- In this video I give a brief view on multistring guitars' life through centuries. There is very musc left to say, but we need to begin with something. I hope you'll love to learn about 10 string guitar more today. Also I play a short snippet of J.S.Bach Invention #4 (4:11)
Sheet music (+tab) of the fragment of Invention I play in this video: / invention-4-tab-41673470

The question is not “Who needs 10 strings?” but “Who can make wonders with 10 strings?” And, clearly, that's you, Marina.
😁😁😁😁 thank you!!!
Well done. My grandfather played a 6+3 string guitar (6 standard + 3 used as pedals) in a theatre orchestra almost 100 years ago. Even if not played, the extra strings enrich the basic tone with more harmonics returning a fuller tone that's clearly audible from your executions. Keep safe and healthy.
Exactly! :) it's the idea Yepes used largely

It's amazing, a russian girl gesticulating like an italian! :D I'm enjoying your videos and your cd's, gesticulated greetings from Italy :)
😆😁😁 thank you!
I really appreciate your work on the ten strings guitar, ether playing traditional classical pieces or your own compositions that, I consider to be, genuine contemporary classical music (I love them!). That's a strong confidence and directional energy in your playing, and beside the question every musician asks "why did I chose this instrument?" you seen to be determined to proof your choice and make the beautiful sound of the decacorde not only your signature sound, but also a better known sound by the public... I can feel that in your music.
Thank you very much for these words 🙂🙂🙂
I’ve heard several say the same and I’m happy there’s several variations of the guitar. Different guitars can be inspiring.
P.S. Nikita Koshkin is amazing and The Usher Waltz is one of my favorite pieces.
You are the only one I ever have seen who plays 10 strings guitar. Those are rare in my country. Even I didn't see anyone in my life. So I didn't wonder why you are playing 10 stings guitar. You are kind of unique to me. So I really love this explanation. Waiting for your next video. Good Luck.
Thank you very much!
I enjoy your voice, dear.
Thanx 🙂
@@MarinasDecacorde я тебя полностью понимаю, мне тоже вынимали мозги по типу "Нахера тебе семь струн?" или "на семиструнках никто уже не играет"
In essence: 'I like and use the range of 10. If you are content with 6, that is ok and nothing to be ashamed of.' So it comes down to habit and the level of Bach one aims at. True fact: After some weeks of listening more to your and other more-than-standard range channels on the web (there are quite a few!), I revisited some much loved guitar music in my car this morning. Already it felt a bit odd with that 'soprano base' restriction.
You mention incredibly cool stuff, thanks for sharing, I want a 10-string guitar!!! 😋😋😋
🙂🙂🙂 thank you! I hope you will have it
@@MarinasDecacorde you're welcome! 😊 I think I will have to look it up online, in my country it is very difficult to find instruments like this... 😓
In my - too. I ordered a new one from abroad 🙂
Personally I think Seven is the optimal number of strings tuned AEADGBE. I also have an 8 string I play occasionally tuned AEADGBEA going up to a high A rather than down to a low F#.
Oh, I meant to ask how do you tune your 10? Is it all standard 4ths, so G#C#F#BEADGBE?
I was thinking, if I had a 10, I would mimic the typical 'third' interval between the 2nd and 3rd string in the low register. This would give a tuning of ADGBEADGBE... Thoughts?
Hi Marina, I play Brahms-Guitar (8 strings with 1 higher and 1 lower) and it is amazing, I can't come back to 6 after I've discovered all this potential. Congratulations for your channel, you are a nice musician
Thank you very much! I admire Brahms-Guitar 🙂💪
I listen to your recordings over and over, your compositions are amazing !!! Thank you!!!
Wow, thank you!
I got into 10 and 11 string guitar through listening to Goran Sollscher play Bach's Works for Lute. Still one of my favourite recordings ever!
Amazing Story,I believe 10strings gives you more creativiti.
Your Guitarplaying is amazing.
Love your Video's.
It's all about range and richness but your playing explains it better than any words. Besides, why not? It's a gorgeous instrument and your music is too
😁😁😁
How long does it take to change a 10 string classical guitar? 😂😂😂
40% longer than 6 string 😆
You are putting the 10-string guitar on the map. I wish the 13-string gang also had someone like you.
Duh Duh jent, Duh jent. Duh Duh Duh Duh jent jent.
That Bach piece ... ❤️❤️
I had my 7-string bass constructed specifically because I wanted to be able to play the Bach Inventions (and other keyboard works, potentially). I ended up focusing on the solo violin and solo cello works which also benefitted from the seven strings. I did play Invention #1 live once with fellow extended range bassist Ariane Cap.
I love to hear you play the decacorde. Six strings are great for strumming cords and for a lot of modern music but I agree that more strings are needed to better capture the feel of many compositions.
Awesome video! Thank you! I think you’ve helped me find the one.
Muchas Gracias maestra por vuestra explicación de la guitarra de 10 cuerdas … muy bien fundamentado !!! Un abrazo inmenso
Thank you for the edification!!!!
2nd time watching this one + also I watched the other one about 10 -ropes- strings. Quite interesting in fact!
But here I'm wondering, "what is your feeling or thought about 12 -rop...- strings?
Sorry for asking in this video ~1 year later; thanks and good week!
Depends on what kind of 12 strings)) there are at least 2 variants
With doubled strings tuned in octave - “big sound” for strumming and for some not very difficult fingerstyle (I say not very difficult because it is less comfortable to play than a 6 string acoustic guitar).
