- What’s happening in this Waterworld movie clip?
The Mariner (Kevin Costner - who also starred in Yellowstone and Dancing with Wolves) dives to the bottom of the ocean carrying Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn - who also starred in Basic Instinct) inside a bubble of air. When they reach the bottom we can see the carcasses of the cities that used to be there, and the sand at the bottom of the ocean. Helen can’t believe her eyes and thought that this did not exist. When they reach the surface, they notice that pirates have attacked their boat and they can’t escape.

What’s the Waterworld movie about?
While the polar cap has completely melted and sea level has risen to the point of covering the Earth, 'The Mariner' (Kevin Costner - who also starred in Yellowstone and Dancing with Wolves) sails the seas in his trimaran. During his journey, after being captured, he meets a woman, Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn - who also starred in Basic Instinct) and his adopted young daughter Enola (Tina Majorino - who also starred in Napoleon Dynamite), seeking to reach Dryland, the only land still emerging. They offer to release him in exchange for the trip. He accepts and takes them with him, but they will be pursued and will have many obstacles to overcome in their path...

at least now it'll still go down in history as the most expensive movie ever made.
It's because the theatrical cut sucks and many people still aren't aware that other, superior versions exist. For anyone who's interested, look up the "Ulysses cut", which is an extended version that makes it a pretty decent adventure film. Great soundtrack, too.

There is nothing for them to take notes over it. This is fiction, totally unscientific! The Titan's accident was just a malpractice of safety checks - all materials have limits on endurance due to 'fatigue'.

OMG! what a creepy scene which gives shivers in the mind and body! masterpiece scene.
I love this movie. Even though it depicts water level rising more than 300m (judging by the gage, but from the descent it looks like more than a kilometer, either of this is hilarious, there's simply not enough ice to achieve that).
As I recall, in the comics that came out later, this moment is explained by the fall of some kind of comet from outer space.
I think if the pole ice caps fully melted, the sea level wouldn’t even rise by 300 feet, let alone 300 meters. No mountain would be underwater.
Waterworld was the Aquaman back then.. only, he never talked to prawns and crabs..

That's basically what I do for most films
I'm guessing that submarine was one of the many remains that showed near the end when the water was rising, wars broke out everywhere in a last ditch effort to take as much land as possible.
It probably ran out of Power and the crew had nowhere to go. Not the best way to Go in my opinion

As many know the shark fins going under the boat are all that’s left of an unrealistic CGI shark-fight scene that was deleted when test audiences burst out laughing.

Great movie
I think one mistake this movie made was to immediately tell us the fate of Earth instead of keeping us in the dark as to what kind of world this is. This could've been a pretty solid punch if done that way. Still it's an awesome movie, probably the most underrated "flop" of all time.

What the earth will look like 200 or 300 years after the complete melting of the polar ice caps north and south. Which of course nature has never done as everything on this world was underwater before there was even land to walk on. So seriously this will....never.....happen....in...real.....life. Spooky good tour of the ruins of manhattan though.

Really? Scientists say we’ve had at least 6 ice ages. Don’t you think if you have ice ages you’d have the opposite too? Where the temperature increases also? Common sense dictates that! Climate change is just a scare tactic. Ever heard of droughts? I’ve seen photos from over 150 years ago of a lake with an island that I grew up on. The waters 8 foot deep between the shore and island. The picture you could walk to the island and your feet wouldn’t even get wet! So no, I don’t believe in the climate change crap we’re feed. The earth goes through cycles cold to hot, back and forth. Wake up!

The smokers encounter was right after where the three encountered first smoker trap then saioed about ten miles away before going underwater to see Denver Colorado then came.back up got trapped by the smokers that time!
He should've just kept on sailing away further amd wouldn't got thwarted by smokers eh!
But at the same time they could get captured anywhere later on eh!
My question is, where did the air for her breathe come from. That little bubble could not hold the amount of air.

4:09 "no way and no how" seems to be the same as one of the lines from sister sledge's song "lost in music".
This scene always bothered me. To go to that kind of depth one would need a much more serious diving bell and a helium air mixture.
The whole movie should bother you, cause there is now way a ski resort would ever get underwater (except maybe that indoor ski mall in Dubai): even if the whole ice of the poles melted, sea level wouldn’t increase by more than 300 feet. Mountains would still be well above water.
This production depicts how global warming will raise sea levels? Whilst this seems like an overestimation and dramatization of worst case scenarios, humans should take seriously such warnings about climate change, global warming and the very REAL sea level rising that is currently occurring and will worsen as the years continue.
Though scientists say that if all the ice melts the seas would rise about 23 feet or so you must also take into account how warmer water expands which would make that rising more significant. Also take into account the increased volume of precipitation and stronger storms that will occur which will dump more water from the atmosphere onto the land that isn't drowned by the sea level rise which will cause more extreme flooding events. All in all, the rising water is a very serious issue and existential threat. Something practical must be done to reduce it to save habitable land space for humans especially with the reality of the overpopulation issue which will demand more land usage for human habitation and agriculture/food production.

How can this bubble resist the pressure?
This film is known for being quite silly in terms of its scientific accuracy, particularly regarding the cause of the apocalypse (it would require a significantly larger amount of water than what is currently held in the ice caps to completely flood the planet). However, this shouldn't be a concern. Simply suspend your disbelief and savor the entertainment.
At 30’ depth and 2 atmospheres, the air bubble would collapse.
Not necessarily ... If it were open at the bottom like a diving bell, then the inside pressure would equalize automatically - and the lady would get decompression sickness/the bends on their way up ...
Either way, it doesn't work but we are not watching a scientific documentary here.
