I really love 侯孝賢 !He also portrays women in his movies in a very warm, colorful, strong and amazing take. His movie is not hard or difficult to see , you can only said because the mass market is used to Hollywood style of its structure of movie telling, but if you are movie buff that are used to French, Japanese and German movies , Taiwanese movie such as Director Hou is very accessible ~ the city of sadness is simply amazing I watched it when I was very young and was truly amazed by it ❤
We will check out "City of Sadness"! Haven't seen that one yet. I think you are right: if you are used to watching foreign films this type of movie is not difficult at all to watch but I do think these days most people don't have the attention span for something a little bit slower than normal media, which is why I brought it up. I think things like social media are actually more to blame than Hollywood films because whenever people get a little bit restless they reach for their phones. That's why I want to encourage everyone to watch more films like these, people need retraining in how to enjoy quiet, contemplative moments and Hou's films are excellent at that. Thanks for the comment!
This was one of the first VHS films I rented 20 years ago as a college student, totally uneducated about cinema and unaware of what it was and it has haunted me ever since. I still believe it’s the most beautiful film I’ve ever watched. To steal from a wonderful review I found online “This is hope strewn across the Taipei landscape with words and snow and coins and the colour blue”. I am so hoping for a 4k restoration sometime in the future.
A great film to watch as a college student, I love those viewing experiences that are so meaningful we wish we could go back to them and view them again for the first time
This is one of my favorite movies ever. I'm from Europe, but the story and period of this movie reminds me of my own experiences. Also the first shot is amazing!
I'm watching this from a little city in Mexico and I got really nostalgic about that movie as the guy says you have to learn to read images, I'd like millennium mambo, but your review it's a good help, so thank you New subscriber here
Great discussion. HHH is one of world cinema’s most important voices. Very happy to have come across your channel. Also was not expecting Taiwanese art film and Your Mom’s House Podcast to ever cross over but I’m not mad at it. Good Morning Julia, let’s go full trottle!
Just watched Millennium Mambo. The second film I've seen by this director. The first movie I saw was Assassin in the theaters in NYC. Both are slow as you say, but I agree that it is a style to bring out the subtleties of the performances.
Thoroughly enjoyed your take and insights. But I just want to say, semi-seriously but also semi tongue in cheek, that whether there is a plot or not, whether the male protagonist is believable or not, and so on, I simply don't care. Millenium Mambo is the perfect vehicle to immerse ones self in the sublime beauty and talent of Hsu Qi for 119 minutes. Anything else in the movie, and there is a lot, is simply a bonus. And what a visual masterpiece. Heck, I think I could happily watch just the 2 minute 24 second opening scene on loop for the whole 119 minutes. It magically transports you to a whole different state of consciousness.
This is a great movie because it creates counterpoints between states of enclousure and freedom through the use of spaces and Movement and slow motion sometimes. We can say Hou use a minimalistic style (in the spare use of editing and camera positions) that may resemble some times to Bresson or Antonioni , but different to them in that he uses actors that convey a lot of emotion through their style of acting. So
This is a fantastic point I never thought of and the contrast between the minimalism of the camera and the emotion might be what makes his films so special.
That's interesting, I've definitely heard people say both, personally I'm partial to Yang's films. For me YiYi is one of the greatest films of all time ruclips.net/video/Qjg5zSZjkCw/видео.html
I saw this at the San Francisco Film Festival in 2003 or so. It was a bit slow, but we liked it. A very terrible but realistic portrayal of a Taiwanese male, lol…

@@MintVolcano That is true, but growing older we can watch them again and again and go back to that time in our lives, and that is almost as good :)

Nice! Check out City of Sadness and Summer at Grandpas, they are some of his early works :) ruclips.net/video/FPp_kTAooJM/видео.html

I whole heartedly agree that the charisma of Hsu Qi is probably the main thing that elevates this movie to masterpiece status :)

Great recommend, it's on the list! Looking forward to watching some Taiwanese films!
This is a great film! And HHH is an important director to become familiar with :)
Great review guys. I think that the most important and well known taiwanese director is Edward Yang.