If we speak about Bolin guitars (they were mostly with 11 or 13 strings though) - very interesting but I do not see the real need in MORE strings. Only if you want to play basses mostly infested and need as many bass strings as possible for that purpose) also can be :)
OH! I see, certainly interesting about the 2nd variant. Yeah, 1st variant seems uncomfortable to play (against a 6 strings).
So, Bolin guitars look like "rococo" and 7-10 as "baroque" (?). Thanks for your feedback and explanations : ). I really appreciate it!
Personally, I would love to hear more of Bach's Invention #4, maestro Marina
I thought about it))) It may be, that I will learn this invention to the end and make a video 🙂
@@MarinasDecacorde I love Bach. He has always been my favorite classical composer. Whatever you choose to play, dear friend, I shall show up to listen
I mostly play tenor guitar or mandolin, so for me, four strings (or courses) is enough! When I do play my six string, I sometimes mute the bass strings to avoid the overtones. Well done managing that wide fretboard! Looking forward to hearing more.
Very nice playing! I am happy to have found your channel.
I have an 8 string electric guitar that I've been playing for awhile. I recently bought a beautiful 9 string guitar and love it very much. Today I made an order for a custom 10 string V shaped guitar by a very talented luthier in Colombia. I can't wait to play it!
Wow! So great, have a happy time 😁🎸
Fantastic!
Ah yes!
Keep these informative segments coming.
Instant thumbs up!
Thank you!!!
If Marina and Yamandu play guitar with only one string, I love them the same way!!! Regards from Brazil!
Elegant explanation.
Thank you :)
Congratulations for this video. You said every information really clear and all the contents were well explained. After i got to know you and your work, im really thinking abput getting a 10 string guitar, as ive already told you once. It sounds really amazing besides it opens a great option of repertour.
Keep doing this excellent work.
All the best 😘
Thank you very much! I hope your desire will come true 🙂
Great work on your 10 string arrangements. I am currently building my first 10 string and it is totally inspired by your Rondo Alla Turca vídeo. I have played 'Rondo' for 20 years now and hearing your performance of the piece was very powerful. I am curious who the luthier is and what the scale length of your guitar is, etc. A very impressive instrument and phenomenal performance...Keep up the great work!.....Robert Lowe.
That video was amazing 👍
Thank you!
Very cool 😎
Where can. I buy a multi string guitar.
The ten string would be amazing to play I love the sound of the low strings so cool
I agree 🙂 you can order a 10 string guitar from a luthier
@@MarinasDecacorde nice thanks 😁
I have heard good things about Heikki Rousu's guitars though I have not played them. He makes all kinds of multi-string guitars. There are many luthiers and some factories (usually cheaper) that build multi-string guitars. Read some reviews about them and decide.
I just happened upon some content of yours, and I really enjoy it. keep it up! ;)
Thank you😁😁😁
hello Marina, thanks to you I discovered the 10-string guitar, with the video playing Djent, I fell in love. By the way, I could do more compositions like that one, I loved it and I always listen to it. I'm thinking of sending a luthier to make a similar instrument, but I'm afraid I won't be able to adapt to the instrument, could you suggest books and things like that to study? Many thanks and kisses from Brazil.
Very nice Marina!!!
Thank You for Sharing.
Fantastic video!
I just bought a new 10 string classical. I need ideas on how to add three more lower strings.
A referral to a guitar luthier in the San Francisco Bay Area is ideal.
Why not . JAMIE Dupuis plays 18 string harp guitar and sounds awesome your playing 10 and sound great as well . Have a great day
Great information. Love from Azerbaijan 🇦🇿
😇🙏🙏🙏
I love this 10-string guitar. I figure that it may give better performance for piano-pieces than 6-string because it broadens the bass. It's a little regret that the only piece you play is Mozart's sonata K545. Wishfully, there will be more.
I prefer playing my original music mostly. But you can also find "Rondo Alla Turca" in my performance :)
@@MarinasDecacorde well I can see it now. Thanks.
I'd probably use my ima fingers to help with the bass and make it more fluid. Too many notes to ask the thumb only. Would like to get a 10 string guitar some day.
Music needs more than 6 or 7 or 10 strings, music is choking with limited strings number, give it freedom 💁🏻♂️ I enjoy this explanation, and like the way you speak rushinglish😅... But above all, my dream to have 6 or 7 or 10 strings guitar 🤩
I agree!! Thank you:))
Rushinglish 😆😆😆😆
Thank you - very interesting talk (please make sure to keep your head up and try not to lean over the guitar when you play - I have very bad neck problems now from years of playing like this)
I like Galbraith’s 8 string guitar having a high A string guitar.
Wonderful explanation! Now I’m beginning to think 6 isn’t enough for me...
He he 😈😸😸
(Here from Rick Beato's video.)
I can't believe this is my first time learning there is such a thing as a 10 string guitar! I've seen 12 strings, but not 10. So fascinating.
Thank you! 😊😊😊
Could you talk about the tunings you use? And why you use them?
Yes, I think it will be interesting. 🙂
This theory (TRUTH) not only applies to Guitar strings, It applies to chocolate too😁
Thanks for another great video @Marina's Decacorde, looking forward to the next one.
(Yes, I was eating chocolate whilst watching this video when I made the connection)
😆😆😆😆 I agree that it also applies to many other things, of we think it over. Including chocolate, of course 😉

