  • In this episode, the brothers discuss the rise of Christian philosophy in the second century among a group of writers known as “The Apologists.” While the Apostles were very successful in bringing both Jews, God fearers, and lower class pagans into the Christian movement, they were not able to significantly penetrate the philosophical classes of Greco Roman society. The Apologists of the second century, therefore, stepped in and framed the Christian faith in such a way that it became a serious interlocutor for the greatest philosophical minds of the day.

Ending with Justin's martyrdom, following in the footsteps of Socrates, is an inspiring way to end the episode. Rod Bennett points out that Justin himself appeals to the example of Socrates in his 2nd Apology, unintentionally prophesying the way he would die.

This was an amazing discussion on these holy men, who managed to see Christ as the ultimate fulfilment of the pusuit of knowledge.
I have 3 questions, which aren't too complex I hope:
    1. Did the apologists admit that Christians worship Christ? If they believed, within their frameworks, that Jesus was a logical emination of the enifible God (to horribly simplify), then did they admit to giving their worship to Him? Given the role of the Sacred Mysteries of the faith, this question of whether they did to me is not as interesting as whether they admited it in their works.
    2. You have previously commented that Christians took our language on the Sacraments from the Gnostics (I believe Valentinius). Do you see this taking of language and idea as a similar phenominon as greek philosphy and these men in the video above?
    3. Since you mentioned S Ireneus and Tertulian, are you planing on saving a discussion on the development of the NT canon to a video on the later apologists? I ask this because the Marcion video seems to hint that you guys hold to Marcionite Priority, which is not a position I thought a Catholic would hold. It is also a facinating tangent which I hope y'all delve into (the development of the NT as a whole).

Okay I just started but FYI each of your audios only comes through one channel. Dan's is on the right and Steven's is on the left. With headphones it's pretty jarring and distracting.

Doubly difficult for me using hearing aids in ears that vary widely in debility-left ear is so bad it sounds like the adults in a Charlie Brown cartoon. Not your fault, but unlistenable for me as is…

@@allthewhile hey guys, we apologize for some of the audio mishaps. I believe my mic cable is going out, and it messed up the audio.
But, just a FYI: we don’t receive any monetary support for this channel, nor have we asked for it. We pay out of pocket for all of the necessary books, articles, cameras (which is currently our phones), editing software, streaming software, and audio equipment. We have no producers, and we both have full time day jobs. Everything from A to Z is free to the end user.
If you’d like to support this channel to improve the visual or audio quality, consider sending a “super thanks,” as that would help us invest more in the channel and improve the quality for everyone.

@@TheCatholicBrothersmy comment was not meant as a complaint but just an FYI. I'm fancy and got AirPods for Christmas so was listening as I did work around the house and noticed the audio was weird so I thought I would let you know so you could fix it for the future in case you weren't aware.
