times - something I didn't mention in this video, but a topic worth discussing.
I still have the "have to's" list and other family members ask things of me knowing I only work a day or two per week and have the time. I start everyday with the have to's and if I am feeling up to it, will do the want to's.

I found once we got out of debt it freed our mind to think about what legacy we were leaving family who follow us. Now we have decided to pay the mortgage and are getting close it feels like we can choose our next life...what will we do with our financial freedom? Not sure yet but we are watching videos like yours to see what new motivations we might receive! The biggest goal is time freedom...money can buy the security to get it i(n my paid off home). I have to thank you! I was working towards FIRE while living in Portland; saw one of your videos about 6 months ago and it all just clicked. I started virtual real estate tours; bought cute home for cash in a little town on the East Coast... and we began our trek cross country. We moved in on Christmas Eve. It was a journey in a lot of ways; and it feels a little surreal; but also, a blessing and relief. It wasn't an entirely smooth situation; but, it was all worth it. It’s good to see a young couple living this lifestyle. This is mine and my husbands goal but we still have the mortgage to pay off. We are in our 30’s so hopefully we can make it happen soon and learn by learning from you and your wife’s example.

I agree wholeheartedly about the intentional spending. But really it needs to be part of your intentional living. I find myself get distracted away from intentional living and someone like you is put in my path to remind me. Something that helps me is having a core question I ask myself. I believe that my existence is a gift from God. I am given time, energy, money and other resources that God expects me to be a Steward of. Am I being intentional, respectful and loving with the resources under my Stewardship? I am in awe of Christians like George Muller, St Francis of Assisi, Charles Spurgeon, Mother Teresa, Brother Lawrence and many others. I wonder what my legacy will be?
Now I have more knowledge about personal finance. I just subscribed to your channel. Big ups to everyone working effortlessly trying to earn a living while building wealth in this recession. I’m 44 and my husband is 50 we are both retired being financial independent, no debts. Currently living smart and frugal with our money. Saving and investing lifestyle in the financial market made it possible for us this early even till now we earn monthly through passive income.

@@lagoodgirl4625 It's not a problem at all! I would advise you to determine your investment horizon, but I recommend a long-term plan if you are looking to make a lot of profit on your investment. I created a long term investment plan with Lewis James Godfrey who helped me invest and manage my investment which helped me a lot. I earn passively from the investment even after retirement.

Having a good financial planner is like having a mentor . I was losing my money trying to invest on my own but it was different from Lewis James Godfrey. Your content is always so thought provoking and deeply resonates with me. Creating financial margin in our lives is the foundation for good mental and physical health. Marriages and other familial relationships can often be irrevocably fractured from money problems. The proverbial hamster wheel is soul numbing. Time to consider how to pursue a better and more meaningful life.
Totally, but what sustains financial margin is good principles and habits. I believe that most of the time money problems in marriages or in someone's life is the symptom of bad habits not the root cause.

My husband and I are about to purchase our first home! We have such affordable, cute houses in the neighborhood we’re looking. The mortgage will be almost $1000 off our housing expenses. We are excited to pay off the rest of our commercial debt and then pay the mortgage off early after that 😊

So true. I recently paid off my house and have zero debt and my wife is making good money but was just laid off. I technically do not need a job but have spent the last 20 years working out of fear of paying bills. Still figuring out what I even want to do at this point, not a terrible spot to be in but even debt free am not feeling great without direction.
There is such a sense of financial peace when you have a paid off house. I have a paid off house that is now a rental and a source of passive income. My principal residence has a mortgage. My financial goal in 2022 is to make double mortgage payments. I’m a nurse and very fortunate that I can work extra shifts for additional income. I determine my earning potential and my financial future.

@@alexanderhauge2636 I work in the USA at a hospital. They are paying us large bonus for each extra shift we pick up. I went part time in November 2021 but make more money now when I pick up extra shift at bonus rate. I don’t know how long this will last but I’m taking full advantage of it.

Jereme, Thank you for the video, one thing I'd like to mention is how the words economy and ecology have the same Latin root word, eco, basically translating to home. To me, this shows that to have a healthy home, we need solutions that are both economically AND environmentally intelligent. Feel the same. Remain grateful and grounded a lifetime. Sometimes it is okay to get any local steady job to interact w/people (and get paid), and not feel the struggle or place too much expectation w in /a short period of time in your business. One year is a short period of time --considering you may live to be 100. More important to develop good lifetime habits and be eased w/it.

Its time to make a very carefully prepared financial plan for the rest of your life including your retirement. I've been doing just that for many years. My experience has been that suddenly many in the church and elsewhere become very poor. Don't be taken in by anyone who says "the Lord told me....." or put you on a guilt trip if you don't give/loan them money.
