  • AVOID DISASTER!! Installing your weight distribution hitch the RIGHT way! Read your weight distribution hitch installation instructions! When we initially installed our weight distribution hitch we did not follow the directions. Initial weighs showed that it wasn't right. In this video we correct that installation, measure and re-weigh our truck and trailer to verify proper installation. This should make for a much improved towing experience as well as making everyone safer while we tow.

    Could you go into more detail about how you installed the bracket for the sway bar portion ?

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  2 года назад

      The only real involved part is the bracket that goes on the frame. Just loosen the sway bar and with the camper attached hook the sway bar up to your hitch. Then get it roughly halfway extended and attached to the frame bracket. Mark the hole location for the bracket and drill pilot holes. Then use the supplied self tapping screws and Tighten it down.

    You need to add another washer to your spacer on the head. The maximum links of chain hanging is 5, adding another washer tilts the head back resulting in lower bars and less links hanging. Your bars will be a little more parallel with your frame also.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 года назад +1

      I tried that setting as well and it resulted in the weights being way off from where they should and the overall feeling of the tow being wrong. I may try it again at some point and tweak a little but right now the settings I have are the best feel and weight distribution.

      @@AngellFamilyAdventures my front axle empty is 3505 lbs and with my trailer on its 3461 only removing 45 lbs from my front. My rear axle is 2469 lbs empty and 3152 with the trailer adding 683 lbs to my rear axle. My tongue weight is 815 lbs verified on the scale. The last 130 lbs is actually transferred back to the trailer axles. The trailer axles are 4940 lbs without the chains hooked up and 5070 lbs with the chains hooked up. Basically what I'm saying is that I think you have a lot of room for improvement. I actually ended up adding 2 washers to my hitch and 4 links hanging to get to this point, you'll have to play around like you said. But I wouldn't be happy until your front axle weight is less than 100 lbs different from unloaded.

      @@kevt9442 But as soon as you load the vehicle (and trailer) with hundreds of pounds of people/gear, much of it in the back - some of it behind the rear axle - doesn't that change all of these measurements? Like adding 200 lbs of bikes (plus a bike rack) over the hitch for one trip, then leaving it behind for another trip.

At the end of the video you said all together that you were over 12000lbs. Is that more then what your truck should be able to handle or how does the separate weight limits work?

    Did you weigh your truck with a fully topped off fuel tank? Fuel makes a big difference.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 года назад

      I weighed with a 1/4 tank but I did that on purpose. I wanted a base weight so I can weigh before each trip and know exactly how much we added. Fuel, people, dogs, other stuff, etc. Fuel is about 6lbs/gallon so I know about what fuel will add and I know about what the people will add. So I can take a swag at the amount of stuff I can add and then subtract my fuel and people weight to know how much I added.

      The goal when doing initial setup is to take it as close to back at normal ride height as possible. In theory it should then do the same when you're fully loaded. If you squat 2" without bars, but back up to 1/2" squat with bars, then I won't matter what your starting height is. But you do want to be careful not to go over your payload. That is a bigger concern to me in general. I watch mine closely.

    It is my understanding that adjusting the airbags after setting up the WDH, it negates some of its benefits. Safe towing.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 года назад +1

      I had heard that as well and I ran at first with no pressure in the bags. It felt ok but not 100%. I even adjusted the bars and everything with no air pressure. When I put 15-18 psi in the bags it feels much more steady. Less sway and bounce. Ultimately you've gotta run what feels right. If you're uncomfortable with how it feels then it's not right. I don't use the airbags as the primary support at all. Just that little bit of extra.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm 3 года назад +1

      Yes lifting the truck with bags relieves some tension off the bars the same way jacking the trailer up makes it easier to install and un-install the chains. However, just jacking it up an inch with the bags won't do much. You could always add a link for more tension and double check what you did with a tape measure or scales.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 года назад

      If I went up a link I'm fairly confident it would be far too much. I've actually contemplated running with one less link because the bars are already slightly off parallel. I just haven't had a chance to try it out without the family in the truck. I want to set it up and do a short local run to be sure it feels safe.

      @@AngellFamilyAdventures I find on mine that one up or down is noticeable in the way it feels and the weight you feel in the steering wheel. But it is never anything that feels dangerous. I know now that I leave 3 links loose if I do not have fresh water and 4 links loose with a full tank. Works like a charm. I have rear bags (factory air suspension) and adjustable shocks. So the truck levels itself and I put the shocks on firm and it is a great experience. My wife even offers to drive a lot. I even followed her once in my work car (she is not insured to drive it) and she drove it all the way to site. I asked he how it felt and she just said "perfectly fine".

      100% agree on the sockets. I've since purchased the proper socket for mine and keep it in my tool set in the RV with my battery powered impact. Makes adjustments so quick and easy. I also use that impact for the manual stabilizers and have used it for tire changes (all of those take a 19mm).

    With a tongue weight of, say, 800, shouldn't a properly setup WDH add 400 to each axle?

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  Год назад

      I am by no means an expert on this, but I don't believe it transfers the entire tongue weight, just a portion of it. So to your example, say you have 800 lb tongue weight, the WDH may only transfer 200 lbs. 100 to each axle. Reducing your tongue weight to 600 lbs. I'm just making up numbers for the example but you get what I'm saying. I'll have to do some research on this because you've really made me think and wonder of the exact weight reduction (or percentage) of these hitches.

