I can relate to her. all that manic pixie impulsive drifting seems cute now, but with each year that I grow older, I seem to grow from charming to caricature
The genius of Hou Hsiao-hsien and Mark Lee Ping-bing: In the first 40 seconds, they make you fall in love with her. Of course it's Shu Qi, so they have an advantage. Yet for most of those 40 seconds her back is turned to us. We don't even know her name yet (Vicky). And still we fall. That one lingering look round is all we need. In the next 40 seconds, Hou builds an almost intolerable contrast between the youthful abandon & aliveness we see on screen, and the engulfing, parasitic relationship described in the voice over: the life force in full bloom vs the emotional prison house, a death-in-life. And then the shock: All this happened a decade ago, when the millennium was new, and everything possible. Was this late night stroll her last taste of freedom? Did the walls close in afterwards? Did she even survive? Or is she narrating from the beyond, in 3rd person? Or did she somehow finally escape, against all the odds? As she looks back once more, and then floats down the stairs--could we be any more invested in the answers to these questions? In what becomes (what became) of this young woman, fronting her destiny in the new era? This working class Isabel Archer, crossing a fluorescent-lit pedestrian bridge in late-night Taipei. And that is the opening two and a half minutes. It leaves you breathless.
She broke up with Hao Hao but he always tracked her down, called her, begged her to come back again and again. As if under a spell or hypnotized, she couldn't escape, she always came back. She told herself that she had NT$500K in the bank. When she'd used it up, she would leave him for good. This happened ten years ago, in the year 2001. The world was greeting the 21st century and celebrating the new millennium.
The time I watched this opening scene I thought it would become one of my favs, not really, the movie´s a little dull and misdirected, but from time to time in visual terms is astonishingly mesmerizing.
This movie was not misdirected just because it is not entertaining, it is director's style that he has developed over the long years. If you focus too much on visuals and vibe you ditch the message and observation which he chose to be more important. This film is absolutely on point.

Hypnotic is an understatement. Brilliant opening.
Shu Qi is unreasonably beautiful.

The song is absolutely beautiful and i love to see when she's walking
Fantastic Shu Qi, music, cinematography in this sequence. Reminded me somewhat of WKW's work. Hou Hsiao Hsien's A City of Sadness is excellent too.