You gesture like a Napolitan! 🤭❤️ I can't stop loving your Channel. 👍👍👍❤️🌷
😁😁😁thanx!!!
Brilliantly put! Even I tend to hear "you have way too many strings" a lot and it's rather frustrating because in my mind's eye, there's no such thing as too many strings, and I currently play a Legator 9-string guitar and I hope to go as far as buy a 10-string electric guitar in the future. Quick question, though, what's the tuning you use on your decacorde? Thanks!
💐💕👍🙂🙃
I tune my low e down 5 half steps and wait til I can afford an 8 string
I enjoyed your discussion and as you say people should play whatever they want. I'm not so fond of the sound of the 10 strings, though I do have a recording of the music of Ohana for 10 string guitar which I think is great and I also enjoy the Bach recordings on alt guitar. Thinking back to the time of lute (double strings!), more and more strings got added to it and eventually it went out of fashion. I take that to mean an instrument needs to find a niche for itself to survive, the 6 string seems to have found that, well for the moment at least. I wish you much success in your playing.
Thank you very much!
fascinating.
I've been playing 10 string guitar for about 5 years. I always felt that 6 was insufficient especially since I'm very bass oriented. I've been looking for classical sheet music and have been using piano or multi part brass scores and transposing. (beyond my skill level....) Then again, I do terrible things to music... I put everything to Ska beat, it's just how I'm wired... the 10 string works so well for Ska bass and treble chipping rhythms together.
Wow, great! How interesting 😃
@@MarinasDecacorde any suggestions on where to find classical scores for ten string?
Classical - Mertz and Carulli. Also you can find my scores on my website.:))) www.marinasdecacorde.com
Thank You
thank you
Thank you for this story. Music is an endless study. For me, personally, just one string would be too many, let alone ten. I play the piano, but which instrument one plays is not really the issue. It's about telling your story through music.
How many octaves do you get with your ten strings?
+1 octave lower, if I need. I use variqble basses tuning. Sometimes it can be even E.
Thanks!
But can you play "Country Roads"?
🤔🤔
10 струн 10 пальчиков, все логично)))
If you like 10 strings that's fine, but 6 strings are enough to get the point across.
Yes. But do you know about russian instrument balalaika? It has only 3 strings, and it's enough, honestly. More than that, 2 of the 3 strungs are tuned similar.
@Marina's Decacorde I never heard of the russian balalaika, but i will look into it. Wow! only 3 strings. You would have to think that when Antonio Torres designed the bigger 6 string modern day classical guitar as opposed to the smaller Sor, Aguado, Giuliani 6 string classical guitar, that he not only had sound projection in mind, but also ergonomics, and what would fit the average human hand.
Yes, of course
I play my 7 stringi. DRop A. What is your 10 string tuned to?
In the times of that video had been recorded - I do not remember, but I think I said it somewhere in the video. And now I use the following tuning:
D A F C G F C A G F
Hello, i have just one question, did you learn all the triad and 7 th chord and it's inversion on all strings?
Where can i buy this guitar or sinilar please help ha i want to
You can order it from the Luthier who built mine: www.serracini.it/category/guitars/
I have a bass voice that extends down to A1 (3 ledger lines below the bass staff). So I find the 6 string guitar woefully inadequate.
😁😁😁😉

I love your accent hehe. You know pretty much of music history by the way, wish some day meet you and talk all day, you can teach me russian, and I can teach you spanish ! Hahaha. Buen video, saludos !
Thank you! 😄😄
Great video! What’s the tuning though?
Thanx! Differs from piece to piece. I usually write the tuning I use in a particular piece in the description of every video
Oh that’s great thanks for your answer. No need to say this but you have amazing technique obviously. Really inspiring keep it up!!!
You are a remarkable talent. The sonorities just soar. It must be amazing to be in the room and hear it live. Would you ever consider going to 11?
Thank you! To 11?..

Damn, now I need a 10 string!

I knew i wasnt the only one thinking that guitar needs more than 6 strings

Classical djent breakdowns of course!
Прекрасно!!!
why 10 strings?, its because classical djents
I said jokingly to a guitar player friend 10 string? Cuz 6 ain't enough and 12 is to many😅😅😅 but I was just having fun.
Anything less than 8 strings feels like half an instrument now. But since i switched from 6 to 8 and 9 i lost much of my skill but my fun when up alot
No strings are for the mass. Six are for talented people. 10 are for extra-brain-talented: Marina.

2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and *an instrument of ten strings.*
3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
4 For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.
5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.