    What brand air bag system do you have? Do you hitch up and all that before raising your air bags? Seems as that would throw your weights off? and when you scaled it did you add air before weighing?

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  2 года назад

      It's an Air Lift Load Lifter 5000 kit. I did not use any air when weighing and I do put 10-12 lbs of air in after hitching up but only for stability. It doesn't raise the truck at all.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 года назад

      I've played with the washers and tilt as well as the links in the chain. That position is as level as I can get the bars. Any more washers or move a link and they're angled down and the tongue weight is too high vs what it should be.

    I run with 5# in my airbags on my 2011 Dodge Ram ...how much air did you put in to level out?j....PS...I am a single gal and this is soooo helpful! Thank you for doing this!

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 года назад +1

      I am still playing around with air pressure to determine what feels right. At first I put about 25# in to get it "level" or back to pre-load height. That was too much and felt loose and not safe. Ultimately I determined that its less about height and more about feel. Last trip I ended at about 18# and it felt pretty good. We have an upcoming trip and I'll try starting at 20 and see how it acts. Will drop to 15 and see if it's better or worse. I think within the next trip or two I should be able to land on a good starting point. But remember, the right setting could change based on each trip and how much stuff you have in the bed/back of the vehicle and the rig itself.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 года назад +1

      You'll notice as well that the feeling of sway will change dramatically based on airbag psi as well. But it's also very dependent on consistent WDH setup. I went down one link in my chains and it changed everything. I quickly went back to my "6 links hanging" setting. But each truck/trailer is different.

    • @hankmcdavid722
      @hankmcdavid722 3 года назад +1

      I've fount the sweet spot for our inside the coil bags to be about 15 psi. I actually just use a bicycle pump to inflate them, as our storage area doesn't have nearby electricity. I've found putting the hook into the 4th link is best, but it's above parallel, ive been thinking I need to tilt the head back just a little bit more, and go to the 5th link.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 года назад

      I may try that myself because I'm on the 7th link which puts the bars slightly above parallel.

    • @telemark22
      @telemark22 3 года назад +1

      Another video makes a good case to add air to the bags before you set up the WDH. That makes sense to me and would be an error in this video. Otherwise, you are throwing off the WDH when you pressurize the airbags.

  • @Doug-gp2qw
    @Doug-gp2qw Месяц назад

    I bought that exact hitch when I bought my F150, based primarily on price. I would not buy another WDH that uses chains. It's very important to torque the bolts to 250 foot pounds. The little crescent wrenches will not do that. You need a larger impact gun, or a 2 foot breaker bar to get it that tight.
    When weighing your truck ideally you should have the gear and passengers in the truck that you will normally carry. That way you have more accurate weights on the axles. When you go to the CAT scale, weigh it with with the passengers in it, or other gear to approximate the weight. Then park the trailer in a parking spot, not blocking the scale or fuel lanes. Unhook and drop the trailer. Remove the bars but not the hitch. Go back to the scale and select reweigh. It will only cost $4 for the reweigh. Then you can figure how much weight the trailer is adding to your vehicle, and to which axle.
    When backing with that style of WDH, disconnect the anti-sway bar. Otherwise you might damage the hitch, truck, or trailer.

      Honestly both a great brands. I have never used a Reese WDH but have used many of their vehicle hitches with zero issues. I think the most important part is having the WDH and having it set up right. Also, I've heard a lot of people talk about their WDH creaking and popping when turning. So I think they're all noisy. But again, my only first person experience is with Husky.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 года назад

      Thanks. We always weigh fully loaded ahead of any trip. The initial weighs were only to ensure proper set up of the hitch. That allows us to see what the base weight and distribution is. Any other things added to the trailer can be shifted to allow proper distribution and the weight of passengers in the truck will add weight to the truck but won't impact the distribution of the trailer weight across the hitch.

      I have adjusted mine several times. Now I typically set it to where I can't move it back and forth by hand when unhooked, then go one more turn. It's pretty tight but controls the sway. Ultimately it's whatever feels right on your rig but that should be a good starting point.

      Good tip! My brake controller usually stays around 7. I've adjusted it up and down a little depending on how they feel but most of the time 7 seems good. I've heard that you test it by going 10mph ans squeezing the brakes. If it takes more than 10 seconds to stop the whole truck then you should adjust. • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  2 года назад

      I've heard of a couple people having this issue. I can't tell you what the manufacturer recommended solution is, but I can tell you that most I've seen have used some blocks under the tongue jack to get the camper tongue higher so they can get the chains in. I wouldn't drop the hitch lower, as it would throw off your measurements (assuming they're right). You shouldn't have to force it too much though. If you do, something is off and needs to be adjusted. If you've tried all of that and still no luck, I'd recommend calling Husky or whoever the manufacturer is.

    It's better to add suspension support system(like timbren) or upgrading to heavy-duty suspension to level out your truck and trailer than adding WDH. WDH may level out the sack and from bouncing but puts a lot of stress to your trailer frame and in time your(in general) frame will bend and or fold. This comment is for the general viewers.
