this one has to be one of the best movies filmed in this 21st century first quarter, an absolute masterpiece in all sense and the magnum opus of a universal genius of filmmaking.

This is such a good movie. Every single shot is a work of art. All the family members have their own arc on life and the meaning of it. From Yang-Yang taking pictures to NJ thinking about his past life, everyone is given the time to develop their experience on life and their attitude towards it.
Like Mr Ota said "Why are we afraid of the first time? Every day in life is a first time. Every morning is new. We never live the same day twice. We're never afraid of getting up every morning. Why?"
The Characters feel so real and down to earth.
    Great Review btw.

This is a rare moment of synchronicity for me. I watched Yi Yi a couple days go for the fist time and I said the exact same thing about aliens. I click on this video randomly and I hear it said with the exact same phrasing I used lol
Only goes to show how universal the movie is.

That’s really cool that you had that same thought

this movie touched my soul. all of life is in it. reminds me of a great 19th century french novel. yang has incorporated something of flaubert's concision, 'le mot juste', into the syntax of cinema. it is very fine and delicate stuff. very good.

I just saw it in cinema last night but I only picked up the authenticity of the experience. But not quite know how to talk about it.

I had never heard of this movie but I’m most definitely going to watch it ASAP. I agree that Taipei is not a beautiful city but it’s full of charm!

In general I would agree that Taipei is not a beautiful city but I would amend it by saying it's got some areas of beauty. I once went on a date in Taipei with an architect, I told her that the colonial Japanese era and the modern first world parts of Taipei are gorgeous and interesting. The KMT era buildings though, which is the majority of the city, are ugly AF. She agreed. I really need to find my dvd of this movie and watch it again.

can you review 'The terrorizers', '恐怖份子' ? I recently saw it in mubi and I felt in love with the director's vision. I can't seem to find Yi Yi online though...
I wish you could do more reviews about the Taiwanese New Wave cinema, I really love all the background facts you give us, unknown to us outside Taiwan.
Keep the good work 😊 !
